Potential effects of mechanically removing macrophytes on the phytoplankton community of a subtropical reservoir Acta Botanica
Wojciechowski,Juliana; Burda,Tamires Marcela; Scheer,Mauricio Bergamini; Costa,Elaine Aparecida Dias da; Fernandes,Luciano Felício.
ABSTRACT Intensive growth of aquatic macrophytes interferes with water quality and ecosystem dynamics worldwide. Although mechanically removing macrophytes is the most commonly used method for their eradication, it can also cause undesirable disturbances in aquatic reservoir communities. We performed laboratory incubations of phytoplankton sampled before and after macrophytes were mechanically removed from the Piraquara II reservoir, South Brazil. We analyzed changes in growth and composition of the main phytoplankton groups with respect to nutrient shifting. Prior to removing the macrophytes, the phytoplankton community was dominated by low cell abundances of diatoms and flagellates. In contrast, growth rates of cyanobacteria (mainly Cylindrospermopsis...

Relationship between phytoplankton structure and environmental variables in tropical reservoirs with different trophic states Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Simone Alves de; Ferragut,Carla; Bicudo,Carlos Eduardo de Mattos.
ABSTRACT Phytoplankton structure is influenced by environmental factors, seasonal cycles and the trophic state of the system. The objective of the present study was to identify guilds of phytoplankton species that are representative of seasonality and trophic status. We evaluated phytoplankton biomass and species composition in five tropical reservoirs, with different trophic states and during rainy and dry periods. At most of the sampling sites, total biomass was higher during the rainy season. Moreover, high cyanobacterial biomass was observed in all reservoirs except for one of the mesotrophic reservoirs, which had no significant contribution from the group. Phytoplankton guilds associated with the trophic gradient and seasonality were identified....

Scientometrical review of Dinoflagellate studies in Brazil Acta Botanica
Noga,Pietro Martins Barbosa; Gomes,Doriedson Ferreira.
ABSTRACT Scientific production in developing countries is currently increasing, but there is still an unbalanced distribution of scientific production between developed and developing countries. With the need to elucidate disparities in scientific production, this paper aims to review publications on dinoflagellates in Brazil by discussing spatial and temporal trends. A search for papers referring to dinoflagellates was performed in the Scopus database up to the year of 2016. A total of 125 papers were found, but only 106 were selected according to established criteria. A linear regression was used to evaluate the increasing temporal trend in production and non-parametric ANOVA for comparisons among study categories. Dinoflagellate and toxic taxa-based...

Considerations regarding the dominance of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii under low light availability in a low phosphorus lake Acta Botanica
Tonetta,Denise; Hennemann,Mariana Coutinho; Brentano,Débora Monteiro; Petrucio,Mauricio Mello.
ABSTRACTAlthough many studies have shown that the dispersion, increased abundance and dominance of cyanobacteria can be attributed to nutrient enrichment, we discuss features contributing to the dominance of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii in a shallow, polymictic, subtropical coastal lake with low phosphorus and light limitation (Peri Lake). The presence and dominance of C. raciborskii in an environment with such characteristics emphasizes the idea that nutrients alone do not explain the high density of this cyanobacterium. Other features should be considered in explaining this species dominance, such as phosphorus storage and physiological flexibilitywhich seem to be key features to high densities in low phosphorus systems.

The necessity of management in a lake of the Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot: nitrogen levels connected to a persistent bloom of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii Acta Botanica
Figueredo,Cleber Cunha; Rückert,Gabriela von; Giani,Alessandra.
ABSTRACT Conservational studies of the threatened Atlantic Forest biome are frequently restricted to terrestrial ecosystems. We know little about the water bodies, specially considering that this biome covers the third largest system of lakes in Brazil. Some of these lakes are located inside the protected "Rio Doce State Park", but many others are found outside this reserve. These external lakes are seldom studied, but understanding their response to human activities is essential for the conservation and the protection of the lakes inside the Park. We evaluated the effects of degradation in a lake outside the Park, which shows a constant bloom of the toxic invasive cyanobacteria Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii. Phytoplankton, climate and physico-chemical...

A note on the seasonally shifting zone of high primary production in the Bay of Marajó, Pará, Brazil, 1983-1984 Acta Botanica
Schwassmann,H.O; Barthem,R.B; Carvalho,M.L.
To understand the hydrological and limnological conditions during the annual regime of high and low river flow, as well as the action of the tides, a series of 18 collecting trips were conducted in monthly and bimonthly intervals across the Bay of Marajó during the years 1983-1985. The Tocantins River provides more than 80% of the inflow into this bay and shows a much greater difference in water volume flow between high and low water season than the Amazon. The annual displacement of brackish water influence is thus more extensive Marajó Bay than in the Amazon estuary. During the dry season of low river discharge (September-December), traces of seawater are found to penetrate up to 90 km upriver in the Guamá River. The high degree of turbidity of inner...

Sodium and nitrate favor the steady state of cyanobacteria in a semiarid ecosystem Biological Sciences
Oliviera, Fábio Henrique Portella Corrêa de; Dantas, Ênio Wocyli.
This study characterized steady state events (SS) in a semiarid reservoir (Brazil) dominated by cyanobacteria for 130 weeks, and evaluated the influence of different abiotic variables on their occurrence. It was hypothesized that, in semiarid reservoirs, steady state events are independent from seasonality and influenced by high nutrient concentrations, and steady state periods show low variation of species. Our data revealed the occurrence of SS events in both the dry and wet seasons. Higher concentrations of nitrate and sodium together with higher values of color favored the development of SS. Species composing the SS dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa (Kützing) Kützing was correlated with higher sulfate concentrations, while higher values of turbidity...

Plankton diversity and limnological characterization in two shallow tropical urban reservoirs of Pernambuco State, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Almeida,Viviane L.S.; Melão,Maria da Graça G.; Moura,Ariadne N..
Plankton diversity, physical and chemical variables and chlorophyll a were analyzed in two shallow urban reservoirs with different trophic degrees on Pernambuco State, northeastern Brazil. High eutrophication levels were observed in Apipucos reservoir, while Prata reservoir was considered oligotrophic. Values reported for physical and chemical variables and chlorophyll a differed among the studied ecosystems. Richness and plankton diversity were higher in Apipucos reservoir especially for phytoplankton. The presence of potential toxic Cyanophyceae in both reservoirs reflects a problem mainly to Prata reservoir, which is used for public water supply. Differences were observed for some variables among sites of study in Apipucos reservoir, while the...

The composition and new records of micro- and mesophytoplankton near the Vitória-Trindade Seamount Chain Biota Neotropica
Lubiana,Karoline Magalhães Ferreira; Dias Júnior,Camilo.
Abstract In spite of the length of the Brazilian coastline, studies of marine phytoplankton species in offshore areas have been largely neglected. Regarding phytoplankton species composition, the aim was to assess biodiversity status, species frequency, and the similarities at different sites along the Vitoria-Trindade Seamount Chain. Phytoplankton net samples were analyzed. One hundred and seventy five infrageneric taxa were identified. They represented four phyla, viz., Cyanobacteria, Bacillariophyta, Dinophyta, and Ochrophyta. Dinophyta was the most diverse, and its genus Tripos the largest contributor. This genus also represented more than half of the most common taxa in the sampled area. Thirty-five new infrageneric taxa were recorded, 12 of which are...

Identification of phytoplankton blooms in the Gerlache Strait, West Antarctic Peninsula Boletín de Investigaciones
Cañón Páez,Mary Luz; Santamaría del Ángel,Eduardo.
ABSTRACT In order to identify phytoplankton blooms, the inherent optical properties index (IOPIndex) was used in surface water samples and the maximum chlorophyll-a (MPC) that were taken in the Third (January 2017) and in the Fourth Expedition (January 2018) from Colombia to Antarctica in the Gerlache Strait (EG). The IOPIndex is calculated from the standardized spatial anomalies of the phytoplankton, detritus and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption coefficients using wavelength 443. In addition, the phytoplankton size index was calculated using the Blue / Red ratio and this related to the IOPIndex to determine the size structure of the phytoplankton responsible for the blooms. In 2017, four stations were identified under bloom conditions,...

Impacts of the construction of the Port of Suape on phytoplankton in the Ipojuca River estuary (Pernambuco-Brazil) BABT
Koening,Maria Luise; Leça,Enide Eskinazi; Neumann-Leitão,Sigrid; Macêdo,Silvio José de.
In order to address the impact on phytoplankton, sampling was conducted monthly at 4 fixed stations, from April/86 to March/87 at diurnal low and high tide using a plankton net (65 mum mesh size) and a 1 L Van Dorn bottle. Among the 133 taxa identified, marine littoral euryhaline species were most common, outranking Gyrosigma balticum (Ehrenberg) Rabenhorst, Nitzschia sigma (Kützing) Wm. Smith, Licmophora abbreviata Agardh, Climacosphenia moniligera Ehrenberg, Surirella febigerii Lewis, Terpsinoe musica Ehrenberg and Cylindrotheca closterium (Ehrenberg) Reiman and Lewis. The port construction caused significant changes to the phytoplankton community with a strong influence of marine species (mainly dinoflagellate) because of the opening of the reef near...

The influence of hydrodynamics on the spatial and temporal variation of phytoplankton pigments in a large, sub-tropical coastal lake (Brazil) BABT
Cardoso,Luciana de Souza; Marques,David da Motta.
This study evaluated the spatial and temporal distribution of phytoplankton pigments in Itapeva Lake and its relationship with hydrodynamic aspects. Regarding spatial distribution, a decreasing N®S gradient was generally observed for the pigments, except in summer. This inversion observed during the summer was influenced by the predominant fetch (N-E). The horizontal heterogeneity was proved (ANOVA) for all seasons of the year, except spring. Spatially in spring, the vertical variance was much more significant (p<0.05) than the horizontal one. The sampling shifts presented a permanent degree of variability among the seasons of the year, showing the existence of a diurnal cycle in the concentration of chlorophyll a. This behavior was related to the...

Offshore distribution patterns of the cyanobacterium Trichodesmium erythraeum ehrenberg and associated phyto- and bacterioplankton in the southern Atlantic coast (Paraná, Brazil) BABT
Siqueira,Adriana; Kolm,Hedda Elisabeth; Brandini,Frederico Pereira.
Studies were carried out on Thrichodesmium erythraeum occurring on the inner shelf in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Temperature, salinity, rainfall, wind velocity, total bacteria, bacterial biomass, chlorophyll-a, phytoplankton, Anabaena sp., Merismopedia sp. and T. erythraeum densities were measured in surface water. Centric and pennate diatoms, Anabaena sp. and Merismopedia sp. were most abundant at 15 m isobath, while dinoflagellate abundance was relatively constant among stations. Similarly, total bacterial densities were relatively homogeneous throughout the sampling area, suggesting that blooms of T. erythraeum were not yet in the senescent phase. Results showed that T. erythraeum was capable of surviving in relatively inhospitable environmental...
