Evaluation of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Fertilizer Placement With Strip Tillage for Irrigated Pacific Northwest Corn Production NWISRL

Nutrient placement options with strip tillage (ST) can potentially improve plant nutrient utilization and increase crop yield compared to conventional fertilizer placement practices under conventional tillage (CT). The effects of tillage practice and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) placement on grain yield, biomass yield (whole plant, grain + cobs + stover), and N and P uptake of field corn (Zea mays L.) were assessed on four sites during 2007 and 2009 at the USDA-ARS Northwest Irrigation & Soils Research Laboratory at Kimberly, ID. During each year, two locations (eroded and not eroded from furrow irrigation) were utilized as study locations. Band placement of fertilizer with ST increased corn grain yield by 12.5 % (11 bu/acre) and 25.9% (26 bu/acre)...

Linking manure properties to phosphorus solubility in calcareous soils: Importance of the manure carbon to phosphorus ratio NWISRL

Land application of manure can increase P transfer in runoff, although the risk depends in part on the characteristics of the manure. We assessed this for calcareous soils using manures from swine (Sus domesticus) fed one of five barley varieties (Hordeum vulgare L.), including four low phytate mutants and a normal variety, to produce manures with a range of total P (6.8-4.9 g P water-soluble P (4.3-8.0 g P kg-'), total N/P ratios (2.5:1-5.5:1), and total C/P ratios (31:1-67:1). The nature of phosphorus in calcareous soils NWISRL

Calcareous soils (containing free lime) are common in many arid and semi-arid regions of North America and occur as inclusions in more humid regions. Phosphorus (P) is very reactive with lime. Following fertilizer application, P undergoes a series of reactions that gradually reduce its solubility. In most calcareous soils, there does not appear to be a strong agronomic advantage of any particular P source when managed properly. Organic matter can inhibit P fixation reactions to some extent. Some fertilizer recommendations call for additional P to be added when the soil contains high amounts of free lime.

Using extension phosphorus uptake research to improve Idaho's nutrient management planning program. NWISRL

Irrigated silage corn is the main crop used for phosphorus removal; however little is known about the actual amounts of phosphorus removed under southern Idaho growing conditions. The purpose of this study was to survey phosphorus removal by irrigated corn grown for silage in southern Idaho under variable soil test phosphorus concentrations. In this survey whole plant corn tissue phosphorus concentrations ranged from 0.116 to 0.307% total phosphorus and averaged 0.208%, which is lower than Natural Resources Conservation Services estimates used prior to 2007 (0.26% phosphorus) but higher than estimates used since 2007 (0.185%). The study was used by NRCS to update nutrient management planning software used by planners in Idaho.

Soil P transformations and distribution studies under water limited conditions that characterize many grasslands may provide further insight into the importance of abiotic and biotic P controls within grassdominated ecosystems. We assessed transformations between P pools across four sites spanning the shortgrass steppe, mixed grass prairie, and tallgrass prairie along a 400-mm precipitation gradient across the central Great Plains.
