Temporohyoid osteoarthropathy (THO) is characterized by progressive osseous proliferation of the stylohyoid and petrous temporal bones. Generally, diagnosis is confirmed by guttural pouch endoscopy and skull radiography. In the present case, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed in a 6-month-old Thoroughbred foal showing signs of head tilt and unilateral ear droop, consistent with the presence of a vestibular disease and unilateral facial paralysis. CT revealed bony fusion and proliferation of the right temporohyoid joint, while MRI revealed that otitis media was responsible for THO. In conclusion, this report suggests that CT and MRI provide a more concrete diagnosis and better understandings of the mechanism of THO...

THE ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF BREASTFEEDING: A REVIEW AND ANALYSIS AgEcon
Weimer, Jon P..
A minimum of $3.6 billion would be saved if breastfeeding were increased from current levels (64 percent in-hospital, 29 percent at 6 months) to those recommended by the U.S. Surgeon General (75 and 50 percent). This figure is likely an underestimation of the total savings because it represents cost savings from the treatment of only three childhood illnesses: otitis media, gastroenteritis, and necrotizing enterocolitis. This report reviews breastfeeding trends and previous studies that assessed the economic benefits of breastfeeding.

Etiology of canine otitis media and antimicrobial susceptibility of coagulase-positive Staphylococci in Fortaleza city, Brazil BJM
Oliveira,Lis Christina de; Leite,Carlos Artur Lopes; Brilhante,Raimunda Sâmia N.; Carvalho,Cibele Barreto M..
This study evaluated the middle ear microbiota and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns from strains isolated from dogs with otitis media. A total of 62 dogs obtained from Zoonoses Control Center of Fortaleza City Ceará State / Brazil were studied over a 10-month period (August/2003 to June/2004). Of the total, 46.8% (n=30) of the animals were positive for otitis media and the infection was monomicrobial in 76.6% of them. The most frequent isolated agents were coagulase-positive Staphylococci (CPS-55%) and Pseudomonas sp (10%). For S. intermedius (n=13) and S. aureus subsp aureus (n=9), respectively, the greater resistance rates were observed using penicillin G (30.76% and 44.44%), ampicillin (7.69% and 44.44%), erythromycin (23.07% and 44.44%),...
