Damselfishes (Pomacentridae, Perciformes) occur in all major oceans of the world and, with approximately 320 species, represent one of the most diverse families of marine Teleostei. The taxonomy of these reef fishes is problematic because of the large number of complex species and the range of color patterns they display, which vary among individuals and populations of the same species. In this study, we examined the cytogenetic composition of four species of Stegastes (S. pictus, S. fuscus, S. variabilis and S. leucostictus) found along the coast of Brazil. Stegastes pictus had a chromosomal number of 2n = 48 (14m+28sm+2st+4a, fundamental number (FN) = 92), S. fuscus had 2n = 48 (20m+22sm+6a, FN = 90), S. variabilis had 2n = 48 (18m+22sm+8a, FN = 88), and... |

Because of pelagic-larval dispersal, coral-reef fishes are distributed widely with minimal genetic differentiation between populations. Amphiprion akallopisos, a clownfish that uses sound production to defend its anemone territory, has a wide but disjunct distribution in the Indian Ocean. We compared sounds produced by these fishes from populations in Madagascar and Indonesia, a distance of 6500 km. Differentiation of agonistic calls into distinct types indicates a complexity not previously recorded in fishes' acoustic communication. Moreover, various acoustic parameters, including peak frequency, pulse duration, number of peaks per pulse, differed between the two populations. The geographic comparison is the first to demonstrate 'dialects' in a marine... |

Coral reef fishes often exhibit a high degree of structure in their distribution and abundance, but the factors that influence their spatial arrangement are poorly understood. This study sought to explain the spatial structure of coral reef fish communities in the Ryukyu Archipelago. southern Japan. Visual surveys of coral reef fishes were conducted at multiple stations across the fringing reef (from the inner reef flat to the outer slope) at each of three different islands; Aka, Ishigaki and Sesoko. Spatial variation in fish communities (within and among reefs) was then compared to changes in environmental variables (water depth, distance from the shoreline, reef zone, coral abundance and coral richness). Despite being small islands, the total species... |

Following the volcanic eruption of April 2007 at Reunion Island, 12 specimens of the pomacentrid genus Chromis were collected at sea surface. One of these fishes was a C. chrysura known from the reef Island fauna. The others have enlarged eyes. Among them were one C. axillaris (Bennett, 1831), new for the Island fauna, and ten specimens of a new Chromis species, described here under the name C. durvillei. This new species of deep dwelling Chromis is distinguishable by large sized eyes 1.9 to 2.4 in the head length, D. XIII, 12-13, 25 to 26 gill-rakers on the first gill arch, three spiniform procurrent caudal rays, without black or dark brown spot or band on the body, pectorals or caudal peduncle. C. axillaris, C. woodsi, C. unipa, C. okamurai, C.... |

A new species of damselfish Chromis lubbocki (Teleostei: Pomacentridae) from the Cape Verde Archipelago is described. The following combination of characters separates C. lubbocki from other eastern Atlantic Chromis: Dorsal fin rays XIV, 12; pectoral fin rays 20 (occasionally 19 or 21); transverse scale rows 27 (rarely 26); scales below lateral-line 9, scales between terminal lateral-line scale and dorsal base 1 1/2; 22-24 gill-rakers on lower limb of first gill-arch; second anal spine longer than longest anal ray; length of second anal spine 18.0-22.2% SL; pelvic fins short, length of longest ray 23.0-29.6% SL; fins yellowish in life. A key to the five species of Chromis now known from the eastern Atlantic is provided and their nomenclature discussed.... |
