Poultry litter angle of wall friction CIGR Journal
Iman Valaei; Seyed Reza Hassan-Beygi; Mohammad Hossein Kianmehr; Hadi Rahmanzadeh Bahram.
Dependence on chemical fertilizer is continually increasing.  Continual increasing of using chemical fertilizer causes nature pollution (e.g. water contamination).  This has led researchers to aggressively investigate renewable fertilizer resources and biomass to produce organic crops and reduced wastage.  Poultry litter is a bulk solid and biomass feed stocks. The angle of wall friction (AWF) is a critical factor in designing and constructing suitable equipment for pelletizing.  The results of this study showed that the simple effects of the moisture content (M) and surface types (S) as well as interaction of the S × particle size (P) and S × M were significant (P

The influence of diurnal variation in animal activity and digestion on animal heat production CIGR Journal
Pedersen, Soren.
Dimensioning of air conditioning plants for animal houses is traditionally based on steady-state conditions with constant animal heat and moisture production over a 24-hour cycle, despite the fact that the heat and moisture production varies diurnally. The heat production is normally highest in daytime and lowest during the night and therefore, there will be a discrepancy between the actual and the calculated indoor temperature and humidity, when using steady state models to control ventilation rate.  This article deals with the two main factors influencing on the diurnal heat production, namely the animal activity and the digestion of food. In experiments carried out over three years in respiration chambers at Research Centre Foulum, Denmark, the diurnal...

The Role of Information and Communication Technology in Poultry Broiler Production Process Control CIGR Journal
Jackman, Patrick; Penya, Hector; Ross, Robert.
Broiler production is arguably one of the most challenging food supply industries in the world due to the large number of animals that are reared on a given site, and the competitive nature of the sector. These factors taken together mean that every opportunity to optimise the production process must be considered to boost bird weight gain while at the same time reducing resource investment and risk of major incidents. As a result of this, the last decade has seen the introduction of Precision Livestock Farming techniques to the broiler production industry. In this paper we review the emergence and trends in Precision Livestock Farming in the broiler production industry by examining both in-market and laboratory based advances for this sector. The review...

Heat and moisture production in growing-finishing pigs and broilers CIGR Journal
Aarnink-FBC, Andre.
Heat and moisture production are important parameters for designing ventilation and climate control systems in livestock housing. In 2002 a report was published of the CIGR Section II Working Group on Climatization of Animal Houses ‘Heat and moisture production at animal and house levels’ with formula to calculate heat and moisture production for different livestock categories. The objective of this paper is to discuss these CIGR formula for growing-finishing pigs and broilers. Results from calculated heat and moisture production with the relatively simple formula in the CIGR report were compared with results from a more comprehensive model. From this comparison the following conclusions were drawn: 1) The relatively simple CIGR formula to calculate total...
