Sensitivity of mortality reporting by the French oyster farmers ArchiMer
Lupo, Coralie; Osta Amigo, Axel; Mandard, Y. V.; Peroz, C.; Arzul, Isabelle; Francois, Cyrille; Garcia, Celine; Renault, Tristan.
As diseased shellfish show only very seldom symptoms, any mortality event can be a disease suspicion. In theory, monitoring of mortality events in shellfish can thus provide a tool for early detection of infectious diseases in order to implement effective control measures. This consists in passive mortality event reporting by shellfish farmers to the local competent authority. Sensitivity of the detection of mortality events is a key quality indicator for this type of surveillance. Since 2008, increased mortality outbreaks occur in Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas in France, leading to economic losses. It is important to evaluate how much the outbreaks have altered the quality indicators of the reporting system and if this modification is long-standing,...

Epidemiological surveillance, an essential tool for animal health and public health MV&Z
Côrtes, José de Angelis.
Characterized as a regular activity, the purpose of epidemiological surveillance is to obtain knowledge about health conditions and disease occurrence, providing support for control and / or erradication programs. Because of its comprehensive, dynamic and permanent nature, this activity has been qualified as a key function of national animal and human health systems. Epidemiological survey is its main tool and the means to obtain data includes passive and active surveillance, disease surveillance and monitoring, a more specific activity that has the objective of obtaining additional knowledge about aspects of an epidemiological pattern or performance of health-related operations.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to characterize the outbreaks of equine infectious anemia (EIA) identified, between the years 2009 and 2015, in the western region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We identified 26 positive horses on 24 properties. Each positive property was considered an outbreak of the disease. The diagnoses were made using the agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test as a part of the sanitary checks conducted during animal transportation or certification of the horse´s sanitary status. The positive properties included farms or horse barns, and the infected animals were used for ranch work, sports, or reproduction. One outbreak was identified in animals that were being illegally transported from Argentina to Brazil. Fifteen outbreaks...
