The tip of the South American cone is one of the most interesting Subantarctic areas, both biogeographically and ecologically. Nonetheless, knowledge of the area's biodiversity, in particular that of the subtidal marine habitats, remains poor. Therefore, in 2004, a biodiversity research project was carried out as a part of the cruise Cimar-10 Fjords, organized and supported by the Chilean National Oceanographic Committee (CONA). The results of the subtidal marine mollusk surveys are presented herein. The samples were collected aboard the Agor 60 "Vidal Gormaz" in winter 2004. The study area covered the northern Chilean Patagonia from Seno de Relocanví (41°31'S) to Boca del Guafo (43°49'S), on the continental shelf from 22 to 353 m depth. The Mollusca were... |

Although most chitons (Mollusca: Polyplacophora) are shallow-water molluscs, diverse species also occur in deep-sea habitats. We investigated the feeding strategies of two species, Leptochiton boucheti and Nierstraszella lineata, recovered on sunken wood sampled in the western Pacific, close to the Vanuatu Islands. The two species display distinctly different associations with bacterial partners. Leptochiton boucheti harbours Mollicutes in regions of its gut epithelium and has no abundant bacterium associated with its gill. Nierstraszella lineata displays no dense gut-associated bacteria, but harbours bacterial filaments attached to its gill epithelium, related to the Deltaproteobacteria symbionts found in gills of the wood-eating limpet Pectinodonta sp.... |

The present paper deals with an important Danish paper on the Polyplacophora, published in 1797 by Lorentz Spengler: Udförlig Beskrivelse over det mangeskallede Konkylie-Slaegt, af Linnaeus kaldet Chiton; med endeel nye Arter og Varieteter. -Skrivter af Naturhistorie-Selskabet, 4e Bind, Ie Hefte, VI: 62-103, Tab. VI (Kiöbenhavn). In order to make this historical paper accessible to students of the group, a translation (by Dr J. Knudsen, with the assistance of the late Mrs A. Volsoe) of the original 18th century Danish text into modern English is here presented. A considerable part of the material in the "Museo Spengleriano", on which Spengler based his descriptions, is still extant, being held now in the Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen. The... |

The late Eugène Leloup examined samples from five stations of the Benthédi-Expédition, 1977, in the North of the Mozambique Channel, containing four species of chitons, two of which proved to be new to science. The material here discussed, coming from eighteen Benthédistations, proved to contain fourteen species, among which the four previously reported by Leloup (1981), and two hitherto unknown, here described as Leptochiton (Leptochiton) gloriosus spec, nov. and Ischnochiton (Ischnochiton) crassus spec. nov. The Réunion material came from nine stations and contains five species of chitons, two of which are new, viz. Leptochiton (Leptochiton) kurnilatus spec. nov. and Ischnochiton (Stenosemus) vitreolus spec. nov. |

Abstract: The reef ecosystems of Morro de São Paulo are located in the Tinharé-Boipeba Environmental Preservation Area which was established in 1992 in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Despite this area has been created more than two decades ago, no study has provided knowledge on the invertebrate biodiversity associated with such reef ecosystems. The present investigation provides the first inventory of benthic mollusks associated with the reef ecosystems of Morro de São Paulo based on the collection of living specimens and fresh empty as well as some worn shells. Mollusks were sampled in January 2015 and August 2016 through intensive searches from the intertidal to shallow subtidal habitats of the reefs on three beaches of Morro de São Paulo. Taxonomic... |
