Siliereignung und Silagequalität von Luzerne- bzw. Rotkleegras in Abhängigkeit vom Begleitgrasanteil Organic Eprints
Loges, Ralf; Thaysen, Johannes.
Rotklee bzw. Luzerne in Reinsaat bzw.

Dry matter yields and quality of organic lupin/cereal mixtures for wholecrop forage Organic Eprints
Azo, W M; Lane, G P F; Cannon, N C; Davies, W P.
In view of climate change predictions and the general desirability of increasing the amount of home grown protein, a case exists for the investigation of lupins and lupin/cereal bicrop combinations as wholecrop forage on organic farms. A replicated randomised block trial is described which took place at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, in 2005. This involved spring sown blue, white and yellow lupins, millet, wheat and triticale and lupin/cereal bi-crops. Data for dry matter yields for wholecrop silage, crude protein, MAD fi bre content and estimated ME, are presented for a single harvest. It is concluded that white lupins and white lupin bi-crops with spring wheat or triticale offer the best prospects for a viable wholecrop forage crop in an...

Anthracnose bei Rotklee: Ansätze zur Züchtung resistenter Sorten Organic Eprints
Jacob, Irene; Hartmann, Stephan.

Loges, Ralf; Taube, Friedhelm.
Rotklee bzw.

The role and management of whole-crop forage for organic ruminants Organic Eprints
Powell, Dan.
There is a large base of evidence that fermented whole crop forages can be grown and conserved successfully in temperate conditions such as the UK offers. As preservatives are generally eschewed in organic production the crop is generally cut earlier in line with recommendations for fermented whole crop forages. Starch and protein levels will be lower at earlier harvest dates. This results in penalties in yield, greater losses in dry matter during fermentation and can lead to secondary fermentation when the clamp is opened to feed. Most of the research work reviewed is based on cereal whole-crop, although there is a developing body of knowledge based on intercropping of cereals and legumes as well as crops such as kale. Much of this work is addressed at...

Organic Eprints
Kleen, Jana; Gierus, Martin; Taube, Friedhelm.
The objective of this study was to compare the agronomic performance of different forage legume species submitted to different management systems, i.e. grazing, silage-cut and simulated grazing to find alternatives for white clover. The experiment was established in 2003 and 2004 as binary swards with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) as the companion grass with three replicates in two different sites on the experimental station “Lindhof” of the University of Kiel. Legume species were arranged within each management system as completely randomised blocks. Results of agro-nomic performance of the first production years in 2004 and 2005 (DM-yield, botanical composition, N-yield, N-content) are presented for white clover swards (Trifolium repens L.), red...

Futterqualität, Vorfruchtleistung und Nitratauswaschung von über Winter beweideten Kleegrasbeständen Organic Eprints
Loges, Dr Ralf; Westphal, Dr Derk; Taube, Prof. Dr. Friedhelm.
In comparison to harvesting, grazing is less cost intensive. For economical reasons an extended duration of grazing period is recommended. Grazing during winter can cause pasture damages, which is of minor relevance for older grass clover grown on arable land, which will be ploughed in the following spring. Against this background yield and forage quality of 3 different legume species, i.e. white clover, red clover and alfalfa, grown in binary mixtures with two grass species, perennial ryegrass and tall fescue, respectively, were examined before grazing the third growth in autumn or winter. Nitrate leaching losses during winter and yield of the following spring wheat were recorded. Yield and forage quality of the total sward was not significantly...

Capacity of Deep Rooted Species to Take Up Water and Nutrients from Deep Soil Layers Organic Eprints
Dresbøll, Dorte Bodin; Rasmussen, Camilla Ruø; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristensen.
Introduction Agricultural cropping systems generally have a limited use of water and nutrients from the soil below 1m depth. However, several plant species have much deeper root systems, and if included in cropping systems, these would allow for exploitation of otherwise unused resources from deep soil layers. In a unique facility consisting of 12, 4m high ‘root towers’ we examined the root development and root activity in different soil layers of different biannual/perennial plant species. Methods Four plant species lucerne (Medicago sativa), rosinweed (Silphium integrifolium), intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium), and dyers voad (Isatis tinctoria) were grown in soil in large rhizotrons (root towers) (4m×1.2m×0.6 m). Root growth was...

Organic Fodder Production in Intensive Organic Livestock Production in Europe: Recent Scientific Findings and the Impact on the Development of Organic Farming Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold; Böhm, Herwart.
Organic farming is practiced in over 100 countries on more than 26 million hectares. In the European Union (EU 25), about 5.6 million hectares of farm land are certified under the EU organic farming regulation 2092/91/EEC. Since 1992, these figures have been increased six times. The 160,000 organic farms in the EU 25 keep about 1.5 million cattle, 1.6 million sheep, 0.55 million pigs and 17.3 million chickens. Two different intensities can be identified: extensive and intensive organic animal husbandry. Extensive animal husbandry is mostly found on low productive and remote areas and carried out with beef cattle, sheep and goats. These systems cope easily with the organic farming standards. Intensive organic animal husbandry is found in more productive...

Steigerung der Anthracnoseresistenz von Rotklee durch rekurrente Selektion Organic Eprints
Jacob, Irene; Hartmann, Stephan; Schubiger, Franz Xaver; Struck, Christine.

Farming systems comparison study, Bioforsk Arable Crops Division, Apelsvoll Organic Eprints
A long-term farming systems comparison study was initiated at Bioforsk Arable Crops Division, Apelsvoll, in 1989. The aim was to compare on a model farm level differences in yields, nutrient runoff, nutrient balances and economical results for conventional, integrated and organic dairy and cash crop farming systems. The vision of the project was to develop farming systems that minimized the runoff of nutrients and pesticide residues, produced healthy crops with optimal nutritional value, and gave satisfying yields and economic results. In 2000, the system was changed so that the term “integrated” was replaced by “optimal”, defined as the treatment that achieves the maximum yield per kilo leached nitrogen. The study comprises a field lysimeter with 12...

Stickstoffdüngewirkung und Stickstofftransfereffizienz von Düngemitteln auf Basis von Kleegrasbiomasse im Gefäßversuch mit Weidelgras (Lolium perenne) Organic Eprints
Benke, A.; Rieps, A.; Zikeli, Sabine; Möller, Kurt.
The aim of our research was to compare the N fertilizer value of different clover-grass (CG) based fertilizers. A pot trial was set up with 8 treatments with Lolium perenne: fresh CG, ensiled CG, compost from CG, solid manure and liquid manure from dairy cows fed with CG, biogas digestate, an unfertilized and a mineral fertilizer control. Our hypothesis was that compared to composting, and to other treatments (e.g. silage) biogas digestates allow for a more efficient N fertilization due to a lower C/N ratio and a higher share of NH4 +. Dry matter yield, C/N ratio, N concentration, N release and Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) were examined. The results show the highest overall NUE, N release and yield in the treatment with biogas digestate and the lowest...

National-scale modelling of N leaching in organic and conventional horticultural crop rotations - policy implications Organic Eprints
Schmutz, Dr Ulrich; Rayns, Dr Francis; Firth, Mr Chris; Nendel, Dr Claas; Lillywhite, Mr Rob; Zhang, Dr Kefeng; Rahn, Dr Clive.
A method is presented to model N leaching in crop rotations on a national scale. Representative crop rotations for different regions and soil types are used in the cross-disciplinary, plant, soil, environment & economics model EU-Rotate_N. By comparing contrasting farming systems (organic and conventional) in the UK, their strengths and weaknesses in delivering environmental and economic sustainability can be assessed. Modelling results show that the annual leaching in different horticultural rotations and UK regions, using median weather, is within the range of 13-88 kg N/ha/year for organic and 54-130 kg N /ha/year for conventional. The weighted annual average figures are 39 kg N/ha/year for organic and 81 kg N/ha/year for conventional, respectively....

Jacob, Irene; Hartmann, Stephan; Schubiger, Franz Xaver; Struck, Christine.
Southern Anthracnose, a fungal disease of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) caused by Colletotrichum trifolii, seems to gain more importance in agriculture in Germany. This investigation should examine whether there is a simple possibility to increase the resistance in cultivars or breeding material through recurrent selection. Six red clover cultivars listed in Germany were used for this study. The survival rate after one and two cycles of recurrent selection was increased by 17 and 26 percentage points compared to the parental population. The advance in resistance generally was higher in populations with lower original resistance.

Quantifying biological nitrogen fixation of different catch crops, and residual effects of roots and tops on nitrogen uptake in barley using in-situ 15N labelling Organic Eprints
Li, Xiaoxi; Sørensen, Peter; Li, Fucui; Petersen, Søren O.; Olesen, Jørgen E..
Background and aims Contributions of legume-based catch crops (LBCCs) to succeeding cereals may be significant. We quantified biological N fixation (BNF) and residual N effects of contrasting CC tops and roots. Methods BNF of three LBCCs (red clover, winter vetch, perennial ryegrass-red clover mixture) was quantified in microplots by 15N labelling. Their residual effects on spring barley were tested against two non-LBCCs (perennial ryegrass, fodder radish) after spring incorporation of CC tops or roots in monoliths. Results Total N accumulated in LBCCs was 153–226 kg N ha−1, of which 62–66 % was derived from BNF in tops and 31–46 % in macro-roots (0–18 cm soil). Macro-roots represented 31–50 % of total plant N. LBCCs showed similar capacity for...
