Abstract: Fifty-five adult Dicrocoelium rileyiMacy, 1931 parasitizing Tadarida brasiliensis (Geoffroy, 1824) from Durango, Nuevo Leon, Puebla, Zacatecas and Mexico State were morphologically described and morphometrically analyzed. To evaluate the degree of variation among populations from the five localities, 27 morphometric measures of this species were transformed into an orthogonal factor by principal component analysis (PCA), and a posterior comparison among populations was performed using discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC). Significant differences were observed with exceptions between the Puebla – Zacatecas and Nuevo Leon – Mexico State populations when forming three groups with an 88 % assignation. The Durango population was the... |

Pomacea canaliculata is a common gastropod in freshwater habitats from Central and Northern Argentina, extending northwards into the Amazon basin. Several Platyhelminthes have been reported associated to P. canaliculata, sharing an intimate relationship with this gastropod host. The objectives of this study were to describe the symbiotic species assemblages associated to P. canaliculata in the study area, and to disclose differences among them. Samples were taken in three typical small streams and one artificial lentic lagoon, all connected with the Río de la Plata estuary. The 81.53% were infested with different symbiotic (sensu lato) species. Among the Platyhelminthes, the commensal Temnocephala iheringi Haswell, 1893 was highly prevalent in all samples,... |

The helminth communities of silverside, Odontesthes bonariensis (Valenciennes, 1835), from two Argentinean lagoons were studied and compared at component community and infracommunity levels. Nine helminth species were found: five digeneans (Austrodiplostomum cf. mordax, Ascocotyle (Phagicola) cf. diminuta, Ascocotyle sp., Thometrema bonariensis and Saccocoelioides sp.); two nematodes (Contracaecum sp. and Hysterothylacium sp.); one acanthocephalan (Wolffhugelia matercula) and one cestode (Cangatiella macdonaghi). Odontesthes bonariensis is a new host record for five parasite species. Richness, diversity and number of helminths in silversides from Salada Grande lagoon were higher than in those from Lacombe lagoon. This could be related with lagoon size,... |

Cysts of metacercariae were obtained on 2 dates from juvenile sole Solea solea sea-sampled in an area of mussel cultivation (Pertuis Charentais, Bay of Biscay, France). An initial assessment of parasite genus and infestation level was based on 192 cysts extracted from 2 fish samples, taken in August (n = 20) and December 2000 (n = 14). Our results confirmed the sole as second intermediate host of bucephalid trematodes of the genus Prosorhynchus, which has not previously been noticed in Atlantic stocks. Prevalence, ca. 65% on both dates, indicated an substantial infestation of these small fish, with a mean abundance of parasites increasing from August (3.3 +/- 1.1) to December (8.1 +/- 3.4). Cysts were localised in all body parts of the host, and... |

Based on morphological and karyological investigations, the genus complex Archiloa sensu Karling (1966) is revised. The group contains seven genera, two of which are here described as new: Archiloa de Beauchamp, 1910, Archilopsis Meixner, 1938, Mesoda Marcus, 1949, Monocelopsis Ax, 1951, Archilina Ax, 1959, Inaloa gen. n., and Tajikina gen. n. The genus Pistrix Marcus, 1951 is synonymized with Mesoda Marcus, 1949. Eleven species are transferred to other genera. Seven new Archilina species are described from the Mediterranean: A. brachycirrus, A. deceptoria, A. etrusca, A. palestinica, A. selenifera, A. biselenifera, and A. caliban. Two distinct “morphs” are recognized within A. endostyla Ax, 1959. The genus Archilina now contains 12 species, 8 of which... |

An account is given of 13 species of freshwater planarians from the family Dugesiidae, based on samples from new localities in New Zealand and Australia; these include four newly described and one problematic species. In the case of three species, the material described represents the second series of specimens available since the material used in the original descriptions of these species, as a result of which our understanding of the morphology of the animals can be expanded. In other cases, the new material also contributed to a more detailed understanding of the anatomy of the species. The study concludes with detailed distribution maps for the species examined, including not only the new distributional records described in the paper but also... |

The faunal diversity of Lake Tanganyika, with its fish species flocks and its importance as a cradle and reservoir of ancient fish lineages seeding other radiations, has generated a considerable scientific interest in the fields of evolution and biodiversity. The Tropheini, an endemic Tanganyikan cichlid tribe, fills a peculiar phylogenetic position, being closely related to the haplochromine radiations of Lakes Malawi and Victoria. Several problems remain regarding their genus-level classification. For example, the monotypic genus Interochromis is phylogenetically nested within Petrochromis; its only representative, I. loocki, has often been reclassified. As monogenean flatworms are useful markers for fish phylogeny and taxonomy, the monogenean fauna of... |

SLUYS, R., 1992. Synopsis of the freshwater triclads of the Caribbean (Platyhelminthes, Tricladida, Paludicola). Studies Nat. Hist. Caribbean Region 71, Amsterdam, 1992: 1-23. An account is given of the five species of freshwater triclads which are known from the Caribbean region, including taxonomic descriptions, karyological, ecological, and biogeographic information, supplemented with remarks on observations of previous workers and comparisons with similar species. Records of unidentified specimens are summarized. Caribbean freshwater planarians belong to the genus Girardia; the phylogenetic relationships within this genus remain to be resolved. It is argued that present distributional patterns in Caribbean Girardia’s may be the result of vicariance... |

Two monocelid species with simplex copulatory bulbs and postpharyngeal ovaries have been found in E. Australia. One of them presents a combination of characters not found in any of the known genera of the Monocelididae, and the new genus Acanthopseudomonocelis is proposed for it. The new genus is characterized by the presence of four stylet-bearing accessory organs and by an internal vagina; it is related to Pseudomonocelis. The other species, Pseudomonocelis schockaerti n. sp., is characterized by a complex bursa-vagina system, and by a highly muscular penial organ and male antrum. It is closely related to P. pardii Schockaert & Martens, 1987, from Somaliland. Two possibly additional species of the genus Pseudomonocelis, not found in a mature stage,... |

On Chichijima, one of the Ogasawara (Bonin) Islands located in the Western Pacific Ocean, land snails have declined, the suggested cause being predation pressure by an invasive flatworm (Platydemus manokwari). Soil fauna were investigated in areas where the snail survives, and where it has become extinct. Much of the fauna, dominated by introduced earthworms and ants, was undiminished, however, one undescribed but endemic carabid (Badister sp.), which selectively feeds on land snails, was absent in snail-extinct areas. The invasive flatworm P. manokwari has been reported to feed also on the carcasses of earthworms, as well as on live snails, and is therefore expected to occur in most parts of Chichijima Island. Among other groups, the density of isopods... |

ABSTRACT A new genus and species of Monogenoidea, Susanlimae ianwhittingtoni gen. nov., sp. nov., are proposed for dactylogyrids collected from the "Nuayang tipis", Pseudeutropius moolenburghae Weber & de Beaufort, 1913, which inhabits freshwater in Sumatra. While clearly a member of a putative clade that includes Asian and African catfish parasites, S. ianwhittingtoni sp. nov. differs from most members of this clade by having a bifurcated haptor that embraces the gill rakers of its host. This haptoral morphology and mode of attachment also occur in species of Bifurcohaptor Jain, 1958. However, species of Susanlimae gen. nov. are easily distinguished by the comparative morphology of their haptoral armature. In Susanlimae gen. nov., the ventral and... |
