Coring induced sediment fabrics at IODP Expedition 347 Sites M0061 and M0062 identified by anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS): criteria for accepting palaeomagnetic data ArchiMer
Snowball, I; Almqvist, B; Lougheed, B C; Wiers, S; Obrochta, S; Herrero-bervera, E.
Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility data obtained from discrete sub-samples recovered from two Integrated Ocean Drilling Program sites (Expedition 347 sites M0061 and M0062 in the Baltic Sea) by an Advanced Piston Corer are compared to results obtained on sub-samples recovered by replicate 6 m long Kullenberg piston cores. Characteristic natural remanence directions were obtained from the total of 1097 sub-samples using principal component analyses. The three principal anisotropy axes of sub-samples taken from Advanced Piston Core liners align to the sub-sample axes, with the maximum axis (K1) parallel to the split core surfaces, possibly caused by outwards relaxation of the core-liners after splitting. A second anomalous anisotropy fabric is...

High-resolution palaeomagnetic record from Sea of Marmara sediments for the last 70 ka ArchiMer
Makaroğlu, Özlem; Nowaczyk, Norbert R; Eriş, Kadir K; Çağatay, M Namık.
Magnetostratigraphic and geochemical analyses were performed on two sediment cores recovered from the Sea of Marmara to investigate geomagnetic field variations over the last 70 ka. A chronology for each of the two cores was developed from eight AMS 14C datings, tephrochronology, and tuning of Ca concentrations with stadials and interstadials observed in Greenland ice core oxygen isotope data. Based on the age models, cores MD01–2430 and MRS-CS19 reach back to 70 ka and 32 ka, respectively. High average sedimentation rates of 43 cm/kyr for core MD01–2430 and 68 cm/kyr for core MRS-CS19 allow high-resolution reconstruction of geomagnetic field variations for the Sea of Marmara. Mineral magnetic properties are sensitive to glacioeustatic sea-level changes...

Dynamic Time Warping of Paleomagnetic Secular Variation Data ArchiMer
Hagen, Cedric J; Reilly, Brendan T; Stoner, Joseph S; Creveling, Jessica R.
We present and make publicly available a dynamic programming algorithm to simultaneously align the inclination and declination vector directions of sedimentary paleomagnetic secular variation data. This algorithmgenerates a library of possible alignments through the systematic variation of assumptions about the relative accumulation rate and shared temporal overlap of two or more time-series. The paleomagnetist can then evaluate this library of reproducible and objective alignments using available geologic constraints, statistical methods, and expert knowledge. We apply the algorithm to align previously (visually) correlated medium to high accumulation rate northern North Atlantic Holocene deposits (101– 102 cm/ka) with strong radiocarbon control. The...

Direct terrestrial-marine correlation demonstrates surprisingly late onset of the last interglacial in central Europe ArchiMer
Sier, Mark J.; Roebroeks, Wil; Bakels, Corrie C.; Dekkers, Mark J.; Bruehl, Enrico; De Loecker, Dimitri; Gaudzinski-windheuser, Sabine; Hesse, Norbert; Jagich, Adam; Kindler, Lutz; Kuijper, Wim J.; Laurat, Thomas; Muecher, Herman J.; Penkman, Kirsty E. H.; Richter, Daniel; Van Hinsbergen, Douwe J. J..
An interdisciplinary study of a small sedimentary basin at Neumark Nord 2 (NN2), Germany, has yielded a high-resolution record of the palaeomagnetic Blake Event, which we are able to place at the early part of the last interglacial pollen sequence documented from the same section. We use this data to calculate the duration of this stratigraphically important event at 3400 +/- 350 yr. More importantly, the Neumark Nord 2 data enables precise terrestrial marine correlation for the Eemian stage in central Europe. This shows a remarkably large time lag of ca. 5000 yr between the MIS 5e 'peak' in the marine record and the start of the last interglacial in this region.

Geological sampling in deep water: A new instrument is necessary. ArchiMer
Girardeau, J; Auzende, Jean-marie; Boillot, G.
The Nautile submersible is used to observe the underwater geological structures and to conduct geological sampling in deep water. But it is not sufficient because it is not possible to measure the faults in the oceanic rifts.

Palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic analysis of Holocene deposits from the Adriatic Sea: detecting and dating short-term fluctuations in sediment supply ArchiMer
Vigliotti, L; Verosub, K; Cattaneo, Antonio; Trincardi, F; Asioli, A; Piva, A.
We present palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic results from five cores collected in the basin of the Adriatic Sea. Four cores (PRAD2-4; KS02-246; CSS00-23 and CSS00-07) were collected along a shore-parallel transect whereas the fifth core (AMC99-01) was retrieved in the central Adriatic in 250 m water depth, on the floor of the Meso-Adriatic Depression. After alternating field demagnetization, the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) directions show a characteristic and primary magnetization of the sediments that is representative of secular variation of the geomagnetic field. By combining C-14 dating and the ages of magnetic inclination features, it has been possible to establish an age-depth model for all of the cores. Precise identification of the secular...
