Hafezi, Negar; Sheikhdavoodi, Mohammad Javad; Sajadiye, Seyed Majid.
The effect of drying behaviour on the drying rate and quality characteristics of potato slices in a vacuum-infrared drying system was studied. In this research, the effect of the infrared radiation powers (100, 150, and 200 W) and vacuum levels (20, 80, 140 mmHg and atmosphere pressure) at different slice thickness (1, 2 and 3 mm) on drying rate and shrinkage percentage and rehydration capacity were investigated.  It was concluded that infrared radiation power amount has a significant effect on processing time and drying rate. With increasing radiation power, drying time is reduced and consequently drying rate is increased. The drying rate curve of potato slices at initial drying time is in the ascending phase because of surface moisture evaporation and...

Characterization of Bacillus isolates of potato rhizosphere from andean soils of Peru and their potential PGPR characteristics BJM
Calvo,Pamela; Ormeño-Orrillo,Ernesto; Martínez-Romero,Esperanza; Zúñiga,Doris.
Bacillus spp. are well known rhizosphere residents of many crops and usually show plant growth promoting (PGP) activities that include biocontrol capacity against some phytopatogenic fungi. Potato crops in the Andean Highlands of Peru face many nutritional and phytophatogenic problems that have a significant impact on production. In this context is important to investigate the natural presence of these microorganisms in the potato rhizosphere and propose a selective screening to find promising PGP strains. In this study, sixty three Bacillus strains isolated from the rhizosphere of native potato varieties growing in the Andean highlands of Peru were screened for in vitro antagonism against Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium solani. A high prevalence (68%) of...

Enhanced in vitro drought tolerance of Solanum tuberosum and Solanum commersonii plants overexpressing the ScCBF1 gene Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Pino,María Teresa; Ávila,Andrea; Molina,Andrea; Jeknic,Zoran; Chen,Tony H.H.
Cultivated potato crops are sensitive to drought stress, reducing yield and tuber quality when the soil water potential drops to -0.3 MPa. However, drought not only affects plant growth and physiological activity, but this stress also induces biochemical and molecular changes in the cellular gene expression profile. triggering genes that play a direct role in plant protection and gene regulation. The genes involved in regulation include C-repeat Binding Factors/Dehydration responsive element binding (CBF/DREB) transcription factors, which increase cold, drought and salt tolerance in different plant species. The aim of this research was to evaluate whether the overexpression of the ScCBF1 gene from Solanum commersonii enhances drought stress tolerance in...

Importance of potato late blight in Argentina, and the effect of fungicide treatments on yield increments over twenty years Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Mantecón,Jorge D.
Late blight (Phytophthora infestans) is the most destructive fungal disease of potato (Solanum tuberosum) in Argentina, reducing yields considerably. During the 1986-2005 growing seasons, fungicide treatments to control potato late blight were performed using mancozeb (Dithane M80 WP, Dow AgroScience Argentina, 1986-2005) every 7 d, metalaxil+mancozeb (Ridomil MZ 72 WP, Syngenta Agro Argentina, 1986-1995) every 14 d, and mefenoxam+mancozeb (Ridomil Gold 68 WP, 1996-2005) every 7 d. Blight severity was rated five times each season on the basis of the percentage of diseased foliage caused by late blight. Five visual assessments of infection were used to calcúlate the area under the disease-progress curve (AUDPC, foliar blight x day). Marketable (>60 g)...
