EFFECT OF AUDITORY ENRICHMENT (MUSIC) IN PREGNANT SOWS WELFARE REA
Silva,Flávia R. S.; Miranda,Késia O. da S.; Piedade,Sônia M. de S.; Salgado,Douglas D'Alessandro.
ABSTRACT Studies have shown that the benefits from music can improve the welfare conditions of laboratory, pet and production animals. The study aimed to evaluate the influence of music (Antonio Lucio Vivaldi compositions) on behavior aspects (position, activity, stereotypes, social and agonistic behavior) and physiological responses (respiratory rate and rectal temperature) in gestating sows in individual cages (stage 1), and collective stalls (stage 2). 28 animals were studied, 14 belonged to music group, and 14 to the control group (without music). The respiratory rate had the lowest averages in the group with music, for example, in stage 1, time 1, values of 19.28 and 21.50 mov.min−1. In stage 2, the values found in the same time were 20.36 and 24.16,...

Toxicity of Epoxiconazole to the Marine Diatom Chaetoceros calcitrans: Influence of Growth Conditions and Algal Development Stage ArchiMer
Amara, Anis; Quiniou, Francoise; Durand, Gael; El Bour, Monia; Boudabous, Abdellatif; Hourmant, Annick.
The triazole fungicide epoxiconazole is extensively used to control fungi on crops and may present some potential risk from runoff on coastal ecosystems located close to agricultural areas. Phytotoxicity assessments were conducted on the marine diatom Chaetoceros calcitrans using both the active ingredient and its formulated product (Opus). The 3-day EC50 using cell count was 2.31 mg/L for epoxiconazole active ingredient and 2.9 mu g/L for epoxiconazole-formulated. The fungicide produced an increase of cellular volume, pigment (chlorophylls a, c, and carotenoids) content, ATP synthesis, and rates of photosynthesis and respiration. Progressive algal cell recovery from epoxiconazole effects occurred after 3 days, with the increasing cell density. Differences...

Latex production with depolymerizing compounds of actin cytoskeleton in rubber trees PAB
Zheng-Quan,Gao; Chun-Xiao,Meng; Nai-Hao,Ye.
The objective of this work was to assess stimulated latex flow from rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis) with saturated macrolide (latrunculin A), 1, 5, and 10% potassium iodide in 2% methylcellulose compared with 0.3% ethylene in 2% methylcellulose (check) and 2% methylcellulose (blank). Latex output and contents of pure rubber, total solid, sucrose, inorganic phosphorus, thiol, and Mg2+ were measured. The treatments containing 1% KI or saturated macrolide increased latex yields compared to the blank with 2% methylcellulose alone. The 1% KI or saturated macrolide treatments were equal to that of 0.3% ethylene check treatment. However, 5 and 10% KI were harmful to bark of rubber trees, even caused prolonged tapping panel dryness.

Performance of free-range chickens reared in production modules enriched with shade net and perches Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Santos,MJB; Pandorfi,H; Rabello,CBV; Silva,EP; Torres,TR; Santos,PA; Morril,WB; Duarte,NM.
An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of environmental enrichment in a free-range chicken production system on live performance as a function of microclimate, physiological parameters, and performance parameters. Four production modules were divided into four pens with 10 birds each, totaling 60 birds. The following treatments were applied: access to a paddock (TEST), access to a paddock with perches (PER), access to a paddock with artificial shade (SHA), and access to the paddock with perches and artificial shade (PESH). The PESH production module presented the best globe temperature (Tbg,ºC) and enthalpy (h, kJ/kg), and thereby, the best thermal environmental conditions, which ensured the longest permanence time of the birds in the...

This work was carried out to evaluate the physiological thermoregulation responses of Girolando-breed dairy cows kept in feedlot during summertime. A total of 15 animals were used, belonging to three genetic groups: 1/2, 5/8 and 3/4 Holstein-Gir (HG), with five cows from each genetic group, distributed in a completely randomized design, in subplots. The physiological parameters were sweat rate (SR), respiratory rate (RR), epidermis temperature (ET) and coat surface temperature (CST), and were evaluated once a week, during nine weeks, from December 2009 to February 2010, totaling 135 observations. Throughout the experimental period, climatic data were recorded using an automated weather station, and later used to calculate the different thermal comfort...

Monitoring of physiological and blood parameters during perinatal and neonatal period in calves Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Piccione,G.; Casella,S.; Pennisi,P.; Giannetto,C.; Costa,A.; Caola,G..
Rectal temperature, heart and respiratory rates, and the course of some blood parameters were monitored in calves during perinatal and neonatal periods. The study was carried out on eight Limousine calves. From all subjects, rectal temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate were measured. Blood samples were taken at the same hour (9am) from the external jugular vein, and then centrifuged and stored until analyses. By means of an UV spectrophotometer, the following blood parameters were assessed for each subject: total protein, total cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), urea, creatinine, cholinesterase, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), hydroxybutirate, glutamate pyruvate transaminases (GPT), glutamate oxalacetate...

Nitrogenous metabolism in Thoroughbred and Arabian foals from birth to five months of age Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Piccione,G.; Costa,A.; Fazio,F.; Grasso,F.; Caola,G..
The maturation of nitrogen metabolism was studied in six Thoroughbred and six Arabian foals. Rectal temperature, heart and respiratory rates and serum concentration of several hematochemical parameters (total protein, urea, uric acid, creatinine, and albumine) were monitored from birth to 5 months of age. In both breeds, all the parameters except albumine showed significant differences over time (P<0.05). The two breeds did not differ from each other at any time point. Statistically significant decreases in urea and creatinine concentrations were related to the growth needs of foals during this critical period of development.

Influence of light intensity on growth and physiological characteristics of common sage (Salvia officinalis L.) BABT
Zervoudakis,George; Salahas,George; Kaspiris,George; Konstantopoulou,Eleni.
The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of four different light intensities on the growth characteristics, physiological parameters and leaf photosynthetic pigments of Salvia officinalis L. The plant's dry mass, number of the leaves and physiological parameters indicated a strong positive correlation with the light intensity. On the other hand, the plant's height and leaf photosynthetic pigments were increased at low light treated plants. These results suggest that the aromatic herb Salvia officinalis L. is adaptable to different light environments.

Effects of elevated air temperature on physiological characteristics of flag leaves and grain yield in rice Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Qi-Hua,Liu; Xiu,Wu; Tian,Li; Jia-Qing,Ma; Xue-Biao,Zhou.
As an indispensable environment element for crop growth, air temperature has brought challenge for the sustainable development of rice (Oryza sativa L.) production. Elevated air temperature led to great loss in rice grain yield in many districts suffering from heat stress due to the greenhouse effect worldwide, which has received more and more attention from researchers. A field experiment was conducted to investigate impacts of high air temperature (HAT) after rice heading stage on dynamics of SPAD values, soluble sugar, soluble protein, and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents of flag leaves, and grain yield attributes. The results showed that HAT significantly reduced SPAD values, soluble sugar and protein contents, seed-setting rate, number of filled grains...
