The French project "Morest", coordinated by IFREMER, aims to understand the causes of the summer mortalities in Crassostrea gigas. In 2001, three sets of families were bred following a nested half-sib mating design. 17 half-sib families (HSF) were obtained in this first generation (G1) and reared in 3 sites. Significant differences in survival were observed among HSF, and some HSF showed high levels of mortality in all sites, clearly indicating a genetic basis for survival. In 2002, a second generation (G2), including divergent selection and inbred lines, was constituted. Monitoring of survival and growth of G2s were the same as in 2001. Significant differences in survival were found between the offspring of the "high" and "low" selected groups and between... |

Of the several bacterial diseases which may result from consumption of shellfish, those caused by marine bacteria of the genus Vibrio are the most abundant. In the United States, up to 10,000 non-fatal cases per year are estimated to be caused by the various members of this genus. More than 95% of all deaths in the United States which result from seafood consumption are caused by a single bacterium, Vibrio vulnificus. The bacterium is a normal inhabitant of estuarine waters, and occurs naturally in especially high numbers in molluscan shellfish. Infections following consuption of raw or undercooked shellfish, especially oysters, result in fatality rates of over 60%. Because most oysters in the United States are transported large distances before marketing,... |

Polyphasic analysis of four new Vibrio isolates originating from the haemolymph of diseased cultured oysters is described. The new isolates were closely related to Vibrio splendidus, having 98 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. Phylogenetic analysis based on DNA gyrase subunit B (gyrB), RNA polymerase Quo factor (rpoD), replication origin-binding protein (rctB) and transmembrane regulatory protein (toxR) genes, fluorescent amplified fragment length polymorphism and DNA-DNA hybridization experiments clearly showed that the new isolates form a tight genomic group that is different from the currently known Vibrio species. It is proposed that these new isolates should be accommodated in a novel species, Vibrio gigantis sp. nov. Phenotypic features that... |

Microalgal population of oyster ponds is dominated by several tychobenthic diatoms which provide a very good food to grow oysters. The mechanisms which allow them to dominate have been put under research. H.P.L.C. analysis demonstrated 17 amino acids amounted 10-17% of total DON, i.e. 0.6-11.5 mu g-at/l nitrogen. Serin and glycin were the most abundant. None of the substances was related to the presence of oyster. Glutamic acid, alanin and ornithin concentrations showed the greatest variations; they are suspected to play the major role as nutrient source. Screening of nutritional capabilities of ten local isolates of micro-algae to use 42 organic substances as sole source of nitrogen, demonstrated urea, glutamic acid and hypoxanthin are assimilated by all... |

The spat production in the Bay of Arcachon has been recently disturbed. Bioassays using algae used as food for oyster larvae have shown that the organotin paints affect or inhibit growth of Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans . Fresh waters coming into the bay and shore sediment did not affect the growth of these algae. Bioassays proposed by Woelke (1967) using embryos and larvae of Crassostrea gigas have shown that the quality of the sea water from Arcachon harbour has been improved a few months after the use of organotin paints has been prohibited. Likewise fresh waters are free from any micropollutants that could drastically disturb the reproduction of C. gigas in the bay. |

1. Introduction: network organisation in 1997. The REMORA network - REseau MOIIusques du département Ressources Aquacoles de l'Ifremer - (Ifremer's Aquaculture Resources Department Mollusc Network) has been evaluating, since 1993, hollow oysters' growth (Crassostrea gigas) in major French oyster beds. In order to do so, it has followed up on a yearly basis the growth of a unique oyster batch shared among different stations in the main French raising areas. Releasing takes place in February and picking happens in November or December; intermediary sampling is done in June and September. All operations happen on the same dates for all stations. A national report is published each year. 'Regional' stations are sometimes added to the national network, but they... |

This report has been achieved during a work as short-term consultant in Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (University of Maryland) in the Laboratory of Prof. B. J. Rothschild, for a period from July 7 to August 7 1989 and at Ifremer Laboratory of La Tremblade. The terms of reference of the consultance were : to compare the oyster fishery researches between the Chesapeake Bay and Europe, particularly in reference to the French coast. To evaluate the on-going Chesapeake Bay oyster stock assessment project and to provide its comments and recommendations. To work on spat settlement in the Bay. This study was funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources under contract F 1666-89-008 and by the... |

This study was based on in situ experiments conducted in a shellfish lagoon (Thau, France) to determine the interactions between suspended oyster Crassostrea gigas Thunberg cultures and their environment at a seasonal scale. Three groups of descriptors were considered simultaneously during the course of the study: the taxonomic composition of an oyster culture unit (OCU), the nutrient and oxygen exchanges at the OCU-water interface (fluxes) and the water-column characteristics (water). We used a multiple factorial analysis (MFA) to assess in a single reference frame: (1) the seasonal organisation of the taxonomic groups which compose the OCU and (2) the interactions between this multispecific assemblage and the water column. We found strong seasonal... |

The impact of suspended oyster culture (Crassostrea gigas, Thunberg) on oxygen and nutrient fluxes has been studied in situ, in a coastal lagoon (Thau, France), during a seasonal cycle. On the first plan of the multiple factorial correspondences analysis (MCA), seasons were well discriminated. The fluxes were maximum in summer and minimum in winter. However, this seasonal pattern was not only linked to the water temperature, as autumn and spring (similar temperatures of about 12 degrees C) were distinct in the second factorial plan (2.3). Oxygen uptake by the oyster cultures varied between 0 mu mol m(-2) h(-1) (January) and 11 823 +/- 377 mu mol m(-2) h(-1) (July). Ammonia and nitrate-nitrites were released into the water column respectively at a rate of... |
