| Aurícula complexa (Gregory) Cleve (Auriculaceae, Bacülariophyceae) é assinalada pela primeira vez para as águas costeiras de Pernambuco, NE do Brasil. A espécie foi encontrada em amostras de plancton, coletadas durante o período de março/87 a fevereiro/88, em quatro estações, localizadas em um perfil perpendicular à costa. O trabalho fornece descrição, distribuição na área estudada e dados ecológicos da espécie, que esteve presente em nove das 48 amostras coletadas. Quantitativamente foi pouco representativa, com percentuais que não atingiram mais que 0,5% da população fitoplanctônica total. |

| Los elementos traza, que incluyen a los metales pesados, llegan a los ecosistemas acuáticos desde fuentes naturales y antrópicas. Los metales pesados se encuentran entre los contaminantes ambientales más importantes debido a su toxicidad, permanencia y tendencia a acumularse en los organismos acuáticos, por lo que su estudio es necesario por el riesgo ambiental que representan. El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar los resultados más relevantes en relación a los niveles de metales pesados existentes en diferentes compartimentos de lagos del noroeste de Patagonia. | Observations made during a "La Nina" situation (April-May 1996) in the equatorial Pacific upwelling, between 165 degrees E and 150 degrees W, show the classic deepening of hydrological isolines from east to west, resulting in zonal gradients for surface temperature and macronutrients. However, contrasting with such a gradient, no clear zonal variation could be seen for integrated planktonic biomasses and carbon fluxes, namely: chlorophyll a, bacterial abundances, particulate organic phosphorus, mesozooplankton ash free dry weight, primary production, and the sinking flux of particulate organic carbon (POC). | It is often necessary to sub-sample plankton samples even if the precision of the estimation is thereby decreased. A methodological optimization is looked for. The variance depends on the procedure of construction of the aliquot (strategy) and the number of individuals counted (effort). The sub-sampling effort is allocated in a general context of repartition of the total effort between sampling and sub-sampling.
