New fossils referable to the Cancridae Latreille, 1802 extend the known stratigraphic range of the family into the middle Eocene and the geographic range into South America. Each genus within the family has been reevaluated within the context of the new material. A suite of diagnostic characters for each cancrid genus makes it possible to assign both extant and fossil specimens to genera and the two cancrid subfamilies, the Cancrinae Latreille, 1802, and Lobocarcininae Beurlen, 1930, based solely upon dorsal carapace morphology. The podotrematous crab family Dakoticancridae includes four genera: Dakoticancer Rathbun, Tetracarcinus Weller, Avitelmessus Rathbun, and Seorsus Bishop, all known solely from the Late Cretaceous of North America. Lathelicocarcinus Bishop, originally referred to the family, must be reassigned. Fine details of anatomy, preserved on specimens of D. overanus Rathbun and A. grapsoideus Rathbun, permit description of genital openings and interpretation of functional morphology of appendages. Although one species, D. australis Rathbun, has been found associated with burrow structures, all were probably vagrant epifaunal animals on fine- to medium-grained siliciclastic substrata. Twelve taxa of chondrichthyan fossils from strata assigned to the Upper Pliocene of the Horcón Formation, Valparaiso region, central Chile, are described and prior records paleobiogeography and paleoenvironmental implications are discussed. The fauna includes Callorhinchus sp., Heterodontus sp., Carcharodon carcharias, Isurus oxyrinchus, Galeorhinus galeus, Carcharhinus brachyurus, Hexanchus griseus, Squatina sp., Pristiophorus sp., Rajidae, Dasyatidae and Myliobatidae.
