Analysis of glass eels catches from 1927 to 1998 in the Adour estuary showed different periods of successive decrease. Fishing periods between 1985 to 1993 were studied iwn order to observe impact of hydroclimatic conditions on the level of catch per unit of effort. This study took place in January when glass eels accessibility by the fishery was generally the highest. With hand and trawl netting that filtered the upper part of the water column, only individuals located close to the surface were accessible. Consequently, factors acting on the migration of glass eels in the water column have a great importance on the fishing success. Among environmental conditions, moon phase and temperature influence were determinant factors on catch variability but a lack... |
