ABSTRACT Solidago chilensis Meyen, belonging to the family Asteraceae, is a plant native to South America and the only representative of the genus in Brazil. This species is popularly known as “arnica” and is used to treat bruises, muscle pain and inflammation. The objective of this work was to contribute to the pharmacognostic standardization of S. chilensis. Cross-sections were obtained, by freehand, for microscopic analysis of root, stem and leaf; for these parts of the plant maceration was also performed according to the method of Jeffrey. For the leaf were still made paradermal sections, scanning electron microscopy analysis, phytochemical and histochemical tests. Thus, it was determined anatomical features useful for diagnosis of the species which,... |

Psychotria fractistipula L.B.Sm, R.M. Klein & Delprete (Rubiaceae) is found in the existing Atlantic Forest in the South of Brazil, in the Paraná and Santa Catarina States. The members of Rubiaceae are characterized chemically by the presence of alkaloids, some pharmacological properties of which include antifungal, antibacterial, analgesic, antioxidant, antimutagenic, and antiviral activities. In this study, we report the results of anatomical, morphological, and histochemical analyses of the leaves and stems of the Rubiaceae family member, P. fractistipula. The anatomical analysis involved of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Morpho-anatomical and histochemical characterization were made using standard methodology. The isolated... |

γ-oryzanol, a phytochemical, has antioxidant activities and potential health benefits. In this study, we aimed to develop a method for extracting high amounts of γ-oryzanol from rice bran and for verifying its stability in different solvents. Of the 5 methods under investigation, the one that yielded the highest γ-oryzanol content was further improved by using a central composite rotational design (DCCR - 2(4), including 8 tests in axial conditions and 4 central points, totaling 28 trials). The parameters under study were temperature, time, volume, and the ratio of hexane:isopropanol. High γ-oryzanol content (13.98 mg.g-1) was obtained by using the following extraction conditions: 40° C, 40 min, and 75 mL hexane:isopropanol (1:3). The limits of detection... |

ABSTRACT Catharanthus roseus(L.) G. Don is a medicinal plant known for its important constituent aromatic compounds. In the literature, no detailed studies elucidating the methods of extraction of phenolic compounds for this species are available. Therefore, the present study was aimed at evaluating the maceration parameters for determining the total phenols content in C. roseus. The parameters of plant mass, extraction phase composition, homogenization type, extraction time, and temperature were evaluated in terms of improving the extraction conditions. The plant extracts were subjected to specific spectrophotometric analysis designed for each parameter, and the total phenols content was determined. After establishing the optimal conditions, the extracts... |

Asteraceae weeds are rich in chemicals that have biological and pharmaceutical activities. The aims of this work were to describe the phytochemistry and quantify the polyphenols in ethanol extracts from leaves of 12 species of Asteraceae weeds collected in Diamantina, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The screening of Asteraceae extracts revealed the presence of tannins, steroids, triterpenes, anthocyanins, and flavonoids. The total phenolic content was high in extracts of Lychnophora ericoides (147.97 ± 2.66), Lepidaploa lilacina (141.11 ± 1.99), and Eremanthus elaeagnus (134.61 ± 7.81) and low in extracts of Lychnophora ramosissima (32.65 ± 0.70), and Lychnophora sp. (54.03 ± 0.73). Extracts of Asteraceae weeds from Diamantina could have potential for... |
