Résultats de la mise en oeuvre des réseaux REPHY et SRN – Zones côtières de la Manche orientale et de la baie sud de la Mer du Nord – Bilan de l’année 2016. ArchiMer
Lefebvre, Alain; Ambiaud, Antonin.
The coastal zone of the Nord – Pas de Calais / Picardie showed dysfonctioning patterns of the ecosystem considered to be link to human activities along shores. These results in regular massive development of species, such as the phytoplanktonic seaweed, Phaeocystis sp. which life cycle was partly linked to nutrients availability and consequently to anthropogenic inputs. As part of the evaluation of the influence of continental inputs on the marine environment (nitrates, phosphates,…) and on potential eutrophication processes, of the estimation of the efficiency of the sewage treatments plants in the possible elimination of dumpings and in order to establish a long-term survey to follow up the change in coastal waters quality, the regional nutrients...

Succession of primary producers and micrograzers in a coastal ecosystem dominated by Phaeocystis globosa blooms ArchiMer
Grattepanche, Jean-david; Breton, Elsa; Brylinski, Jean-michel; Lecuyer, Eric; Christaki, Urania.
The community structures and succession of phytoplankton, protozooplankton and copepods were studied from February 2007 to July 2009 in a coastal area of the eastern English Channel subject to Phaeocystis globosa blooms. While diatom blooms preceded P. globosa blooms each year, the community structure and stock of heterotrophic protists appeared to be related to the dominant P. globosa life cycle stages. In 2007, the dominance of large colonies (> 100 mu m, up to 316 mu g C L(-1)), which resulted in a high biomass of healthy free cells (up to 132 mu g C L(-1)), accompanied high spirotrich ciliate stocks (up to 58 mu g C L(-1)) and high abundances of the copepods Acartia clausi and Temora longicornis (up to 11 ind. L(-1)). In 2008, the bloom which lasted...

Spectral fluorometric characterization of Haptophyte dynamics using the FluoroProbe: an application in the eastern English Channel for monitoring Phaeocystis globosa ArchiMer
Houliez, Emilie; Lizon, Fabrice; Thyssen, Melilotus; Artigas, Luis Felipe; Schmitt, Francois G..
In this study, we examined the possibility of using the FluoroProbe for monitoring the dynamics of the Haptophyte Phaeocystis globosa in the coastal waters of the eastern English Channel. The FluoroProbe was recalibrated by recording a new fingerprint for P. globosa and the use of this new fingerprint was tested through a series of laboratory and in situ experiments. The annual dynamics of P. globosa estimated using the FluoroProbe and by flow cytometry were similar. A strong relationship was found between the FluoroProbe estimates of P. globosa biomass expressed in terms of chlorophyll a equivalent per litre (eq. mu g L(-1)) and flow cytometric cell counts (r = 0.889, P < 0.001, n = 121). The FluoroProbe can be used to detect the flagellated cells as...

Trajectories of Changes in Phytoplankton Biomass, Phaeocystis globosa and Diatom (incl. Pseudo-nitzschia sp.) Abundances Related to Nutrient Pressures in the Eastern English Channel, Southern North Sea ArchiMer
Lefebvre, Alain; Dezécache, Camille.
The phytoplankton compartment is particularly reactive to changes in nutrient concentration and is used as a quality indicator. Using a simple numerical approach, the response of emblematic harmful taxa from the eastern English Channel and southern North Sea to changes in nutrient inputs was studied. The method is based on a diachronic approach using averaged maxima over sliding periods of six years (1994–2018). This gave a final dataset containing pairs of points (number of years) for explained and explanatory variables. The temporal trajectory of the relationship between each pair of variables was then highlighted. Changes were represented as long-term trajectories that allowed a comparison to a reference/average situation. In addition, the relevance of...

High resolution overview of phytoplankton spectral groups and hydrological conditions in the eastern English Channel using unsupervised clustering ArchiMer
Lefebvre, Alain; Poisson-caillault, Emilie.
As we move towards shipboard-underway and automated systems for monitoring water quality and assessing ecological status, there is a need to evaluate how effective the existing monitoring systems are, and how we could improve them. Considering the existing limitations for processing numerous and complex data series generated from automated systems, and because of processes involved in phytoplankton blooms, this paper proposes a data-driven evaluation of an unsupervised classifier to optimize the way we track phytoplankton, including harmful algal blooms (HABs), and to identify the main associated hydrological conditions. We used in situ data from a portable flow-through automatic measuring system coupled with a multi-fixed-wavelength fluorometer...

Impact of the Phaeocystis globosa spring bloom on the intertidal benthic compartment in the eastern English Channel: A synthesis ArchiMer

From 1999 to 2005, studies carried out in the frame of regional and national French programs aimed to determine whether the Phaeocystis globosa bloom affected the intertidal benthic communities of the French coast of the eastern English Channel in terms of composition and/or functioning. Study sites were chosen to cover most of the typical shore types encountered on this coast (a rocky shore, an exposed sandy beach and a small estuary). Both the presence of active Phaeocystis cells and their degradation product (foam) did have a significant impact on the studied shores. The primary production and growth rates of the kelp Saccharina latissima decreased during the bloom because of a shortage of fight and nutrient for the macroalgae. On sandy sediments, the...

Pseudo-nitzschia sp. diversity and seasonality in the southern North Sea, domoic acid levels and associated phytoplankton communities ArchiMer
Delegrange, A.; Lefebvre, Alain; Gohin, Francis; Courcot, L.; Vincent, D..
The diversity, toxicity and seasonality of Pseudo-nitzschia sp. were investigated from February to November 2012 in the southern Bight of the North Sea (SBNS) along the French coast. The identification of Pseudo-nitzschia species in this area was addressed for the first time in this study. Our results revealed a low species richness (3 distinct species) in association with moderate (102 pg mL−1) to high (263 pg mL−1) domoic acid (DA) levels in autumn and spring, respectively. Pseudo-nitzschia succession corresponded to the dominance of P. delicatissima in April–May (86% of total diatoms) as a co-occurring species of the Phaeocystis globosa bloom. Following the Phaeocystis bloom (May–September), P. pungens dominated markedly over P. fraudulenta and P....
