Multibeam bathymetry and sidescan imaging of the Rivera Transform-Moctezuma spreading segment junction, northern East Pacific Rise: New constraints on Rivera-Pacific relative plate motion ArchiMer
Bandy, W; Michaud, F; Dyment, Jerome; Mortera Gutierrez, C; Bourgois, J; Calmus, T; Sosson, M; Ortega Ramirez, J; Royer, J; Pontoise, B; Sichler, Bertrand.
To better understand the recent motion of the Pacific plate relative to the Rivera plate and to better define the limitations of the existing Rivera-Pacific plate motion models for accurately predicting this motion, total-field magnetic data, multibeam bathymetric data and sidescan sonar images were collected during the BART and FAMEX campaigns of the N/O L'Atalante conducted in April and May 2002 in the area surrounding the Moctezuma Spreading Segment of the East Pacific Rise, located offshore of Manzanillo, Mexico, at 106 degrees 16'W, between 17.8 degrees N and 18.5 degrees N. Among the main results are: (1) the principle transform displacement zone of the Rivera Transform is narrow and well defined east of 107 degrees 15'W and these azimuths should be...

Comment on 'A new scheme for the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean and the dissection of an Aptian salt basin' by Trond H. Torsvik, Sonia Rousse, Cinthia Labails and Mark A. Smethurst ArchiMer
Aslanian, Daniel; Moulin, Maryline.
P>Torsvik et al. recently presented a revised model for the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean. According to these authors, this new plate tectonic model is internally consistent and consistent with globally balanced plate motion solutions and takes into account realistic intraplate deformation. However, this model shows a number of kinematic and geological problems that we underline here, together with some comparisons with the new kinematic model recently proposed by Moulin et al.

High-resolution estimates of Southwest Indian Ridge plate motions, 20 Ma to present ArchiMer
Demets, C.; Merkouriev, S.; Sauter, D..
We present the first estimates of Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) plate motions at high temporal resolution during the Quaternary and Neogene based on nearly 5000 crossings of 21 magnetic reversals out to C6no (19.72 Ma) and the digitized traces of 17 fracture zones and transform faults. Our reconstructions of this slow-spreading mid-ocean ridge reveal several unexpected results with notable implications for regional and global plate reconstructions since 20 Ma. Extrapolations of seafloor opening distances to zero-age seafloor based on reconstructions of reversals C1n (0.78 Ma) through C3n.4 (5.2 Ma) reveal evidence for surprisingly large outward displacement of 5 ± 1 km west of 32°E, where motion between the Nubia and Antarctic plates occurs, but 2 ± 1 km...
