Bewertung von Pflanzenbeständen und Milchleistung in Ökobetrieben Nordwestdeutschlands 21
Vormann, M.; von Borstel, U.; Leisen, E..
In order to produce high quality forages, the species composition of the grass sward is of special importance. A good measure for estimating the quality of grass swards is the so-called mean Futterwertzahl of the sward by Klapp (1965) which is further referred to as Sward Quality Index (SQI). On 56 organic farms the average SQI of the farm has been calculated and the yield proportion of different species of the sward has been calculated for different regions of Northwest Germany. Within 22 organic farms with grassland farming exclusively, a comparison of the milk yields (kg ECM/cow and year) and the mean SQI of the grassland has been calculated with special regard to the concentrate rates fed to the cows. In tendency the results show lower SQI in farms...

Red clover for silage: management impacts on yield during the third year after sowing 21
O'Kiely, P.; O'Riordan, E.G.; Black, A.D..
Red clover is a perennial legume considered productive for a limited number of years. This experiment quantified the impacts of cultivar, companion grass, harvest schedule and nitrogen fertiliser on crop yield in the third year after reseeding, and compared these to grass receiving inorganic N fertiliser. Herbage yield was increased in swards with red clover by including ryegrass in the seed mix, by not applying inorganic N fertiliser in mid-March and by adopting the early harvest schedule. Red clover cultivar did not affect annual yield.

Experience with grazing varieties of Lucerne 21
Søegaard, K..
The knowledge about Lucerne as part of the grass sward in systems with intensive grazing is limited, therefore some additional registration has been made both in year 2007 when the sward was established and during the period of utilization in 2008 (Table 1). As seen, is the proportion of Lucerne in 4 of the farms both in May and August at a very low level.

Starz, Walter; Steinwidder, Andreas; Pfister, Rupert; Rohrer, Hannes.
In this study slurry, manure and compost from dairy cattle were used on a newly sown meadow. The influence of these three fertilisers on botany and forage yield were tested in a randomized block design. The amount of farm fertilizers was calculated by 1.2 LU ha-1 considering quantity storage losses. No differences between used organic farm fertilisers in botanical composition were found. The highest LAI (4,7 ground level) and the highest dry matter yield of 11,045 kg DM ha-1 were measured in slurry fertilisation.

Nitrogen and Energy Utilization on Conventional and Organic Dairy Farms in Norway 21
Koesling, Matthias.
To improve environmental sustainability it is important that all sectors in a society contribute to improving the utilization of inputs as energy and nutrients. In Norway, dairy farming contributes with an important share to the added value from the agricultural sector, although there is little information available about utilization of energy and nitrogen (N). Many results on sustainability have been published on dairy farming. However, due to Norway’s Nordic climatic conditions, mountainous and rugged topography and an agricultural policy that can design its own prices and subsidies, results from other countries are hardly representative for Norwegian conditions. To bridge this gap, the objective of this study was to analyse if the utilisation of...

The development of organic milk production systems 21
Weller, R.
The main objective of the 4-year project was to provide both qualitative and quantitative information on the development of two contrasting organic dairy systems, including the benefits and limitations of each system and also the opportunities for improving the systems. The first system (SS system) was based on an extensive and sustainable system, with the objective of achieving a high level of self sufficiency and sustainability by minimising the importation of nutrients into the system. Therefore, the cropping rotation for the system included forage crops for grazing and conservation and also cereal crops to provide both grain (for feeding as a concentrate) and straw for bedding. The main objective of the second system (PC system) was to change from a...

Verfilzte Narben, Beschattung...

Hay production in North Europa 21
Kristensen, T.; Søegaard, K..
Hay feeding might have some advantaged in relation to herd health and reduces the risk for contamination of the milk with spores. Hay production compared to silage is more resource intensive – like use of energy for drying. Hay from two types of herb enriched grass swards and the traditional grassland showed no difference in intake or milk production when compared at three organic farms. Feed efficiency tended to be lower than standards based on silage feeding.

Artssammensætningen i græsmarken afgør mineralindholdet i afgrøden 21

Growth, competitive strength and herbage quality of herbs in multispecies leys 21
Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J.; Askegaard, M..
Herbs are established in many organic grasslands due to expected beneficially properties of nutritive value and biodiversity. However, knowledge about grassland herbs is limited. Three mixtures were therefore established at different grazing/cutting management and slurry application. The competitiveness of the species varied very much. Plantain (Plantago lanceolata) and lucerne (Medicargo sativa) competed best under cutting, opposite chicory (Cichorium intybus) that competed best under grazing. Caraway (Carum carvi), burnet (Poterium sanguisorba) and lotus (Lotus coniculatus) had a relative low competitiveness. Slurry application did not affect the proportion of non-leguminous herbs. The nutritive value differed very much. Caraway had the highest and...

Simulation of effect of climate, soils and management on N2O emission from grassland 21
Chatskikh, D.; Olesen, J.E.; Berntsen, J.; Regina, K.; Yamulki, S..
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas with a high contribution from agricultural soils and emissions that depend on soil type, climate, crops and management practices. The N2O emissions therefore need to be included as an integral part of environmental assessment of agricultural production systems. A dynamical algorithm for N2O production and emission from agricultural soils was developed and included in the FASSET whole-farm model. The model simulated carbon and nitrogen (N) turnover on a daily basis. Both nitrification and denitrification was included in the model as sources for N2O production, and the N2O emissions were simulated to depend on soil microbial and physical conditions. The model was tested on experimental data of N2O emissions from...

Organic Forage Crop Production in Atlantic Zones: an Ecophysiological Approach 21
Pedrol, Nuria; Martínez, Antonio.
Within a schedule of long-term organic forage crop rotations, two mixed stands of ryegrass-clover were evaluated as following crops after winter cereal-legume mixtures under different sowing and tillage methods in Asturias (N. Spain). Significant differences were found in productivity, sward components, chemical composition and in growth dynamics. The crop sequence perennial ryegrass-white clover established under a triticale-field bean canopy produced an additional 6 t DM/ha, compared with oat-vetch followed by Italian ryegrass-red clover under regular post-harvest sowing, thus being a promising method for improving organic forage productions with minimum tillage. Changes in productivity and feeding values observed for both these ryegrass-clover swards...

Herbs in high producing organic grasslands – effect of management 21
Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J.; Askegaard, M..
In many organic grasslands herbs are established due to their expected beneficial properties for nutritive value and biodiversity. However, knowledge about grassland herbs is limited. Three mixtures were therefore established at different grazing/cutting and fertilization managements to examine the growth potential and feeding value. The competitiveness of the different species varied greatly. Chicory, plantain and caraway were competitive in mixtures with traditional grassland species. Lotus and salad burnet were weak competitors and chervil and sainfoin were very weak. The feeding value was also highly variable. Caraway had high digestibility of organic matter, also compared with the traditional grassland species, whereas plantain and salad burnet had...
