Selected Fuel Properties of Biodiesel Produced from Shea Butter and Palm Kernel Oil 111
Adesoji, Ogunlade Clement; Simeon, Jekayinfa Olayinka; B., Olaniyi A..
Tranesterification reaction was carried out on raw Shea Butter Oil (SBO) and Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) to separate the ester from glycerol using ethanol in the presence of potassium hydroxide as catalyst. The properties of biodiesel (ethyl ester) obtained from varying proportions of diesel were experimentally determined and compared with that of conventional diesel. The fatty acid profile of the oil samples were determined using standard methods. Four blends (10, 20, 25 and 30%) of SBO and PKO by volume with diesel oil were produced and fuel properties determined include viscosity, relative density, specific gravity, flash, cloud and pour points. Mean values of the six fatty acids (palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic) obtained for shea butter and palm kernel...

Effects of some kernel factors on palm kernel oil extraction using a screw press 111
Ezeoha, Sunday Louis.
Several factors are known to affect mechanical oil expression from oilseeds. In this study, the influence of kernel moisture content (KMC), kernel heating temperature (KHT), kernel heating duration (KHD) and kernel particle size (KPS) on palm kernel oil (PKO) yield by a mixed variety of oil-palm kernels using a locally fabricated screw press was investigated. The one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) experimental approach was employed. Design-Expert 8P (Version 8.0.6) software was used for statistical analysis of data. Within the range of values of variables studied, the results showed that at 5% significance level only kernel size significantly affected PKO yield. Thus, KPS is a critical factor in PKO extraction using the screw press. Oil-palm kernels should not be...

Characterization, physicochemical stability, and evaluation of in vitro digestibility of solid lipid microparticles produced with palm kernel oil and tristearin 116
Silva,Janaina Costa da; Borrin,Thais Ribeiro; Ruy,Pâmela; Brito,Thais Carvalho; Pinheiro,Ana Cristina; Vicente,António Augusto; Pinho,Samantha Cristina de.
Solid lipid particles have been investigated by food researchers due to their ability to enhance the incorporation and bioavailability of lipophilic bioactives in aqueous formulations. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the physicochemical stability and digestibility of lipid microparticles produced with tristearin and palm kernel oil. The motivation for conducting this study was the fact that mixing lipids can prevent the expulsion of the bioactive from the lipid core and enhance the digestibility of lipid structures. The lipid microparticles containing different palm kernel oil contents were stable after 60 days of storage according to the particle size and zeta potential data. Their calorimetric behavior indicated that they were composed of a...

Bioconversion of mixed free fatty acids to poly-3-hydroxyalkanoates by Pseudomonas putida BET001 and modeling of its fermentation in shake flasks 69
Makhdum Munawar,Khalil Munawar; Simarani,Khanom; Annuar,Mohamad Suffian Mohamad.
Background: The paper reports on the utilization of palm kernel oil (PKO) as a low cost renewable substrate for medium-chain-length poly-3-hydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHA) production by Pseudomonas putida BET001. Investigation on the effects of selected key variables on growth, mixed free fatty acids consumption and mcl-PHA production by the bacterial culture in the shaken flask system were carried out along with its kinetic modeling. Results: The biomass production, fatty acids consumption and mcl-PHA production were found favorable when the strain was cultured in mineral medium at pH 6-7,28°C, aeration surface-to-volume ratio of 0.4 x 10(6) m-1, 250 rpm agitation rate for 48 h. Mcl-PHA production by this strain showed mixed growth and non-growth associated...
