Fisheries can be characterized as a network of interactions between natural and social systems, and thus should be viewed as complex, dynamic systems. Due to the multiplicity of components and processes, the involvement of various disciplines is required to understand the inter-relationships within and between the systems, and more so to adequately address management issues that typically affect several elements in the systems. To be successful, multidisciplinary approaches require mutual understanding of the perspectives, concepts, vocabulary and methods held by various disciplines, and agreement on the objects to be studied in common. In that spirit, at framework is suggested whereby fisheries systems are decomposed into related sub-systems that can be... |

Two algal communities on unconsolidated sand, dominated by two Caulerpa populations, were studied in the southwestern New Caledonian lagoon. Biomass, growth rates and production were measured at two stations over one year. Biomass and growth rate of Halimeda were estimated monthly by counting the number of new and lost segments on tagged plants and by weighing them. Production was assessed monthly by comparing two successive measurements. The average rates measured were 0.60 s f-1 d-1 (segment frond-1 day-1 ) for Halimeda incrassata and 0. 15 s f-1 d-1 for H. discoidea. Production in terms of organic carbon amounted to 3.79 g m-2 y-1 for H. incrassata and 3.37 g m-2 y-1 for H. discoidea. The production of H. discoidea population is subject to seasonal... |

Sediment trap experiments were conducted to assess the production, disintegration and downward flux of zooplankton fecal pellets in the upper 500 m water column of the anticyclonic gyre off Shikoku, Japan. The particulate organic carbon (POC) flux decreased from 53.7 mgC M-2 d-1 at 50 m to 23.7 MgC M-2 d-1 at 500 m. The POC flux at the bottom of the euphotic layer (100 m) was 37.9 mgC m-2 d-1, which was equivalent to about 5 % of the daily primary production in the gyre. The estimated pellet carbon flux accounted for 0.4-1.7 % of the total POC flux. The pellet flux rapidly decreased in the upper 150 m layer, in parallel with the decrease in zooplankton abundance. A mid-depth peak of pellet flux, not associated with a noticeable population of zooplankton,... |
