Iron is known to limit primary production in the Southern Ocean (SO). To cope with the lack of this micronutrient, diatoms, a dominant phytoplankton group in this oceanic region, have been shown in cultures to have developed an original adaptation strategy to maintain efficient growth rates despite very low cellular iron quotas, even in low light conditions. Using a global ocean biogeochemical model, we explored the consequences of this physiological adaptation for the biological pump and the seasonal variability of both surface chlorophyll concentrations and surface partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO(2)) in this key region for global climate. Out of the deep-sea into a land-based aquarium environment: Investigating innate immunity in the hydrothermal vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus ArchiMer

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are considered as some of the most adverse environments in the world, yet the animals dwelling around the vent sites exhibit high productivity and therefore must cope with unusual levels of heavy metals, pH, temperature, CO2 and sulfide, in addition to environmental microbes. In an attempt to understand the physiological reactions of animals normally set to endure extreme conditions we investigated molecular indicators of acclimation processes during which the mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus was maintained over long periods of time under without methane and/or sulfide supplementation, vent mussels seem to endure well aquarium conditions. Responses and adaptations of collembolan communities (Hexapoda: Collembola) to flooding and hypoxic conditions PAB

Standard ecological methods (pitfall traps, trunk eclectors and soil cores) were used to evaluate collembolan community responses to different flooding intensities. Three sites of a floodplain habitat near Mainz, Germany, with different flooding regimes were investigated. The structures of collembolan communities are markedly different depending on flooding intensity. Sites more affected by flooding are dominated by hygrophilic and hygrotolerant species, whereas the hardwood floodplain is dominated by mesophilic species. The survival strategies of the hygrophilic and hygrotolerant species include egg diapause and passive drifting.
