This paper presents a short summary of the knowledge on marine biotoxins. As toxins are known for their acute effects, they have been classified here according to the effects they cause in acute human poisoning incidents. Toxins may thus be distinguished into those that affect the nervous system (paralytic and other neurotoxins), memory (amnesic poisons), and the digestive system (diarrhetic toxins). Furthermore, newly emerging toxins, such as ciguatoxins or shark toxins, and factors that lead to the introduction of toxins in new areas, are presented. Relevant suggestions for further reading are given. |

The trembling of legs followed by increasing paralysis and eventual death, were recorded on specimens of the above sp from Sete region. EM studies of tissue showed paraspherical bodies measuring approx 61 nm with a size range of 58-65 nm. By experimentally infecting specimens with a purified viral suspension the following pathogenesis was observed: in greater than 60 per cent of the specimens, trembling of the legs began within 6 days, growing very pronounced on the 8th day, leading to a general paralysis and 9 days after the infection a mortality rate of 70-80 per cent was recorded. The following characteristics of the virus are noted: its cytoplasmic localisation, paraspherical form, size ranging from 60-70 nm and the absence of an envelope. Considering... |

Neospora caninum is a recently recognized protozoan parasite of animals. Until 1988, it was misdiagnosed as Toxoplasma gondii. Neospora caninum or Neospora-like parasites cause paralysis and death in dogs and neonatal mortality and abortion in cattle, sheep, goats and horses. Its life cycle is not known. Tachyzoites and tissue cysts are the only asexual stages known and the carnivorous definitive host is not known. Transplacental transmission is the only known natural route of infection. |

ABSTRACT: This report aimed to describe a case of peripheral neuropathy in a copper-deficient goat, and highlights the clinical, and pathological features of the disease. The goat had low body score, hyporexia, alopecia, achromotrichia, left hindlimb protraction, paralysis with dragging of digit and difficulty to stand up and microcytic normochromic anemia. Copper concentration in serum was markedly lower (2.0µmol L-1) whereas the iron serum content was significantly increased (51.0µmol L-1). The main gross alteration was the reduction of the quadriceps vastus laterallis muscle volume. Histologically, there was atrophy of the quadriceps vastus laterallis muscle and presence of satellite cells, infiltration of lymphocytes, macrophages and replacement of the... |
