The Impact of Situation and Outlook Information in Corn and Soybean Futures Markets: Evidence from WASDE Reports AgEcon
Isengildina-Massa, Olga; Irwin, Scott H.; Good, Darrel L.; Gomez, Jennifer K..
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of situation and outlook information from World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) in corn and soybean futures markets over the period 1985 to 2006. Results indicate that WASDE reports containing National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) crop production estimates and other domestic and international situation and outlook information have the largest impact; causing return variance on report sessions to be 7.38 times greater than normal return variance in corn futures and 6.87 times greater than normal return variance in soybean futures. WASDE reports limited to international situation information and domestic and international outlook information have a smaller impact. The results show...

AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS RESEARCH AND EXTENSION MARKETING PROGRAMS: HOW WELL ARE THEY INTEGRATED? AgEcon
Brorsen, B. Wade; Anderson, Kim B..
Extension marketing economists were surveyed to determine whether they are using available research results and whether research is being conducted on topics relevant to extension marketing economists. In some cases, the beliefs of extension marketing economists differ from recent research results. The research topics recommended by extension economists and the topics of papers presented at the 1994-97 annual NCR-134 Conference on Applied Commodity Price Analysis, Forecasting, and Market Risk Management are well matched. While relevant research is being done, many extension economists desire marketing strategies that both reduce risk and increase income. Research, however, has not produced such strategies.

Medium Term Outlook for Canadian Agriculture International and Domestic Markets AgEcon
Charlebois, Pierre; Gagne, Stephan; Gendron, Carole.
The purpose of this document is to describe the features of the MTO covering the period 2010 to 2020. The MTO is a plausible future for the international and domestic agri-food sectors based on current policies in Canada and other countries as of Fall 2010. It serves as a benchmark for discussion and scenario analysis. The outlook makes specific assumptions and outlines their implications. Since it assumes that policies remain unchanged from existing legislation, the outlook is not a forecast of future events. In particular there are no assumptions made regarding the outcome of the Doha round of trade negotiations. It also assumes no impact from climate change and from policy to mitigate climate change nor significant animal disease outbreaks or unusual...

Medium Term Outlook for Canadian Agriculture - International and Domestic Markets AgEcon
Charlebois, Pierre; Gagne, Stephan.
The purpose of this document is to describe the features of the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Medium Term Outlook for Canadian Agriculture (previously entitled Medium Term Policy Baseline) covering the period 2008 to 2018. The outlook is an attempt to outline a plausible future of the international and domestic agri-food sectors. It serves as a benchmark for discussion and scenario analysis. The outlook makes specific assumptions and outlines their implications. Since it assumes that policies remain unchanged from existing legislation, the outlook is not a forecast of future events. The medium term assumptions used and published by the OECD/FAO in the Agricultural Outlook are by in large maintained in the AAFC's outlook but updated to reflect...

Perspectives d’évolution des marches céréaliers pour la campagne de commercialisation 2005/06 AgEcon
Diarra, Salifou Bakary; Dembele, Niama Nango.
The 2005 – 2006 marketing campaign was difficult because of the drought that occurred in all countries in the region. As a result, the price of sorghum, millet, maize and rice soared. State actions to improve cereals supply through tax-exempt rice imports did not achieve the expected outcomes. Rice has been the main contributing factor to the rise of cereals price. The low levels of stocks of rice in the world and the supply in fertilizers below expectations along with a decrease in productivity have contributed to the rise of rice prices at the national level.

Outlook vs. Futures: Three Decades of Evidence in Hog and Cattle Markets AgEcon
Colino, Evelyn V.; Irwin, Scott H..
The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the accuracy of outlook forecasts relative to futures prices in hog and cattle markets. Published forecasts from four prominent livestock outlook programs are available for analysis. Most of the series begin in the mid- to late-1970s and end in 2006. Root mean squared error (RMSE) comparisons indicate, with one exception, no meaningful differences in forecast accuracy between outlook forecasts and futures prices. The null hypothesis that futures prices encompass outlook forecasts is rejected in 9 of 11 cases for hogs and 7 of 8 cases for cattle, clearly indicating that outlook forecasts provide incremental information not contained in futures prices. The magnitude of decline in RMSE from...

Do Composite Procedures Really Improve the Accuracy of Outlook Forecasts? AgEcon
Colino, Evelyn V.; Irwin, Scott H.; Garcia, Philip.
This paper investigates whether the accuracy of outlook hog price forecasts can be improved using composite forecasts in an out-of-sample context. Price forecasts from four wellrecognized outlook programs are combined with futures-based forecasts, ARIMA, and unrestricted Vector Autoregressive (VAR) models. Quarterly data are available from 1975.I through 2007.IV, which allow for a relatively long out-of-sample evaluation period after permitting model specification and appropriate composite-weight training periods. Results show that futures and numerous composite procedures outperform outlook forecasts. At intermediate horizons, OLS composite procedures perform rather well. The superiority of futures and composite forecasts decreases at longer horizons...
