Historical framework to explain long-term coupled human and natural system feedbacks: application to a multiple-ownership forest landscape in the northern Great Lakes region, USA Ecology and Society

Current and future human and forest landscape conditions are influenced by the cumulative, unfolding history of social-ecological interactions. Examining past system responses, especially unintended consequences, can reveal valuable insights that promote learning and adaptation in forest policy and management. Temporal couplings are complex, however; they can be difficult to trace, characterize, and explain. We develop a framework that integrates environmental history into analysis of coupled human and natural systems (CHANS). Our study demonstrates how historical data and methods can help to explain temporal complexity of long-term CHANS feedbacks. We focus on two sources of temporal complexity: legacy effects and lagged interactions. We apply our...

Strategic models, ownership and organisational changes in the Hungarian food industry AgEcon
Kapronczai, Istvan.
Based on statistical analyses of the financial data, the study showed that organisational instability characterised the period under examination. On average, change of ownership or of management, or even mergers or de-mergers occurred every 3.7 years. The “stable” periods are too short for implementing corporate activities based on an elaborated strategy, granting success both in the medium and long term. We have established the strategic models by which the enterprises could be ranked following the change of ownership or management. From among the four types, the asset depleting and the surviving strategies are definitely disadvantageous, but they accounted for more than 56% of the cases. The frequency of occurrence of the negative strategic models...

SURVIVAL AND OWNERSHIP OF INTERNET MARKETPLACES FOR AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Wheatley, W. Parker.
This research develops a theory of how market structure and belief formation drive survival and ownership of marketplaces. This paper explains the process for deriving theoretical predictions about these phenomena and suggests how comparison of theoretical predictions with actual outcomes in the context of agricultural Internet marketplaces provides an empirical test. By providing a sound understanding of the driving forces behind Internet marketplace ownership, a factual basis is introduced relative to concerns about concentration of the ownership of Internet marketplaces in the hands of buyers or sellers in agricultural markets.

Ownership and Investment Behaviour in Transition Countries: A Case Study of Collective and Corporate Farms in the Czech Republic AgEcon
Curtiss, Jarmila; Ratinger, Tomas; Medonos, Tomas.
Cooperative and corporate farms have retained an important role for agricultural production in many transition countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Despite this importance, these farms' ownership structure, and particularly the ownership's effect on their investment activity, which is vital for efficient restructuring and the sector's future development, are still not well understood. This paper explores the ownership-investment relationship using data on Czech farms from 1997 to 2008. We allow for ownership-specific variability in farm investment behaviour analyzed by utilizing an errorcorrection accelerator model. Empirical results suggest significant differences in the level of investment activity, responsiveness to market signals, investment...

Function and Significance of Reparcelling in Czech Republic AgEcon
Bartuskova, Jirina; Homolka, Jaroslav; Skubna, Ondrej.
The law No. 139/2002 Col., on reparcelling and land offices can be consider as one of the most important tools of active land law in the CR. In frame of administrative procedure in public interest, the law enables to re-parcel lands and ownership relations to them in order to create conditions for consequential management. A property right to newly defined parcels is acquired by a decision of the appropriate land office which is an administrative authority. By means of reparcelling, also „modern“ ecological problems are solved. Reparcelling is necessary for renewal of statutory land registration, clearing and delimitation of borders in the landscape, and so it is a significant contribution for renewal of peace in land ownership in the CR shaken in 1948 –...

The Changing Nature of Dairying: Ownership, Management And Succession AgEcon
Dooley, A.E..
DairyNZ funded a two-year study on dairy farm ownership and management structures (June 2005 to May 2007), followed by a study on dairy farm succession in 2007/08. Farm business structures affect wealth creation and distribution, and determine who the dairy industry participants are and will be, and the roles they will have. Succession determines the next generation of farm owners. The research included literature reviews, farmer focus groups, a survey, case studies and industry interviews. This paper will present an overview of the key issues identified and discuss what these might mean for the future.

Less Discussed Dynamics in the Czech Farm Structure Development AgEcon
Curtiss, Jarmila; Ratinger, Tomas; Medonos, Tomas.
The paper provides an empirical study of the dynamics of ownership changes in Czech agricultural companies, which are assigned by unique heterogeneity in ownership forms. Since employee ownership has retained a relatively important place in these structures, neoclassical, as well as institutional theories of labour managed firms are considered. Building upon efficiency arguments, both approaches suggest the dissolution of labour managed firms. The empirical analysis utilized detailed survey data from 2004 and accountancy data from 1997 to 2003. We used cluster analysis to classify companies into homogeneous groups with respect to their ownership structure and stage of restructuring, and analysed these characteristics in relation to performance indicators....

If We Want Entrepreneurs We Need to Provide the Right Environment AgEcon
van Blokland, P.J..
This paper takes the notion that entrepreneurs are good for economies and outlines what countries can do to encourage entrepreneurship. It suggests that citizen rights and freedom are directly related with entrepreneurial activity. Illegal entrepreneurial activity is mentioned as an outlet in repressive localities. It lists areas of the world where freedom exists and where it does not. Historical, current and country examples are given to illustrate these suppositions and the paper concludes with the role of entrepreneurship in world agribusiness.

สิทธิเกษตรกร: ผลกระทบจากร่างแก้ไขกฎหมายคุ้มครองพันธุ์พืช Thai Agricultural
Somchai Ratanachueskul.
Agriculture has been one of the most important occupations in the Thai society from the past to the present. A considerable number of plant varieties in Thailand are partly derived from the farmers’ path of life and their customs—they exchange seeds and knowledge relating to such varieties. However, under unavoidable international trade and free market paradigm, agriculture businesses led by multinational corporations encourage and support modern agriculture by convincing farmers to cultivate for export using high yield varieties, and limiting farmers’ choice to grow crops. Under these circumstances, the principle factors of farmers’ cultivation, seeds and plant varieties among others, are transformed into private property and protected by an intellectual...
