Structural changes in Psidium guajava 'Paluma' leaves exposed to tropospheric ozone Acta Botanica
Tresmondi,Fernanda; Alves,Edenise Segala.
Psidium guajava 'Paluma' has being tested as an ozone (O3) bioindicator and responds with pigmentation between the veins on the adaxial surface, due to the accumulation of phenolic compounds. These compounds act as non-enzymatic antioxidants that neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS), formed from O3. This study aimed to evaluate the leaf structure of plants with and without visible symptoms and to establish these symptoms at the cellular level. Beside this we also aimed to detect structural changes that can minimize the effects of the O3 on the plant. The accumulation of phenolic substances, stomatal density and structural changes in P. guajava 'Paluma' leaf tissues exposed during the four seasons of the year were evaluated. The study was conducted at...

Obtaining cells of Physalis pubescens is of interest for studies of primary and secondary metabolic pathways, in the search for new active molecules. Our objectives were to evaluate the regeneration potential of explants from different parts of the plant, growth regulators to be used, and the determination of the growth curve of the callus. We used explants of leaf, root, stem and petiole, cultured on Murashige and Skoog medium with different concentrations of 6-benzylaminopurine and a-naphthaleneacetic acid. The explants from stem and petiole had a higher regeneration potential of the shoot to the treatment with 0.5 mg L-1 6-benzylaminopurine, and the explants of leave and root emitted more roots, with lower production of callus. The tests showed that the...

Teixeira,Maria Gessi; Carvalho,Marília; Leite,Marco Aurélio; Barbosa,Sandro; Santos filho,Plinio Rodrigues dos; Santos,Breno Régis.
Abstract The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of Salicylic acid, 2,4-D and 2-iP on the production of total phenolic and flavonoids as well in the levels of fukugetin and 7-epiclusianone in callus of Garcinia brasiliensis zygotic embryos. For this, Bacupari callus were exposed to different concentrations (0.0; 0.1; 1; 10; 100 µM) of Salicylic acid (SA) in the presence or in the absence of 72 μM 2-iP and 28.73 μM 2,4-D. The highest concentration of total phenolic occurred in the treatment with 100 μM SA in callus subcultured in the absence of 2,4-D and 2-iP, and with 10 μM SA in callus subcultured in the presence of these regulators. Concerning flavonoids, 2,4-D and 2-iP supplementation without the presence of the SA was sufficient for the highest...

A new enzymatic process for the treatment of phenolic pollutants BABT
Palma,Mauri Sergio Alves; Horn,Harald; Zilli,Mario; Pigatto,Gisele; Converti,Attilio.
This work aimed to develop a new economic enzymatic process to treat the phenolic pollutants using pure tyrosinase in stirred vessel and adopting temperature (T), pH, rotational speed (N), initial phenol (C P,o) and enzyme (C T) concentrations as independent variables. Experimental data of the residual phenol concentration (C P) were used to calculate the oxidation efficiency (η), initial oxidation rate (-r o) and time required to reach the end of reaction (t) that were selected as the responses. Under the optimal conditions (T = 45°C, pH 6.6, N = 400 rpm, C P,o = 100 ppm and C T = 50 U/mL), η was 88.1%, -r o = 10.2 mg L-1 min-1, t = 40 min. These results suggested that tyrosinase-rich crude extracts from vegetable byproducts could be quite promising.

Effects of Allelochemicals from Ficus microcarpaon Chlorella pyrenoidosa BABT
Jiang,Zhongyang; Peiyong,Guo; Chang,Cheinchi; Gao,Lili; Li,Shixiong; Wan,Jinjin.
This study was performed in order to isolate and identify unknown allelochemicals from Ficus microcarpa, and to investigate the inhibitory to bloom-forming of green alga Chlorella pyrenoidosa. Through gradient elution, fraction C2, whose inhibition of alga growth in diverse extracts was the strongest was shown to cause significant reductions of maximum quantum yield, as well as electron transport rates of C. pyrenoidosa. The study data also showed that the increase of fraction C2 concentration decreased the activity of total superoxide dismutase (SOD), but increased the activities of catalase (CAT) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content. These results demonstrate that the active fraction C2 not only induced the photoinhibition or photodamage of PSII reaction...

Relation between Seed Appearance and Phenolic Maturity: A Case Study Using Grapes cv. Carménère Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Fredes,Claudio; Von Bennewitz,Eduardo; Holzapfel,Eduardo; Saavedra,Felipe.
Sensory evaluation of grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) plays a key role in determining the harvest time in grapevine varieties. The harvest time of cv. Carménère is one of the latest of Chile. During the season 2007-2008, the evolution of the appearance of ‘Carménère’ seeds was evaluated as a harvest criterion, comparing it with the chemical and phenolic ripening. The samples were obtained from an organic vineyard located in Curicó Valley, Chile. Starting at 16 ºBrix, 100 seed berries samples were collected weekly from medium vigor vines in order to register photographically the ventral and dorsal sides of each seed. In addition to the seed tannins percentage, the extractable anthocyanins, total anthocyanins and total polyphenols index, as well as the titratable...

Phytochemical Evaluation of Wild and Cultivated Pepper (Capsicum annuum L. and C. pubescens Ruiz & Pav.) from Oaxaca, Mexico Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Vera-Guzmán,Araceli Minerva; Chávez-Servia,José Luis; Carrillo-Rodríguez,José Cruz; G. López,Mercedes.
Reports of the last decade show that some types of food and spices included in the human diet, such as pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) can have a positive effect on human health. The Mexican pepper germplasm is poorly documented with regard to variety and the amount of phytochemical compounds that it contains. In the present study, the variation of phytochemical compounds was evaluated in nine fruit variants (morphotypes) of wild and cultivated pepper grown in Oaxaca. ANOVA detected significant differences among pepper morphotypes and ripeness stages of fruits; vitamin C, total phenols, flavonoids, P-carotene, coordinated chromatic of color, and capsaicinoids. The highest values of vitamin C were found in 'Tabaquero', 'Guero' and 'Costeño' morphotypes (151.6...

Comparison of phenol content and antioxidant capacity of nuts Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Abe,Lucile Tiemi; Lajolo,Franco Maria; Genovese,Maria Inés.
Frequent nut intake is associated with protective effects against cardiovascular diseases. In addition to the generally high contents of unsaturated fatty acids, polyphenol compounds seem to be also implicated in health promoting effects of nuts due to their antioxidant properties. In this way, eleven different kinds of nuts, including pinhao seeds (Araucaria angustifolia) and Brazil nuts (Bertholletia excelsa), typical of Brazil, were analyzed for the content of phenol compounds, including the potent anti-mutagenic and anti-cancer ellagic acid, and antioxidant capacity of methanolic extracts. The antioxidant capacity varied a hundred times among the different nuts, from 1.2 to 120 mg of Trolox equivalents.100 g-1 (FW). Total ellagic acid was determined...

LIRA,Giselda Macena; LOPEZ,Ana Maria Queijeiro; NANES,Gabriela Marques de Farias; SILVA,Fernanda Geny Calheiros.
Abstract The impact of white onion as a natural antioxidant on the lipid profile of “Vila Franca” shrimp (Litopenaeus schmitti Burkenroad, 1938), during storage under freezing, was evaluated by changes in the composition of fatty acids, carotenoids, centesimal composition and phenols. The lipid content in the shrimp samples in natura and with white onion was dimmed after 45 days of storage under freezing. At zero time and during storage, lower levels of fatty acids were detected in the shrimp with addition of white onion. There was a reduction in the total carotenoid content of fresh and white onion shrimp samples after 45 days of storage, corresponding to 30% and 43%, respectively. After 90 days of storage, was detected a loss of 28%, in the samples with...

Effect of storage on the bioactive compounds, nutritional composition and sensory acceptability of pitanga jams Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
TOBAL,Thaise Mariá; RODRIGUES,Lais Veras.
Abstract Conventional and diet pitanga jams were prepared to assess the stability of bioactive compounds over 320 days of storage. The diet jam exhibited a higher nutritional value and bioactive compound content than the conventional jam. None of the tested jam formulations exhibited major changes in physical and nutritional characteristics during storage. However, the bioactive compound content and antioxidant activity were significantly reduced after processing pulp into jam and over the course of storage. Storage also had an effect on the sensory quality of the products. The conventional jam had higher flavour acceptance, whereas the diet jam exhibited lower scores for colour, appearance and overall acceptance.
