Optimization of callus and cell suspension cultures of Barringtonia racemosa (Lecythidaceae family) for lycopene production Scientia Agricola
Behbahani,Mandana; Shanehsazzadeh,Mehrnaz; Hessami,Mohamad Javad.
Lycopene is present in a range of fresh fruits and vegetables, especially in the leaves of Barringtonia racemosa. The traditional lycopene extraction from the plant is being employed instead of an easy propagation technique like cell culture process from the leaf explants. We intend to assess how lycopene could be extracted via tissue culture under light (illuminance: 8,200 lux under white fluorescent lamps, photoperiod 16 h per day at 25ºC) and dark. Leaf explants of Barringtonia racemosa were cultured on modified Murashige and Skoog (MS), Woody Plant Medium (WPM) and B5 media, supplemented with different concentrations of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Optimal conditions for callus induction and maintenance under both dark and light were...

BARROS,BÁRBARA R.S.; BARBOZA,BRUNO RAFAEL; RAMOS,BÁRBARA A.; MOURA,MAIARA C. DE; COELHO,LUANA C.B.B.; NAPOLEÃO,THIAGO HENRIQUE; CORREIA,MARIA TEREZA S.; PAIVA,PATRÍCIA MARIA G.; CRUZ FILHO,IRANILDO JOSÉ DA; SILVA,TÚLIO DIEGO DA; LIMA,CLÁUDIA S.A.; MELO,CRISTIANE M.L. DE.
Abstract: Currently, the research of new natural compounds with biological potential demonstrates great ethnopharmacological importance. In this study, we evaluated the biological properties promoted by saline extract from Malpighia emarginata DC leaves, whose objective is to evaluate the antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxicity potential. Phytochemical characterization was performed by UPLC-MS chromatography to identify the chemical compounds. For the antioxidant potential, DPPH, ATT and FRAP methods were used. The antibacterial and antifungal tests were performed evaluating the MIC50, MIC90, CMB and CMF parameters. Moreover, antibiofilm action was evaluated. Cytotoxicity and proliferation were performed using splenocytes from Balb/c mice and were...

Morpho-anatomy and ontogeny of the underground system of Chrysolaena simplex (Less.) Dematt. (Asteraceae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Santos,Vanessa S.; Souza,Vinicius P.; Vilhalva,Divina A.A.; Ferreira,Fernanda P.S.; Paula,José R.; Rezende,Maria Helena.
The occurrence of thickened underground systems in Asteraceae is widely reported in the literature. Given the great complexity of underground systems, which may originate from roots, stems, or both, morpho-anatomical analyses are essential to ensure the use of correct terminology. The goals of this study were to describe the morpho-anatomy and ontogeny, investigate the occurrence of secondary metabolites and evaluate the effects of seasonality on the underground system of Chrysolaena simplex (Less.) Dematt. Samples were studied using standard protocols of plant anatomy, scanning electron microscopy, histochemical and phytochemical. The underground system of C. simplex was categorised as a rhizophore which started from cotyledonary node. In adult...

Exploring the Anticancer Activity of Grape Seed Extract on Skin Cancer Cell Lines A431 BABT
Mohansrinivasan,V.; Devi C.,Subathra; Deori,Meenakshi; Biswas,Ananya; Naine S,Jemimah.
In this study, grape seeds were extracted using ethyl acetate and petroleum ether by solvent-solvent extraction method. The phytochemical tests were performed to identify different phytochemical compounds present in the grape seed extract (GSE). Antibacterial activity of the GSE was determined using agar diffusion method against Gram- positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis was done to identify the presence of bioactive compounds and their functional groups. The GC-MS results revealed a total of four compounds, known to have potent activity against cancer cells, viz, squalene, the most potent compound found in ethyl acetate extract and diethyl phthalate,...

Phytochemical and antifungal activity of anthraquinones and root and leaf extracts of Coccoloba mollis on phytopathogens BABT
Barros,Iuri Bezerra de; Daniel,Juliana Feijó de Souza; Pinto,Jurandir Pereira; Rezende,Maria Inês; Braz Filho,Raimundo; Ferreira,Dalva Trevisan.
The aim of this work was to study the phytochemical and antifungal activity of anthraquinones and root and leaf extracts of Coccoloba mollis on phytopathogens. The chemical analysis of ethanolic extracts showed a mixture of long-chain hydrocarbons, carboxyl esters and 3-taraxerone in the leaf extract. Two anthraquinones (emodin and physcion) were isolated and identified from the root extract. Phytochemical screening using the pharmacognostic methods revealed the presence of flavonoids and tannins in the leaves and roots. Anthraquinones were only found in the root extract, no alkaloids, coumarins, saponins and simple phenolics were present. The antifungal activity of C. mollis extracts and anthraquinones isolated from the root of this plant against...

Investigations of Acacia modesta Wall. leaves for in vitro anti-diabetic, proliferative and cytotoxic effects BJPS
Saleem,Bushra; Islam,Muhammad; Saeed,Hamid; Imtiaz,Fariha; Asghar,Maryam; Saleem,Zikria; Mehmood,Azra; Naheed,Surriya.
ABSTRACT The leaves of Acacia modesta Wall. have been shown to possess diverse pharmacological properties. Therefore, we aimed at evaluating anti-diabetic, cytotoxic and proliferative effects of extracts of Acacia modesta Wall. leaves. After evaluating the primary and secondary metabolites, anti-diabetic activity of various extracts was assessed by α-amylase inhibition, glucose uptake by yeast cells and non-enzymatic glycosylation of hemoglobin assay. Cytotoxicity and proliferative potential was assessed by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) and short term proliferation assays, respectively, using human liver carcinoma cell line, HepG2. Among other extracts, chloroform extract exhibited 34.16% inhibition of α-amylase, 90.65%...
