Expression of MuRF1 and MAFbx in Donor and Recipient Muscles after Musculocutaneous Nerve Transection and Partial Pectoralis Major Muscle Transfer for Reconstruction of Elbow Flexion in Rats International Journal of Morphology
Yang,Shengbo; Yue,Ning; Zeng,Xueqing.
The expression of MuRF1 and MAFbx in a denervated muscle has previously been studied. However, the expression of MuRF1 and MAFbx in the recipient and donor muscles after muscle transfer for reconstruction of joint function has not been sufficiently investigated. Forty-two adult Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 7 groups: normal, 1 w post-, 2 w post-, and 4 w post-musculocutaneous nerve transection; and 1 w post-, 2 w post-, and 4 w post-reconstruction of elbow flexion. Muscle wet weights were assessed, and MuRF1 and MAFbx mRNA expressions were detected by polymerase chain reaction. The length of the oblique part of the pectoralis major of an SD rat is sufficient for suture to the insertion of the biceps brachii tendon. The muscle wet weight and the wet...

Practical Assessment of Spaghetti Breast in Diverse Genetic Strain Broilers Reared under Different Environments Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Montagna,FS; Garcia,G; Nääs,IA; Lima,NDS; Caldara,FR.
ABSTRACT Brazilian processing plants have identified the so-calledspaghetti breast myopathy characterized by muscular dystrophy of unknown etiology. This study aimed at estimating the incidence of spaghetti breast myopathyin broilers from three commercial genetic strains (Ross, Cobb, Hubbard) reared in two different housing systems (DH, Dark house, and TS, Tunnel system), presenting different controlled ventilation systems and light availability. Breast meat samples (n=5,580) were collected and macroscopically evaluated for spaghetti breast myopathy according to a 0-2 scale, as 0 = normal, 1 = intermediate or moderate, and 2 = severe. A higher number of broilers reared in DH presented normal breasts and moderate myopathy relative to TS-reared birds. Ross...

Sensitivity to halothane and its relationship to the development of PSE (Pale, Soft, Exudative) meat in female lineage broilers BABT
Marchi,Denis Fabrício; Trindade,Marco Antônio; Oba,Alexandre; Soares,Adriana Lourenço; Ida,Elza Iouko; Ferraz,José Bento Sterman; Michelan Filho,Tércio; Ziober,Iris Lamberti; Shimokomaki,Massami.
This work aimed to evaluate female lineage broilers for halothane sensitivity and for their susceptibility to the subsequent development of PSE meat. The halothane test was carried out in an anesthetic chamber with 3.0% halothane. The unconscious birds were examined for leg muscle rigidity. If one or both legs became extended and rigid, the birds were classified as halothane sensitive (HAL+), while unresponsive birds were classified as halothane negative (HAL-). The results showed that of 298 birds aged 42 days old, 95.6% were HAL- and 4.4% were HAL+. A sample of pectoralis major muscle was collected from HAL- (n=105) and HAL+ (n=13) birds. The pH and breast fillet color were determined at 4ºC, 24 hours post-mortem. Interestingly, only 2.5% of HAL+ birds...

Sources and levels of selenium on breast meat quality of broilers Ciência Rural
Boiago,Marcel Manente; Borba,Hirasilva; Leonel,Fábio Roberto; Giampietro-Ganeco,Aline; Ferrari,Fábio Borba; Stefani,Lenita Moura; Souza,Pedro Alves de.
Qualitative characteristics of breast meat of broilers fed diets supplemented with different concentrations (0; 0.3 and 0.5mg kg-1) of selenium in the form of selenomethionine and sodium selenite were analyzed. A total of 1050 one-day-old male Cobb broiler chicks were arranged factorially at random to five treatments (two concentrations x two sources + control diet without addition of selenium) with 7 replications of thirty birds each and received an isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets in all phases according to their ages (1-21, 22-35, and 36-42 days). At 42 days of age, TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) after storage at 4ºC for one, seven and 15 days and also after 30 days under freezing temperatures (-15°C), color (CIELab), water holding...

Phenotypic correlations among meat quality traits in broilers Ciência Rural
Silva,Luana Bertollini de Jesus; Gaya,Leila de Genova; Madureira,Ana Paula; Tarôco,Graziela; Ferraz,José Bento Sterman; Mourão,Gerson Barreto; Mattos,Elisângela Chicaroni de; Michelan Filho,Tércio.
The goals of this research were to estimate the phenotypic correlations among various meat quality traits from a male broiler line and to describe the relation among these variables. Phenotypical correlations were determined among quality traits, isolating the effects of slaughter date, the age of the mother and sex. The evaluated traits were pH measurements taken at time 0 and at 6 and 24 hours after slaughtering, color parameters, water loss due to exudation, thawing and cooking of the meat, and shear force. Important associations (P<0.01) were found to be significant and, in most cases, weak or moderate, varying from -0.35 to 0.28. The initial pH of the meat was not associated (P>0.05) to the other traits of the meat, whereas the pH at 24...
