| This study of the Harbour Porpoise Phocoena phocoena (Linnaeus, 1758) has been undertaken in order to find out whether differences in size and growth rate between the skulls of males and females could be demonstrated. Stuart & Morejohn (1980) have established this phenomenon in the population of the north-eastern Pacific. The material on which this study is based, consists of 76 skulls present in the collection of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (RMNH), Leiden. They all belong to specimens stranded on the Dutch coast. In order to determine the age, of all these specimens the number of dentinal growth layer groups (GLG) in the teeth was counted.
