Use of aqueous extract of noni in extender for sheep semen freezing Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Nascimento,A.L.C.; Santos,A.D.F.; Azevedo,H.C.; Velarde,J.M.D.S.; Lima,C.A.; Pereira,M.A.; Pinheiro,G.O.; Gomes,L.C..
ABSTRACT The study aimed to evaluate the action of aqueous extract of noni in an extender for sheep semen freezing. Treatments differed in inclusion of aqueous extract of noni in the extender: T1 ˗ no addition; T2 ˗ 24µg/mL; T3 ˗ 72µg/mL; and T4 ˗ 120µg/mL. Ejaculates were collected, diluted in the four treatments, and frozen. After thawing, the semen was subjected to a thermoresistance test and evaluated for subjective motility, vigor, membrane integrity assessment by hypo-osmotic swelling test, live-dead assay, computer-assisted sperm analysis and the status of sperm capacitation and acrosome reaction. Data were subjected to ANOVA, and then to Student Newman Keuls’s test at 5% significance level. In the thermoresistance test after two hours of...

Damage assessment of the equine sperm membranes by fluorimetric technique BABT
Celeghini,Eneiva Carla Carvalho; Andrade,André Furugen Cesar de; Raphael,Cláudia Fernandes; Nascimento,Juliana; Ticianelli,Janahi Souza; Arruda,Rubens Paes de.
To validate a practical technique of simultaneous evaluation of the plasma, acrosomal and mitochondrial membranes in equine spermatozoa three fluorescent probes (PI, FITC-PSA and MITO) were associated. Four ejaculates from three stallions (n=12) were diluted in TALP medium and split into 2 aliquots, 1 aliquot was flash frozen in liquid nitrogen to induce damage in cellular membranes. Three treatments were prepared with the following fixed ratios of fresh semen: flash frozen semen: 100:0 (T100), 50:50 (T50), and 0:100 (T0). A 150-µL aliquot of diluted semen of each treatment was added of 2 µL of PI, 2 µL of MITO and 80 µL of FITC-PSA; incubated at 38.5ºC/8 min, and sperm cells were evaluated by epifluorescent microscopy. Based in regression analysis, this...

A direct contact between astrocyte and vitreous body is possible in the rabbit eye due to discontinuities in the basement membrane of the retinal inner limiting membrane BJMBR
Haddad,A.; Salazar,J.J.; Laicine,E.M.; Ramírez,A.I.; Ramírez,J.M.; Triviño,A..
Different from most mammalian species, the optic nerve of the rabbit eye is initially formed inside the retina where myelination of the axons of the ganglion cells starts and vascularization occurs. Astrocytes are confined to these regions. The aforementioned nerve fibers known as medullated nerve fibers form two bundles that may be identified with the naked eye. The blood vessels run on the inner surface of these nerve fiber bundles (epivascularization) and, accordingly, the accompanying astrocytes lie mostly facing the vitreous body from which they are separated only by the inner limiting membrane of the retina. The arrangement of the astrocytes around blood vessels leads to the formation of structures known as glial tufts. Fragments (N = 3) or whole...

Abnormal subcellular distribution of GLUT4 protein in obese and insulin-treated diabetic female dogs BJMBR
Vargas,A.M.; Barros,R.P.A.; Zampieri,R.A.; Okamoto,M.M.; de Carvalho Papa,P.; Machado,U.F..
The GLUT4 transporter plays a key role in insulin-induced glucose uptake, which is impaired in insulin resistance. The objective of the present study was to investigate the tissue content and the subcellular distribution of GLUT4 protein in 4- to 12-year-old control, obese and insulin-treated diabetic mongrel female dogs (4 animals per group). The parametrial white adipose tissue was sampled and processed to obtain both plasma membrane and microsome subcellular fractions for GLUT4 analysis by Western blotting. There was no significant difference in glycemia and insulinemia between control and obese animals. Diabetic dogs showed hyperglycemia (369.9 ± 89.9 mg/dl). Compared to control, the plasma membrane GLUT4, reported per g tissue, was reduced by 55% (P...

Recent advances in aluminum toxicity and resistance in higher plants Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Vitorello,Victor Alexandre; Capaldi,Flávia Regina; Stefanuto,Vanderlei Antonio.
Aluminum toxicity is a major soil constraint to food and biomass production throughout the world. Considerable advances in the understanding of the mechanism of resistance involving exudation of organic acids have been made in recent years. However, despite intense research efforts, there are many aspects of Al toxicity that remain unclear. This article reviews the features of the chemistry of Al relevant to its toxicity followed by an examination of the mechanisms of toxicity and resistance. Emphasis, however, is given to the mechanisms of Al toxicity, since resistance has been covered recently by several reviews. Some topics which are specifically discussed in this review are: a) The possible role of cellular effects of low pH in Al toxicity, which has...
