Última Growth and survival over ten years of Brazil-nut trees planted in three anthropogenic habitats in northern Amazonia Acta Amazonica SCOLES,Ricardo; GRIBEL,Rogério. ABSTRACT We examined the growth and survival of Brazil-nut trees, Bertholletia excelsa (Lecythidaceae) under different environmental conditions and levels of canopy openness within experimental plantations in the Trombetas River valley, in northern Brazil. We planted 144 seedlings in three anthropogenic habitats with different levels of sunlight exposition: crop field (100% canopy opening), shrub fallow (20-80% canopy opening) and Brazil-nut forest (< 10% canopy opening). We measured plant height and diameter annually and recorded mortality and resprouting over ten years. The restoration of dry lands in the Mediterranean is a challenging task because harsh abiotic conditions hamper the counteraction of feed-back degradation processes. Active restoration through planting must be performed to deter this process. In this study, we tested the influence of mineral nutrition in the nursery (two formulations of controlled release fertilizer at two rates each) and tree protection after planting (by using tube shelters) on the nine-year performance of Acacia salicina irrigated with low-quality (saline) water. Although plantations have an artificial origin, they modify environmental conditions that can alter native fungi diversity. The effects of forest management practices on a plantation of willow (Salix) and poplar (Populus) over Agaricomycetes basidiomes biodiversity were studied for one year in an island located in Paraná Delta, Argentina. Dry weight and number of basidiomes were measured. We found 28 species belonging to Agaricomycetes: 26 species of Agaricales, one species of Polyporales and one species of Russulales. Our findings suggest that forest management practices on plantations of willow and poplar do not affect either the abundance or diversity of Agaricomycetes basidiomes. The present study investigates the diversity and species composition of terrestrial isopods on three forests on the Serra Geral of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The area has two natural formations (Primary Woodland and Secondary Woodland) and one plantation of introduced Pinus.
