Diet composition and food overlap of Acestrorhynchus britskii and A. lacustris (Characiformes: Acestrorhynchidae) from Sobradinho reservoir, São Francisco river, Bahia State - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i4.7240 Biological Sciences

Fish diet studies contribute to understanding resource partitioning and community trophic structure. The present paper characterizes the diet of “peixe-cachorro” species Acestrorhynchus britskii and A. lacustris in Sobradinho reservoir, Bahia State, Brazil. Bimonthly samples (November 2006 to July 2008) were taken in the lotic, transition and lentic stretches of the reservoir, using gillnets overnight. A total of 899 A. britskii and 476 A. lacustris stomachs were analyzed, 70% of which were empty. Their content indicated the species are predominantly piscivorous, with 18 prey fish species identified. However, each prey occurred in a single month, except for Anchoviella vaillanti, recorded in 80% of months for A. bristski, and Tetragonopterus chalceus in...

Size-related and seasonal changes in the diet of the non-native Cichla kelberi Kullander & Ferreira, 2006 in a lowland reservoir in the southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Mendonça,Helaine Silva; Santos,Alexandre Clistenes Alcântara; Martins,Mariana Marques; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
Abstract: We examined size-related and seasonal changes in the diet of the peacock bass Cichla kelberi in a tropical lowland reservoir in southeastern Brazil over three hydro-climatic seasons: summer (high rainfall and temperature), winter (low rainfall and temperature), and late spring (increasing rainfall and temperature) during two years (2006-2007). The tested hypothesis is that this non-native predator fish changes diet during the subadult and adult phases and among seasons to adapt in new colonized environment. Fishes of the families Clupeidae (Platanichthys platana), Characidae (Astyanax spp.) and Cichlidae (Cichla kelberi) were the most important food items, followed by insects of the order Odonata. Cannibalism was also recorded for the largest...

“Swallowing it all” – Extreme ingestion capability of juvenile reef fish Biota Neotropica
Pereira,Pedro Henrique Cipresso.
During a predation event a juvenile grouper, rock hind Epinephelus adscensionis, fed upon the redlip blenny Ophioblennius trinitatis. It is important to highlight that both individuals had pretty much the same size during the predation event (around 5 cm); however, the grouper ingested the whole prey.

Habitat complexity does not influence prey consumption in an experimental three-level trophic chain Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Granzotti,Rafaela V.; Muniz,Carolina M.; Gomes,Luiz C..
ABSTRACT Habitat complexity influences species diversity and regulates trophic interactions, mostly by increasing resource partitioning within habitats and providing refuge for prey. The influence of habitat complexity on more than two trophic levels is not well understood, mainly because behavioral modifications of prey and predator may influence the outcome of trophic interactions. Thus, we conducted a two-factor experiment with a three-level trophic chain: a piscivorous fish [Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (Spix & Agassiz 1829)], an invertivorous fish (Moenkhausia forestii Benine, Mariguela & C. de Oliveira, 2009) and an aquatic macroinvertebrate (Chironomidae larvae). We measured prey consumption in low, intermediate and high habitat complexity,...

Feeding ecology of electric eel Electrophorus varii (Gymnotiformes: Gymnotidae) in the Curiaú River Basin, Eastern Amazon Neotropical Ichthyology
Mendes-Júnior,Raimundo Nonato Gomes; Sá-Oliveira,Júlio César; Vasconcelos,Huann Carllo Gentil; Costa-Campos,Carlos Eduardo; Araújo,Andrea Soares.
ABSTRACT In this study, the composition of the diet and the feeding activity of Electrophorus varii were evaluated. The influence of ontogeny and seasonality in these feeding parameters was also examined. Fish were collected in the Curiaú River Basin, Amazon, Brazil, from March 2005 to February 2006, during the rainy (January-June) and dry (July-December) seasons. Diet composition was characterized based on the analysis of stomach contents and feeding dynamics was assessed based on the Stomach Fullness Index (IR) calculated using stomach weight. Stomach content and RI data were grouped into four-cm size classes (40-80, 80-120, 120-160, and 160-200) and two seasonal periods (rainy and dry). The influence of ontogeny and seasonality in the diet was...

Effects of river damming in Neotropical piscivorous and omnivorous fish: feeding, body condition and abundances Neotropical Ichthyology
Pereira,Larissa Strictar; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio; Delariva,Rosilene Luciana.
ABSTRACT The increase in abundance of small-sized fishes is common after a reservoir is formed. There is an increase in the consumption of fish, from typically piscivorous fish to opportunistic species that take advantage of abundant resources. This study aims to evaluate the effects of diet changes induced by damming on the feeding activity and condition factor of typically piscivorous (Hoplias aff. malabaricus and Oligosarcus longirostris ) and opportunistic (Astyanax lacustris (ex Astyanax altiparanae ) and Pimelodus britskii ). Sampling was conducted before and after the impoundment in the Iguaçu River in the region of Salto Caxias, Paraná State, Brazil. Stomach contents were analysed by the volumetric method. Feeding activity and body condition were...

Feeding ecology of the leaf fish Monocirrhus polyacanthus (Perciformes: Polycentridae) in a terra firme stream in the Brazilian Amazon Neotropical Ichthyology
Catarino,Michel F; Zuanon,Jansen.
Monocirrhus polyacanthus (Polycentridae) is a remarkable leaf-mimicking fish that inhabits streams, lake and river margins along the Amazon basin. Despite its obvious predatory habits and being frequently present in the international aquarium trade, little is known about its diet under natural conditions. We examined 35 specimens of leaf fish (28.5-82.0 mm SL), of which 19 had food the stomach. Thirty-three preys were found in the stomach contents, 19 of which were measured (2.0-33.0 mm total length). Up to five preys were found in the stomach contents of a single leaf fish specimen. The diet of the leaf fish was constituted by fish (63.15% FO, n = 12) and invertebrates (36.3% FO, n = 4); fish and invertebrate preys occurred together in three stomachs...
