Genotype selection and addition of fertilizer increases grain yield in upland rice in Suriname Acta Amazonica
NASCENTE,Adriano Stephan; KROMOCARDI,Ruby.
ABSTRACT The upland rice farmers in Suriname use local varieties and low level technologies in the field. As a result, the upland rice grain yield is low, at about 1 000 kg ha-1. Our objective was to evaluate the use of upland rice cultivars from Suriname and Brazil, and the effect of nitrogen, N, phosphorus, P, and potassium, K, fertilizers on cultivation variables. We undertook four field trials in the Victoria Area, in the Brokopondo District, using a randomized block design each with four replications. The most productive rice varieties were BRS Esmeralda (grain yield 2 903 kg ha-1) and BRS Sertaneja (2 802 kg ha-1). The highest grain yield of 2 620 kg ha-1 was achieved with a top dressing application of 76.41 kg N ha-1 20 days after sowing. For P, the...

Relation between chemical composition of Grateloupia doryphora (Montagne) Howe, Gymnogongrus griffithsiae (Turner) Martius, and abiotic parameters Acta Botanica
Perfeto,Paulo Nelo Medeiros.
In Grateloupia doryphora and Gymnogongrus griffithsiae the seasonal variation of their chemical compounds was studied, establishing a relation with the physical and chemical properties of seawater. High values of proteins in the studied species were detected during the winter, 28.88% in G. doryphora and 26.68% in G. griffithsiae, corresponding to the maximum period of ammonium concentration in the marine environment. The variation in carbohydrates content showed an inverse relation with the proteins, with a maximum of 54.72% in G. doryphora and of 55.36% in G. griffithsiae, both in summer, positively correlated with salinity and temperature of sea water. Lipids content was low in both species. In G. doryphora the values ranged between 0.81 and 1.30% and,...

Effect of salt stress on physiology and agronomy characterstic of barley cultivars CIGR Journal
sorkhi, farshad.
In most northwest provinces of Iran such as West Azarbaijan province, soil salinity is a growing problem, particularly in irrigated agricultural areas, and has been found to reduce barley yield, dramatically. To investigate the effect of sodium chloride on two barley (Hordeum vulgare) cultivars, four levels of salinity: 0, 4, 8 and 12 dS/m, were employed as a factorial experiment arranged in a completely randomized design with three replications in a controlled environment of the greenhouse during 2017-2018. The results indicated that increasing salinity from 0 to 12 dS/m, decreased the emergence percentage significantly. Two cultivars of Zarjoo and Valfajr responded differently to salinity, so that Zarjoo showed a significantly higher emergence rate. This...

Abstract The long tradition of green bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivation in Croatia has resulted in the development of a landraces adapted to specific areas and chosen to suit different dietary habits. The hypothesis of our study was that nutritional quality (content of proteins, sugars, fibres, calcium, potassium and phosphorus in fresh pods) of 14 widely grown Croatian green bean accessions is affected by origin and morphotype. The analysed accessions were grown in non-replicated field plots where morphotypes were classified. The gene pool of adscription (Andean vs. Mesoamerican) of each accession was determined with the phaseolin marker, whereas nutritional quality traits were analysed according to standard analytical methods. The relationships...

Osmotic stress induced by polyethylene-glycol alters macronutrient concentrations in sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) plants in vitro Agrociencia
Castañeda-Castro,Odón; Gómez-Merino,Fernando C.; Trejo-Téllez,Libia I.; Pastelín-Solano,Miriam C..
The potential capacity of plant roots to absorb water and nutrients generally declines in osmotic-stressed plants, presumably because of a reduction in the nutrient element demand, and such decrease varies among plant genotypes. In order to investigate the effect of the osmotic stress caused by polyethylene-glycol 6000 (PEG) on the macronutrient concentration in sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) in vitro, we established a factorial experiment with a completely randomized distribution. Study factors were variety (Mex 69-290 and CP 72-2086) and PEG in the nutrient medium (0, 3, 6 and 9 %, to generate osmotic potential corresponding to -0.18, -0.45, -0.65 and -0.80 MPa, respectively), which resulted in eight treatments, with five replicates each. The experimental...

Exchangeable basic cations and nitrogen distribution in soil as affected by crop residues and nitrogen BABT
Rosolem,Ciro Antonio.
In this work, a greenhouse experiment was conducted to study the effects of N fertilization and residues of pearl millet, black oats and oilseed radish on pH and Ca, Mg, K, NO3-, and NH4+ distribution within the profile of a Distroferric Red Latosol. The equivalent of 8 t ha-1 of plant residues were placed on soil surface. Lime was applied on the soil surface and nitrogen was applied over the straw at 0, 50, 100, and 150 mg kg-1, as ammonium nitrate. Corn was grown for 57 days. Calcium contents and pH in the soil profile were decreased by Pearl millet residue, while black oat and oilseed radish increased Ca contents and these effects are not related with Ca contents in residue tissue. However, the presence of plant residues increased nitrate, ammonium, and...

Development of the insulin secretion mechanism in fetal and neonatal rat pancreatic B-cells: response to glucose, K+, theophylline, and carbamylcholine BJMBR
Mendonça,A.C.; Carneiro,E.M.; Bosqueiro,J.R.; Crepaldi-Alves,S.C.; Boschero,A.C..
We studied the development of the insulin secretion mechanism in the pancreas of fetal (19- and 21-day-old), neonatal (3-day-old), and adult (90-day-old) rats in response to stimulation with 8.3 or 16.7 mM glucose, 30 mM K+, 5 mM theophylline (Theo) and 200 µM carbamylcholine (Cch). No effect of glucose or high K+ was observed on the pancreas from 19-day-old fetuses, whereas Theo and Cch significantly increased insulin secretion at this age (82 and 127% above basal levels, respectively). High K+ also failed to alter the insulin secretion in the pancreas from 21-day-old fetuses, whereas 8.3 mM and 16.7 mM glucose significantly stimulated insulin release by 41 and 54% above basal levels, respectively. Similar results were obtained with Theo and Cch. A more...

Effect of salt intake and potassium supplementation on brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity in Chinese subjects: an interventional study BJMBR
Wang,Y.; Mu,J.J.; Geng,L.K.; Wang,D.; Ren,K.Y.; Guo,T.S.; Chu,C.; Xie,B.Q.; Liu,F.Q.; Yuan,Z.Y..
Accumulating evidence has suggested that high salt and potassium might be associated with vascular function. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of salt intake and potassium supplementation on brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (PWV) in Chinese subjects. Forty-nine subjects (28-65 years of age) were selected from a rural community of northern China. All subjects were sequentially maintained on a low-salt diet for 7 days (3.0 g/day NaCl), a high-salt diet for an additional 7 days (18.0 g/day NaCl), and a high-salt diet with potassium supplementation for a final 7 days (18.0 g/day NaCl+4.5 g/day KCl). Brachial-ankle PWV was measured at baseline and on the last day of each intervention. Blood pressure levels were significantly increased from...

Adrenoceptors of the medial septal area modulate water intake and renal excretory function induced by central administration of angiotensin II BJMBR
Saad,W.A.; Guarda,I.F.M.S.; Camargo,L.A.A.; Santos,T.A.F.B.; Simões,S.; Saad,Willian A..
We investigated the role of a-adrenergic antagonists and clonidine injected into the medial septal area (MSA) on water intake and the decrease in Na+, K+ and urine elicited by ANGII injection into the third ventricle (3rdV). Male Holtzman rats with stainless steel cannulas implanted into the 3rdV and MSA were used. ANGII (12 nmol/µl) increased water intake (12.5 ± 1.7 ml/120 min). Clonidine (20 nmol/µl) injected into the MSA reduced the ANGII-induced water intake (2.9 ± 0.5 ml/120 min). Pretreatment with 80 nmol/µl yohimbine or prazosin into the MSA also reduced the ANGII-induced water intake (3.0 ± 0.4 and 3.1 ± 0.2 ml/120 min, respectively). Yohimbine + prazosin + clonidine injected into the MSA abolished the ANGII-induced water intake (0.2 ± 0.1 and 0.2...

Mitochondrial K+ transport and cardiac protection during ischemia/reperfusion BJMBR
Carreira,R.S.; Facundo,H.T.F.; Kowaltowski,A.J..
Mitochondrial ion transport, oxidative phosphorylation, redox balance, and physical integrity are key factors in tissue survival following potentially damaging conditions such as ischemia/reperfusion. Recent research has demonstrated that pharmacologically activated inner mitochondrial membrane ATP-sensitive K+ channels (mitoK ATP) are strongly cardioprotective under these conditions. Furthermore, mitoK ATP are physiologically activated during ischemic preconditioning, a procedure which protects against ischemic damage. In this review, we discuss mechanisms by which mitoK ATP may be activated during preconditioning and the mitochondrial and cellular consequences of this activation, focusing on end-effects which may promote ischemic protection. These...

Changes in growth variables and potassium content in leaves of Black Barley in response to NaCl Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Abu-Al-Basal,Mariam A.; Yasseen,Bassam T..
Much attention is being focused on the Black barley (Hordeum distichum L.) as a local cultivar offering good model for a cereal crop has traits of resistance to drought and salinity during vegetative growth stages. Although Black was sensitive to salt stress during germination, it developed gradual tolerance with age and proved very tolerant during growth and development stages. The data of study clearly revealed how this cultivar was superior over Arivat (Hordeum vulgare L.) in many physiological aspects such as leaf growth variables (i.e. rate and duration) and processes (i.e. cell division), tiller production and potassium content. Black barley had more tillers, faster rate and longer duration of growth processes which was accompanied with potassium...
