Bromeliad seedlings are rarely found on sandy coastal plains (restinga), limited, probably, by stressful conditions and/or specific abiotic requirements for germination. The effect of water stress on rate, time, synchronicity and spreading of germination was evaluated here for three terrestrial bromeliads from the restinga of Maricá using osmotic solutions of polyethyleneglicol 6000 (PEG 6000), from 0.0 to -0.26 MPa for 30 days. Water stress induced by PEG lowered rate and increased time and synchronicity values, besides the number of daily events of bromeliad seed germination, under water potentials between 0.00 to -0.14 MPa. No seeds germinated under water potentials lower than -0.14 MPa. These results reinforce a constant and/or high moisture... |

ABSTRACT Seed germination of species that develop in arid and semi-arid soils can be altered by water deficit and abundance of salts in the soil. Knowledge on tolerance limits is fundamental to understand the adaptive capacity of species under such conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological changes (germination and vigor) of Mimosa caesalpiniifolia seeds from different regions and submitted to water and saline stresses. To simulate water stress, the osmotic agent polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) was adjusted to the potentials of 0, -0.2, -0.4, -0.6 and -0.8 MPa, whereas for the saline stress, NaCl solutions were adjusted to the potentials of 0, -0.1, -0.3, -0.5, -0.7; -0.9 and -1.1 MPa. The experimental design was completely... |

Kohleria eriantha (Benth.) |

The potential capacity of plant roots to absorb water and nutrients generally declines in osmotic-stressed plants, presumably because of a reduction in the nutrient element demand, and such decrease varies among plant genotypes. In order to investigate the effect of the osmotic stress caused by polyethylene-glycol 6000 (PEG) on the macronutrient concentration in sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) in vitro, we established a factorial experiment with a completely randomized distribution. Study factors were variety (Mex 69-290 and CP 72-2086) and PEG in the nutrient medium (0, 3, 6 and 9 %, to generate osmotic potential corresponding to -0.18, -0.45, -0.65 and -0.80 MPa, respectively), which resulted in eight treatments, with five replicates each. The experimental... |

The loss of benefits after re-drying is one of the drawbacks of the seed priming technique. Different types of stresses have been used before re-drying to preserve the priming benefits. This process may be seen as promoting cross tolerance to increase the defense mechanisms that prevent loss of viability in seeds primed after drying. We tested the effect of some stresses to induce cross-tolerance and different drying conditions with the aim of maintaining priming benefits in melon seeds. The seeds were primed in an aerated KNO3 solution (0.35M), -1.7MPa, 25 °C, in the dark for six days. The primed seeds were then submitted to slow drying, fast drying, cold shock + slow drying, cold shock + fast drying, heat shock + slow drying, heat shock + fast drying,... |
