Potato is one of the most important agricultural products that has great nutritional and industrial value. Potato seed tubers are usually used for growing this crop, but separating the seed tubers from the edible ones is tedious, time consuming and costly process. Therefore, a rotating potato sorting machine was designed, developed and evaluated in this research. This machine was able to sort potato tubers according to their size. Effects of sieves slope angle and rotational speed on the tubers mechanical damage, sorting accuracy and capacity of designed machine were evaluated. The test was conducted in the factorial experiment format with three replications based on a completely randomized experimental design. Three levels of sieves slope angle (5, 10 and... |

The effect of drying behaviour on the drying rate and quality characteristics of potato slices in a vacuum-infrared drying system was studied. In this research, the effect of the infrared radiation powers (100, 150, and 200 W) and vacuum levels (20, 80, 140 mmHg and atmosphere pressure) at different slice thickness (1, 2 and 3 mm) on drying rate and shrinkage percentage and rehydration capacity were investigated. It was concluded that infrared radiation power amount has a significant effect on processing time and drying rate. With increasing radiation power, drying time is reduced and consequently drying rate is increased. The drying rate curve of potato slices at initial drying time is in the ascending phase because of surface moisture evaporation and... |

ABSTRACTPotato crop (Solanum tuberosum) in Egypt is one of the major vegetable crops, as it is grown each year, cultivated area is 437386 feddan (183702 ha), and quantity of production is 4955445 ton (Agricultural Statistics Yearbook, 2015). The farming structure in Egypt has totally changed during the past 50 years. It has gone from a small number of very large holdings to very large number of small holdings (FAO, 2010). The main objectives of this research were to develop, manufacture and evaluate self propelled potato harvesting machine suitable for smallholdings, the following steps were used. The develop and manufacture of the self propelled machine were conducted at the Agricultural Engineering Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University and... |

ABSTRACT This work evaluated the effects of ionizing radiation on the physico-chemical and sensory characteristics of the potato cultivar Ágata (Solanum tuberosum L.), including budding and deterioration, with the end goal of increasing shelf life. For this, four groups of samples were harvested at the maturation stage. Three of them were separately exposed to a Co-60 source, receiving respective doses of 0.10, 0.15 and 2.00 kGy, while the non-irradiated group was kept as a control. All samples were stored for 35 days at 24 °C (± 2) and at 39% relative humidity. The following aspects were evaluated: budding, rot, loss of weight, texture, flesh color, moisture, external and internal appearance, aroma, soluble solids, titratable acidity, vitamin C, protein,... |

Cultivated potato crops are sensitive to drought stress, reducing yield and tuber quality when the soil water potential drops to -0.3 MPa. However, drought not only affects plant growth and physiological activity, but this stress also induces biochemical and molecular changes in the cellular gene expression profile. triggering genes that play a direct role in plant protection and gene regulation. The genes involved in regulation include C-repeat Binding Factors/Dehydration responsive element binding (CBF/DREB) transcription factors, which increase cold, drought and salt tolerance in different plant species. The aim of this research was to evaluate whether the overexpression of the ScCBF1 gene from Solanum commersonii enhances drought stress tolerance in... |

Late blight (Phytophthora infestans) is the most destructive fungal disease of potato (Solanum tuberosum) in Argentina, reducing yields considerably. During the 1986-2005 growing seasons, fungicide treatments to control potato late blight were performed using mancozeb (Dithane M80 WP, Dow AgroScience Argentina, 1986-2005) every 7 d, metalaxil+mancozeb (Ridomil MZ 72 WP, Syngenta Agro Argentina, 1986-1995) every 14 d, and mefenoxam+mancozeb (Ridomil Gold 68 WP, 1996-2005) every 7 d. Blight severity was rated five times each season on the basis of the percentage of diseased foliage caused by late blight. Five visual assessments of infection were used to calcúlate the area under the disease-progress curve (AUDPC, foliar blight x day). Marketable (>60 g)... |

Abstract The number of attributes, related to the selection of potato varieties, was evaluated with reference to their potential in chip processing. Five commercial varieties of potato were analyzed regarding their physico-chemical, functional, and processing aspects. In general, Lady Rosetta subsequently, Chipsona were the most noticeable potato varieties considering their physical attributes. A significant correlation (R = 0.925) was estimated amongst geometric mean diameter and surface area. Maximum dry matter and starch contents were observed in Lady Rosetta followed by Chipsona. Desiree showed higher fat, sugar and mineral contents than all other selected potato cultivars. Promising correlation (R= 0.952) was estimated among total minerals and ash... |

ABSTRACT: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the colchicine and oryzalin anti-mitotic substances on the induction of tetraploid plants and foliar anatomy of two diploids clones of Solanum commersonii ssp. Nodal segments of Solanum commersonii subsp. commersonii Dun. and Solanum commersonii subsp. malmeanum Bitt. were treated with colchicine (3.5, 5.0, and 6.5mM; 72h) or oryzalin (10, 30, and 50µM; 24h). After the treatment with anti-mitotic substances, nodal segments were inoculated in the MS culture medium and cultivated in vitro (60 days). After in vitro cultivation, the plants were transferred to vases with the substrate Plantmax(r) and kept in the greenhouse (45 days). Plant ploidy level was assessed by flow cytometry and leaf... |

This study evaluated and compared the effect of the utilization of five different non-conventional starches (chickpea, common bean, Peruvian carrot, sweet potato and white bean) and four different commercial starches (cassava, corn, potato and rice) in pound cake. Common bean starch, followed by Peruvian carrot starch were the non-conventional starch sources that showed tendency to improve the technological quality of pound cake, mainly in relation to corn starch, the most common commercial source. With these sources, the batters presented lower specific gravity and the cakes presented higher specific volume, lighter color, lower crumb moisture reduction during the storage period, and better texture attributes during all the cake shelf-life. Moreover,... |

Background: Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is one of the most important sources of carbohydrates in human diet. Because of its high carbohydrate levels it recently has also received attention in biohydrogen production. To exploit the natural variation of potato with respect to resistance to major diseases, carbohydrate levels and composition, and capacity for biohydrogen production we analyzed tubers of native, improved, and genetically modified potatoes, and two other tuberous species for their glucose, fructose, sucrose, and starch content. Results: High-starch potato varieties were evaluated for their potential for Caldicellulosiruptor saccharolyticus-mediated biohydrogen production with Desirée and Rosita varieties delivering the highest biohydrogen... |
