Using Standing Postures as a Practical Alternative to Gait Analysis for Assessing Normal Neuromotor Activity Variation of the Ankle Muscle Antagonists: A Soleus H-reflex and EMG Activity Study Comparing Patients with Hemiplegia to Healthy Subjects International Journal of Morphology
Pineda,Enrique; Sabbahi,M; Etnyre,B.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the soleus H-reflex amplitudes recorded in three standing postures between a group of patients with stroke and a group of healthy subjects. Nine ambulatory patients were compared with 10 healthy subjects. Measures were recorded during quiet standing (QS), heels raised (PO) and with the foot of the measured leg held just off the ground while standing on the opposite leg (SW). The results showed that patients, as opposed to the healthy group, did not inhibit soleus H-reflex in the SW posture. As opposed to evaluating ankle motor control during gait, the PO and SW standing postures appeared to offer a practical and objective method to assess soleus H-reflex when the purpose is to determine impairment (or...

Using Standing Postures as a Practical Alternative to Gait Analysis for Assessing Normal Neuromotor Activity Variation of the Ankle Muscle Antagonists: A Soleus H-Reflex and EMG Activity Study International Journal of Morphology
Pineda,E. E; Sabbahi,M. A; Etnyre,B. R.
Soleus and tibialis anterior muscle EMG and soleus H-reflex are widely used to study ankle motor control during gait. Normally, the soleus H-reflex amplitude and EMG activity varies greatly through the course of walking. The examining of these events during walking requires space and resources that are generally found only in research oriented facilities, making difficult a more practical use. Earlier reports have suggested that normal variation of the soleus H-reflex and EMG could be determined from standing postures. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to examine and determine which standing postures would reproduce the normal neuromotor variation of the ankle muscle antagonists. A total of five postures were investigated. The results of this...

Oviposition activity of Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) in responseto different organic infusions Neotropical Entomology
Santos,Eloína; Correia,Juliana; Muniz,Luciana; Meiado,Marcos; Albuquerque,Cleide.
The present study investigates new sources of infusion as an oviposition attractant for Aedes aegypti L. Infusions with fetid and non-fetid odors were compared as an oviposition stimulant. Traps baited with infusions of dehydrated cashew leaves (Anacardium occidentale), potato peels (Solanum tuberosum) and graminea (Panicum maximum) were compared as attractants, and the effect of odor (fetid and unfetid) on attractiveness was tested. Oviposition activity changed significantly according to the concentration and type of infusion (F = 4.1279; gl = 2; P = 0.0231). A larger number of eggs were observed in cups containing 50% A. occidentale (non-fetid odor) and 30% P. maximum (fetid odor). When compared in the same cage, comparable oviposition was found between...

Danos de Oncideres saga em plantios de Acacia mearnsii no Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Magistrali, Iris Cristiane; Costa, Ervandil Corrêa; Garlet, Juliana; Boscardin, Jardel; Machado, Leonardo Mortari.

Equilibrium Condition during Locomotion and Gait in Broiler Chickens Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Alves,MCF; Almeida Paz,ICL; Nääs,IA; Garcia,RG; Caldara,FR; Baldo,GAA; Nascimento,GR; Amadori,MS; Felix,GA; Garcia,EA; Molino,AR.
ABSTRACT The experiment was carried out with the objective of evaluating a methodology to estimate the angulation and equilibrium condition, relating them to gait score and the main diseases of the locomotion system in males and females of commercial broiler strains. A completely randomized experimental design in a factorial arrangement (2x2) was applied, consisting of two sexes and two genetic strains, with five replicates of 53 chickens each. The following characteristics related to broiler locomotion were studied: gait score (GS); incidence of Valgus (VAL) and Varus (VAR) deformities and of pododermatitis (POD); body angle relative the ground (ANG); equilibrium condition (EC); body weight (BW) and breast weight (BrW); and incidence of femoral...

Metabolizable energy levels for semi-heavy laying hens at the second production cycle R. Bras. Zootec.
Costa,Fernando Guilherme Perazzo; Costa,Janaine Sena da; Goulart,Cláudia de Castro; Figueiredo-Lima,Denise Fontana; Lima Neto,Raul da Cunha; Quirino,Bárbara Josefina de Sousa.
This study was carried out to evaluate the energy levels in the diet to obtain better performance rates and quality of eggs from laying hens in the second production cycle. One hundred and eighty Bovans Goldline laying hens with 62 weeks of age were used during four 28-day periods. A completely randomized experimental design was used with four metabolizable energy levels (2,650, 2,725, 2,800, 2,875 and 2,950 kcal/kg), each with six replicates of six birds. The energy level of diet did not affect the weight of the egg, yolk, albumen and eggshell, the percentages of yolk, albumen and eggshell, yolk color and egg specific gravity. Feed intake, egg production, egg mass and feed conversion per egg mass and per dozen eggs increased significantly with increasing...

Chlorinated drinking water for lightweight laying hens Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Schneider,A.F.; Almeida,D.S.; Moraes,A.N.; Picinin,L.C.A.; Oliveira,V.; Gewehr,C.E..
ABSTRACT The study aimed to evaluate the effect of different levels of chlorine in drinking water of laying hens on zootechnical performance, eggs shell quality, hemogasometry levels and calcium content in tibia. 144 Hy-Line laying hens, 61 weeks old, were used distributed in 24 metabolism cages. They were subjected to water diets, for a period of 28 days, using sodium hypochlorite as a chlorine source in order to obtain the following concentrations: 5ppm (control), 20ppm, 50ppm, and 100ppm. Their performance was evaluated through water consumption, feed intake, egg production and weight, egg mass, feed conversion. Shell quality was measured by specific gravity. At the end of the experiment, arterial blood was collected for blood gas level assessment and a...
