Genotype selection and addition of fertilizer increases grain yield in upland rice in Suriname Acta Amazonica
NASCENTE,Adriano Stephan; KROMOCARDI,Ruby.
ABSTRACT The upland rice farmers in Suriname use local varieties and low level technologies in the field. As a result, the upland rice grain yield is low, at about 1 000 kg ha-1. Our objective was to evaluate the use of upland rice cultivars from Suriname and Brazil, and the effect of nitrogen, N, phosphorus, P, and potassium, K, fertilizers on cultivation variables. We undertook four field trials in the Victoria Area, in the Brokopondo District, using a randomized block design each with four replications. The most productive rice varieties were BRS Esmeralda (grain yield 2 903 kg ha-1) and BRS Sertaneja (2 802 kg ha-1). The highest grain yield of 2 620 kg ha-1 was achieved with a top dressing application of 76.41 kg N ha-1 20 days after sowing. For P, the...

The ceramic artifacts in archaeological black earth (terra preta) from Lower Amazon Region, Brazil: chemistry and geochemical evolution Acta Amazonica
Costa,Marcondes Lima da; Kern,Dirse Clara; Pinto,Alice Helena Eleotério; Souza,Jorge Raimundo da Trindade.
This paper carried out a chemical investigation of archaeological ceramic artifacts found in archaeological sites with Black Earth (ABE) in the Lower Amazon Region at Cachoeira-Porteira, State of Pará, Brazil. The ceramic artifacts, mostly of daily use, belong to Konduri culture (from 900 to 400 years BP). They are constituted of SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Na2O and P2O5; SiO2 and Al2O3 together add up to 80 % and indicate influence of acid rocks, transformed into clay minerals basically kaolinite. The relative high contents of P2O5 (2.37 % in average) come out as (Al,Fe)-phosphate, an uncommon fact in primitive red ceramics, but found in some roman and egyptian archaeological sites. The contents of the trace elements are similar or below the Earth's crust...

Relation between chemical composition of Grateloupia doryphora (Montagne) Howe, Gymnogongrus griffithsiae (Turner) Martius, and abiotic parameters Acta Botanica
Perfeto,Paulo Nelo Medeiros.
In Grateloupia doryphora and Gymnogongrus griffithsiae the seasonal variation of their chemical compounds was studied, establishing a relation with the physical and chemical properties of seawater. High values of proteins in the studied species were detected during the winter, 28.88% in G. doryphora and 26.68% in G. griffithsiae, corresponding to the maximum period of ammonium concentration in the marine environment. The variation in carbohydrates content showed an inverse relation with the proteins, with a maximum of 54.72% in G. doryphora and of 55.36% in G. griffithsiae, both in summer, positively correlated with salinity and temperature of sea water. Lipids content was low in both species. In G. doryphora the values ranged between 0.81 and 1.30% and,...

The effect of different soil properties on arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization of peanuts, sorghum and maize Acta Botanica
Carrenho,Rosilaine; Trufem,Sandra Farto Botelho; Bononi,Vera Lúcia Ramos; Silva,Eraldo Schunk.
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are important for plant growth since they increase mineral influx. However, symbiosis efficiency is affected by many environmental factors. This study evaluated the effects of different treatments (+/- phosphorus; +/- liming; +/- organic matter; field, sandy or clayey soil textures) on root colonization (RC) of peanuts, sorghum and maize. The combination of these resulted in seventy-two treatments. The 2×2×2×3×3 factorial experiment was laid out in a randomized design. All data were subjected to variance analysis and the means were compared (Tukey at P<0.05). Three months after seed germination, roots were collected to evaluate the percentage of RC. Results showed that soil texture and liming were the most important...

Effects of forest structure on litter production, soil chemical composition and litter-soil interactions Acta Botanica
Capellesso,Elivane Salete; Scrovonski,Kellin Luana; Zanin,Elisabete Maria; Hepp,Luiz Ubiratan; Bayer,Cimélio; Sausen,Tanise Luisa.
ABSTRACT Litter production in forest ecosystems is a major indicator of primary productivity because litter helps incorporate carbon and nutrients from plants into the soil and is directly involved in plant-soil interactions. To our knowledge, few studies have investigated the relationship between species diversity and ecosystem processes in subtropical forest fragments. In this work, we determined forest structural parameters and assessed seasonal leaf litter input, leaf decomposition rate, litter quality and soil characteristics in two subtropical Atlantic Forest fragments. Litter production was greater in the native fragment with the higher species diversity (FN1). The two native fragments (FN1 and FN2) differed in basal area, volume and dominance in...

Preliminary analysis on the use of Trophic State Indexes in a brazilian semiarid reservoir Biological Sciences
Lima, Paulo de Freitas; Sousa, Mart Som Reis; Porfírio, André Ferreira; Almeida, Beatriz Soares; Freire, Rogério Herlon Furtado; Santaella, Sandra Tédde.
The Carlson’s (1977) Trophic State Index (TSI) is a widely employed tool to estimate the degree of eutrophication in a reservoir. In Brazil, the need of a classification system that would take into account regional characteristics employed adjusted indexes generated by data from reservoirs in the southeastern region of the country. Current research compares responses for Carlson’s TSI (1977) and its derivations for Brazilian reservoirs from data collected in the Pereira de Miranda Reservoir (State of Ceará, Brazil), and analyzes the influence of local conditions on results and their applicability to reservoirs in the semiarid region. TSIs were calculated by data on total phosphorus, chlorophyll a and water transparency. The reservoir was estimated as...

Paraitinga and Biritiba reservoirs are part of Sistema Produtor Alto Tietê and they play an important role at the public water supply. The purpose of this study is to understand the mass balance of nitrogen and phosphorus that can influence the eutrophication process in reservoirs during the filling phase, and provide information for the implementation of mechanisms to manage water quality. Water samples were collected from August 2005 until May 2006. Concentrations of total phosphorus (PT) and total nitrogen (NT) were measured and the mass balance and loads were estimated. Paraitinga reservoir presented retention of NT and PT during the dry season and export during the rainy season; whilst at Biritiba reservoir we evidenced retention of NT and PT for both...

Azospirillum lipoferum and nitrogen fertilization effect on chlorophyll content, nutrients uptake and biometric properties of Zea mays L. Agrociencia
Davaran-Hagh,Elnaz; Mirshekari,Bahram; Reza-Ardakani,Mohammad; Farahvash,Farhad; Rejali,Farhad.
Integrated nutrient management is a major agronomic practice which brings together all methods to support plants nutritional requirement. However, the interaction of these methods together is very complex and needs to be studied in different climatic conditions. So, the effect of nitrogen fertilizer and Azospirillum lipoferum inoculation on maize (Zea mays L.) growth, yield and nutrients uptake was determined in this study. The hypothesis was that the bacterial inoculation decreases the need for N fertilizer application without reducing plant yield. Therefore, we carried out a factorial experiment in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Nitrogen at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 % concentrations of the recommended dose, i.e. 150 kg N ha-1...

Abstract The long tradition of green bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivation in Croatia has resulted in the development of a landraces adapted to specific areas and chosen to suit different dietary habits. The hypothesis of our study was that nutritional quality (content of proteins, sugars, fibres, calcium, potassium and phosphorus in fresh pods) of 14 widely grown Croatian green bean accessions is affected by origin and morphotype. The analysed accessions were grown in non-replicated field plots where morphotypes were classified. The gene pool of adscription (Andean vs. Mesoamerican) of each accession was determined with the phaseolin marker, whereas nutritional quality traits were analysed according to standard analytical methods. The relationships...

Osmotic stress induced by polyethylene-glycol alters macronutrient concentrations in sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) plants in vitro Agrociencia
Castañeda-Castro,Odón; Gómez-Merino,Fernando C.; Trejo-Téllez,Libia I.; Pastelín-Solano,Miriam C..
The potential capacity of plant roots to absorb water and nutrients generally declines in osmotic-stressed plants, presumably because of a reduction in the nutrient element demand, and such decrease varies among plant genotypes. In order to investigate the effect of the osmotic stress caused by polyethylene-glycol 6000 (PEG) on the macronutrient concentration in sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) in vitro, we established a factorial experiment with a completely randomized distribution. Study factors were variety (Mex 69-290 and CP 72-2086) and PEG in the nutrient medium (0, 3, 6 and 9 %, to generate osmotic potential corresponding to -0.18, -0.45, -0.65 and -0.80 MPa, respectively), which resulted in eight treatments, with five replicates each. The experimental...

Evaluation of an inexpensive needle test for the diagnosis of phosphorus deficiency and management of phosphorus supplementation for cattle: A multiple case study Anais da ABC (AABC)
MALAFAIA,PEDRO; GARCIA,FELIPE Z.; LOPES,SAMARA P.; SOUZA,VINÍCIUS C.; CANELLA FILHO,CAMILLO F.C.; COSTA,DIOGO F.A.; VEIGA,CRISTIANO C.P..
ABSTRACT The needle test (NT) is a point-of-care test developed in Brazil to evaluate the Phosphorus (P) status in cattle. Based on bone resistance, the NT is a very inexpensive method which allows the diagnosis of any degree of P deficiency in a fast and simple way in vivo and directly on farm. The NT measures three levels of resistance in the transverse process (TP) of the lumbar vertebrae: a) TP that are impenetrable and result in warping of the needle (P healthy animals); b) TP offering some resistance to the penetration (animals with subclinical P deficiency); and c) TP which has minimal resistance to penetration (clinical P deficiency). This manuscript presents results from a series of case studies to evaluate the hypothesis that the NT could be used...

Plant- and microbial-based mechanisms to improve the agronomic effectiveness of phosphate rock: a review Anais da ABC (AABC)
Arcand,Melissa M.; Schneider,Kim D..
Deficiency in plant-available phosphorus is considered to be a major limiting factor to food production in many agricultural soils. Mineral resources are necessary to restore soil phosphorus content. In regions where conventional fertilizers are not used due to cost limitations or to mitigate adverse environmental effects, local sources of phosphate rock are being increasingly recognized for potential use as alternative phosphorus fertilizers. The main obstacle associated with using directly applied ground phosphate rock is that the phosphate released is often unable to supply sufficient plant-available phosphorus for crop uptake. Plantand microbial-based mechanisms are low-cost, appropriate technologies to enhance the solubilization and increase the...
