Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of silicon fertilization on gas exchange, leaf anatomy, and ultrastructural characteristics of passion fruit (Passiflora edulis). The treatments comprised four concentrations of silicon (0, 0.28, 0.55, and 0.83 g per pot) at 1% silicic acid solution (SiO2.XH2O). This solution was applied around the stems of the plants. The first application was made 15 days after seedlings were transplanted. In total, three applications were made at 15-day intervals. The pots that constituted the control treatment received water in the same amount. After the final application, the plants were subjected to analyses of gas exchange, anatomical changes, and ultrastructural characteristics. The use of silicon...

Costa,Gustavo A.; Santos,Leonardo D. T.; Ferreira,Guilherme A. de P.; Cruz,Leandro R. da; Machado,Vitor D.; Rocha,Leonardo M..
ABSTRACT Variations in environmental conditions, such as the availability of light, can affect the efficacy of herbicides because they alter the biological characteristics of plants including those that are related to the plant’s sensitivity to herbicides. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to assess the influence of environments with different light availabilities, and of the application of glyphosate and carfentrazone-ethyl (separately or in combination) on the morphophysiology and control of Macroptilium atropurpureum. An experimental design of randomized blocks with five replicates was used, with treatments arranged in a split-plot design. The plots were composed of three levels of shading (full sunlight, 50% shading, and 70% shading);...

Farmers use non-selective herbicides, such as glyphosate, in directed applications to control weeds in coffee crops. Despite the precautions used during the application of herbicides, there are usually reports of poisoning in plantation areas. Moreover, it is fundamental to understand the effects of glyphosate on photosynthetic processes. The present study aimed to evaluate the characteristics associated with the photosynthetic activity in coffee cultivars subjected to doses of glyphosate. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using three varieties of coffee (Coffea arabica), including Acaiá (MG-6851), Catucaí Amarelo (2 SL) and Topázio (MG-1190), and three subdoses of glyphosate (0.0, 115.2 and 460.8 g ha-1) in a 3 x 3 factorial scheme. Herbicide...

Photosynthetic rate of the aquatic macrophyte Egeria densa Planch. (Hydrocharitaceae) in two rivers from the Itanhaém River Basin in São Paulo State, Brazil BABT
Pezzato,Maura Maria; Camargo,Antonio Fernando Monteiro.
Egeria densa is a submerged aquatic macrophyte which, in Brazil, causes problems specially for electric energy generation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the photosynthetic rate of E. densa in two rivers (Aguapeú and Mambu) with different limnological features, both located in the Itanhaém River Basin. This species is abundant in both rivers without causing damages to their multiple uses. Photosynthetic rates were analysed in February, May, August and November 1998 and limnological variables of the water and sediment were also measured. The highest value of gross photosynthesis (GP) was detected in May (10.06 in Aguapeú and 6.10 mgO2/gDW/h in Mambu), when under-water photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) was also high (1,126.7 and 895.8 m...

Changes in growth and photosynthetic capacity of cucumber seedlings in response to nitrate stress Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Yang,Xiaoyu; Wang,Xiufeng; Wei,Min; Hikosaka,Shoko; Goto,Eiji.
The effects of three nitrate levels - 14(CK), 56(T-1), and 140 mmol L-1 (T-2) - on growth and photosynthetic capacity of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Xintaimici) seedlings grown in hydroponic culture were investigated. The results showed that at 12 d after treatment plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, and leaf number of cucumber seedlings were stimulated by 56 mmol L-1 nitrate, whereas were inhibited significantly by 140 mmol L-1 nitrate compared with CK. Short-term stimulation in photosynthetic rate occurred under T-1 treatment, and then recovered to the level of CK. Photosynthetic rate of T-2 seedlings significantly decreased over treatment course with respect to CK. Photosynthetic pigment content of T-1 and T-2 increased during the first 2 d,...

Effect of water availability on physiological performance and lettuce crop yield (Lactuca sativa) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Molina-Montenegro,Marco A; Zurita-Silva,Andrés; Oses,Rómulo.
Water is essential for plants, affecting the majority of the physiological processes related to growth and productivity. Water shortage is one of the most common factors that limit crop productivity worldwide. Many cultivars have elevated water requirements, nevertheless in some countries due to global climate change effects, the availability of water for irrigation is becoming limited. In fact, current models of climate changes predict that central Chile will be a sensitive zone where precipitation will drastically decrease. In this study, the variation of gas exchange and production of fresh biomass in a lettuce cultivar, grown under different water availability regimes, was evaluated. Additionally, the concentration of total soluble sugar and water use...
