Uncommon disorders and decay in near-isogenic lines of melon and reference cultivars Horticultura Brasileira
Martínez,Juan Antonio; Jowkar,Mohammad-Madi; Obando-Ulloa,Javier Mauricio; Varó,Plácido; Moreno,Eduard; Monforte,Antonio José; Fernández-Trujillo,Juan Pablo.
Postharvest disorders and rots can produce important economic losses in fruits stored for long time for exportation. The genetic and physiological basis of some disorders in melon (Cucumis melo L.) are unknown and particularly the possible relation with climacteric behavior. A collection of melon near-isogenic lines (NILs) (SC3-5 and seven more showing climacteric and two non-climacteric ripening pattern) were analyzed to study genetic and physiological aspects of fruit disorders and rots. Two non-climacteric (Nicolás; Inodorus Group; and Shongwan Charmi PI161375, Conomon Group) and two climacteric cultivars (Fado, Reticulatus Group; Védrantais, Cantaloupensis Group) were used as reference. The field was divided in eight blocks containing one three-plant...

Weber,Anderson; Brackmann,Auri; Anese,Rogério de Olivera; Both,Vanderlei; Pavanello,Elizandra Pivotto.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the interaction of ultralow oxygen concentrations (ULO) with storage temperatures and carbon dioxide partial pressures and its influence on fruit quality preservation and on the occurrence of physiological disorders in 'Royal Gala' apples. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, with four replicates 25-fruit. ULO conditions (1.0 kPa O2 + 2.0 kPa CO2; 0.8 kPa O2 + 1.5 kPa CO2; 0.8 kPa O2 + 1.0 kPa CO2; 0.6 kPa O2 + 1.5 kPa CO2; and 0.6 kPa O2 + 1.0 kPa CO2) were tested at 0, 0.5 and 1.0°C, in a 5x3 factorial arrangement. Fruit quality and ripening analyses were performed after eight-month storage plus seven days of shelf-life at 20°C. Oxygen partial pressures below 0.8 kPa increased the...

Yield and fruit quality of apple from conventional and organic production systems PAB
Amarante,Cassandro Vidal Talamini do; Steffens,Cristiano André; Mafra,Álvaro Luiz; Albuquerque,Jackson Adriano.
The objective of this study was to assess the yield and fruit quality of apple produced with a conventional and an organic production systems in Southern Brazil. The orchards consisted of alternate rows from 10 to 12-year old 'Royal Gala' and 'Fuji' apple trees on M.7 rootstocks, grown as slender spindles, on 4x6 m spacing. Eighteen apple trees of each cultivar and management system were randomly selected and assessed for nutrition, flowering, fruit set, yield, and fruit quality during two growing seasons (2002/2003 and 2003/2004). The organic management system resulted in lower concentrations of K, Mg, and N in leaves and fruits, and in smaller fruits for both cultivars, and lower fruit yield for 'Fuji' than from the conventional production system. For...

Respiratory quotient: innovative method for monitoring ‘Royal Gala’ apple storage in a dynamic controlled atmosphere Scientia Agricola
Weber,Anderson; Brackmann,Auri; Both,Vanderlei; Pavanello,Elizandra Pivotto; Anese,Rogério de Oliveira; Thewes,Fabio Rodrigo.
Apples (Malus domestica, Borkh.) which are not stored at low temperature or in a properly controlled atmosphere (CA) may have a high metabolic rate during the postharvest stage resulting in losses in quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of ‘Royal Gala’ apple fruit stored in accordance with a new method of dynamic controlled atmosphere (DCA).The respiratory quotient (RQ) was monitored at two temperatures which were then compared using a commercially available technology based on chlorophyll fluorescence DCA (DCA-CF) and static CA. Ethylene production and respiration rates were lower in apples stored in DCA than in CA, as a result of lower 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase activity, especially in apples stored in DCA-RQ2. Flesh...

Berghetti,Magno Roberto Pasquetti; Brackmann,Auri; Thewes,Fabio Rodrigo; Schultz,Erani Eliseu; Ludwig,Vagner; Wendt,Lucas Mallmann; Thewes,Flavio Roberto; Schmidt,Suele Fernanda Prediger.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of storing ‘Royal Gala’ apple under extremely low oxygen partial pressures on their anaerobic metabolism, ethylene production and fruit quality after 9 months of storage plus 7 days of shelf life at 20 °C. The storage conditions tested were: 1.2 kPa O2 + 2.0 kPa CO2; 0.7 kPa O2 + 1.5 kPa CO2; 0.5 kPa O2 + 1.2 kPa CO2; 0.4 kPa O2 +1.2 kPa CO2 and 0.25 kPa O2 + 0.0 kPa CO2. The fruit storage temperature was 1.0 °C (± 0.1). Fruit stored at 0.4 kPa O2 + 1.2 kPa CO2 maintained higher flesh firmness and a higher percentage of healthy fruit. The fruit stored under the 0.25 kPa O2 + 0.0 kPa CO2 condition had lower flesh firmness as well as a reduced percentage of healthy fruit and a high production of...

Pinto,Josuel Alfredo Vilela; Schorr,Márcio Renan Weber; Thewes,Fabio Rodrigo; Ceconi,Deiverson Luiz; Both,Vanderlei; Brackmann,Auri; Fronza,Diniz.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different levels of relative humidity (RH) on the maintenance of Postharvest quality of 'Niagara Rosada' table grapes after cold storage at 0.5°C for 21 days. A completely randomized design was used, with five replicates of 18 clusters per treatment. The selected levels of relative humidity were 85, 90, 95 and 100%, obtained by means of electronic humidity controllers. The fruits were evaluated in relation to rot incidence, berry cracking, browning rate, respiratory rate, titratable acidity, soluble solids, resistance to abscission, berry drop and weight loss. The evaluations were assessed at 20 days of storage and after two and four days of shelf-life (20°C; 85% RH). The results showed that as higher as relative...

Chlorophyll fluorescence as a predictive method for detection of browning disorders in 'Conference' pears and 'Jonagold' apples during controlled atmosphere storage Ciência Rural
Saquet,Adriano Arriel; Streif,Josef.
The chlorophyll fluorescence technique was evaluated as a possible predictive and nondestructive method to detect low-O2 and/or high-CO2 injuries in 'Conference' pears and 'Jonagold' apples stored in controlled atmosphere (CA). The fruits were kept at 0°C in air, 1% CO2 + 2% O2 or 3% CO2 + 1% O2 during five months. Fluorescence parameters of minimal fluorescence (Fo), maximal fluorescence (Fm), and potential quantum yield - (Fm-Fo):Fm, also denoted as Fv:Fm- as well as the incidence of browning disorders were evaluated at several times during storage. No incidence of browning disorders was observed in 'Jonagold' apples, however, they showed a decrease in Fv:Fm during storage time with no differences between the CA-conditions. Air-stored apples showed a...
