COLOMBIAN FROZEN BIODIVERSITY: 16 YEARS OF THE TISSUE COLLECTION OF THE HUMBOLDT INSTITUTE Acta biol.Colomb.
ARBELÁEZ-CORTÉS,Enrique; TORRES,María Fernanda; LÓPEZ-ÁLVAREZ,Diana; PALACIO-MEJÍA,Juan Diego; MENDOZA,Ángela María; MEDINA,Claudia Alejandra.
Collections of frozen tissue samples stand as keystone sources of molecular information to construct biodiversity knowledge, and are particularly challenged if they focus on megadiverse countries. In 1998 the Humboldt Institute (Instituto de Investigación de Recursos Biológicos Alexander von Humboldt) began a tissue collection of Colombian biodiversity (IAvH-CT) and the aim of this work is to present a diagnostic and an historical perspective for that collection, constructed by compiling information and experiences on its management as well as by organizing and curating the information of each catalogued sample. After 16 years, the IAvH-CT harbors 16,469 samples, which represent around 2530 species from 1289 genera, and 323 families of the Colombian...

Pathways affect vegetation structure and composition in the Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Silva,Bruna Gonçalves da; Castello,Ana Carolina Devides; Koch,Ingrid; Silva,Wesley Rodrigues.
ABSTRACT Although impacts generated by gaps can affect vegetation, few studies have addressed these impacts in the Atlantic Forest. Our aim was to investigate the effects of pathways of varying widths on vegetation structure and composition, considering dispersal syndromes, diversity, life forms, successional categories and threatened and exotic species occurrence in the Atlantic Forest. We studied three pathways with widths of 2, 10 and 20 m, intersecting a protected area in southeastern Brazil. To assess edge effects, plots were established adjacent to paths (edge) and 35 m from the edge (neighborhood), and in a control area without pathways. Wider pathways (10 and 20 m) exhibited reduced tree height and diameter, high liana density, exotic species, and...

High temperatures on root growth and lignification of transgenic glyphosate-resistant soybean Agrociencia
Zonetti,P. da Costa; Suzuki,L. Sayuri; Bonini,E. Aparecida; Ferrarese,M. L. Lucio; Ferrarese-Filho,Osvaldo.
Glyphosate resistant transgenic soybean [Glycine max (L.) Mettill] expresses a glyphosate insensitive EPSPS (5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase). This enzyme is involved in important secondary metabolism pathways, including lignin biosynthesis. Thus, differences in lignin content and growth between susceptible (OC14) and glyphosate-resistant soybean may be observed. The objective of this study was to evaluate differences between growth and lignin content of roots in transgenic and OC14 soybean cultivated at high temperatures. Seeds from the OC14 soybean and its transgenic cultivar, CD213RR, were germinated at 25, 27.5, 30 and 32.5 °C. After 3 d, seedlings were cultivated in Hoagland half-strength nutrient solution during 12 h photoperiods and at...

Evolutionary change - patterns and processes Anais da ABC (AABC)
Salzano,Francisco M..
The present review considered: (a) the factors that conditioned the early transition from non-life to life; (b) genome structure and complexity in prokaryotes, eukaryotes, and organelles; (c) comparative human chromosome genomics; and (d) the Brazilian contribution to some of these studies. Understanding the dialectical conflict between freedom and organization is fundamental to give meaning to the patterns and processes of organic evolution.

Are we close to knowing the plant diversity of the Amazon? Anais da ABC (AABC)
HOPKINS,MICHAEL J.G..
Abstract: Amazonia is often cited as having the most diverse flora on the planet. However, the total number of species of higher plants in the region has been largely a matter of guesswork. Some recent publications have estimated the total number of species present, which indicate a lower overall diversity than was estimated in the past. However, analysis of the sampling density across the region, and data from various sources suggest that there may be reason why the recent figures may be considerable underestimates. I believe that much more investment in extensive collecting of quality plant specimens is needed to encounter the very large number of rare and local species that might never have been collected. Unfortunately the tendencies of investment in...

A review on edible vaccines and their prospects BJMBR
Gunasekaran,B.; Gothandam,K.M..
For a long time, vaccines have been the main mode of defense and protection against several bacterial, viral, and parasitic diseases. However, the process of production and purification makes them expensive and unaffordable to many developing nations. An edible vaccine is when the antigen is expressed in the edible part of the plant. This reduces the cost of production of the vaccine because of ease of culturing. In this article, various types of edible vaccines that include algal and probiotics in addition to plants are discussed. Various diseases against which research has been carried out are also reviewed. This article focused on the conception of edible vaccines highlighting the various ways by which vaccines can be delivered.

Plant insulin or glucokinin: a conflicting issue Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Xavier-Filho,José; Oliveira,Antônia Elenir A.; Silva,Luciana Belarmindo da; Azevedo,Cassiana Rocha; Venâncio,Thiago Motta; Machado,Olga Lima T.; Oliva,Maria Luiza; Fernandes,Kátia Valevski S.; Xavier-Neto,José.
The presence of insulin in plants is not accepted by the scientific community in general. In this review we discuss this paradigm and retrieve information that strongly suggests that insulin is indeed found in plants. We present results, which indicate that a protein molecule with the same amino acid sequence as bovine insulin is expressed in leguminous plants. Additionally, we provide evidence that proteins associated with insulin signalling pathways in vertebrates are also found in association with insulin-like molecules in plants.

Light-dependent regulation of carotenoid biosynthesis in plants Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Pizarro,Lorena; Stange,Claudia.
Carotenoids are colored terpenes synthesized in plants, algae and some yeasts and bacteria. In plants and algae, these lipophilic molecules exert functional roles inhormonesynthesis, photosynthesis, photomorphogenesis and photoprotection. Additionally, they possess antioxidant properties and act as scavengers of reactive oxygen species. During the past decade almost all of the carotenogenic genes have been identified by molecular, genetic and biochemical approaches in the Arabidopsis thaliana model system. Carotenoid biosynthesis in plants is highly regulated, although all of the processes involved have not yet been identified. In this work, we review the mechanisms involved in the light-mediated regulation of carotenoid biosynthesis and the effect of...

The importance of flood events on the establishment of seedlings and cuttings of saltcedar (Tamarix ramosissima) Ecología austral
Natale,Evangelina; Reinoso,Herminda.
The expansion of invasive plants is considered one of the greatest threats to biodiversity. The environments more threatened by the presence of exotic invasive species are the riparian areas due to their small surface and high diversity. The advance of Tamarix in these environments may be linked to transient conditions of higher water availability, which would allow initial colonization. The objective of the present work was to determine which hydric conditions promote germination and establishment of Tamarix cuttings by measuring in the laboratory the effects of different periods of flooding. It was observed that the germination was high under irrigation at field capacity and was decreased after 10 days of flood, while the establishment through cuttings...

Nature vs. Nurture: the Making of the Montado Ecosystem Ecology and Society
The southern Iberian Peninsula is dominated by a savannah-like ecosystem, the montado, which is a typically Mediterranean cultural adaptation to generally poor productive areas. Montados are exploited for three main uses: forestry, agriculture, and extensive grazing, in proportions that vary according to local conditions (more or less productive land) and historical circumstances. Because these ecosystems occur over a large geographic area (they occupy some 6 million ha), biodiversity would be expected to vary among montados. However, differences in management practices may also influence species distribution. In this paper, we investigate differences in plant and bird species diversity among 60 montados distributed all across southern Portugal. The...

INFLUENCE OF SUBSTRATE AND SPECIES ARRANGEMENT OF CULTIVATED GRASSES ON THE EFFICIENCY OF HORIZONTAL SUBSURFACE FLOW CONSTRUCTED WETLANDS REA
Saraiva,Claudety B.; Matos,Antonio T.; Matos,Mateus P.; Miranda,Suymara T..
ABSTRACT We aimed to evaluate the efficiency of six different horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (HSSF-CWs), with different substrates (gravel and crushed PET bottles), which also varied in relation to the presence and arrangement of plant species (elephant grass and Tifton 85 bermudagrass) in the removal of pollutants from a bulk milk cooling tank (MTWW). Each bed was fed at a flow rate of 0.18 m3 d-1 and average organic load rate (OLR) of 318 kg ha-1 d-1 of BOD5, with hydraulic detention time (HRT) of 1.84 days in the gravel-filled HSSF-CWs (CWS-G) and 2.97 days in the PET-filled HSSF-CWs (CWs-P). The CWs-P were as efficient as the CWs-G in the removal of BOD5, COD, Total-P, and K-Total, being in some cases even more effective (turbidity,...

A recombination point is conserved in the mitochondrial genome of higher plant species and located downstream from the cox2 pseudogene in Solanum tuberosum L. Genet. Mol. Biol.
Tada,Susely F.S.; Souza,Anete P..
The potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) mitochondrial cox3/sdh4/pseudo-cox2 gene cluster has previously been identified by heterologous hybridization using a Marchantia polymorpha sdh4 probe. In our present study we used Southern blotting using sdh4 and cox2 probes to show that the sdh4 and cox2 genes are clustered in the mitochondria of potato, soybean and pea. Northern blotting revealed cotranscription of sdh4 and cox2 in potato but not in cauliflower, indicating that these genes are not clustered in cauliflower. A putative recombination point was detected downstream of the cox2 pseudogene (pseudo-cox2) in potato mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). This sequence corresponds to a 32 bp sequence which appears to be well-conserved and is adjacent to the terminals of some...
