Influencia del aporte de progesterona exógena (CIDR) post-inseminación sobre la fertilidad de ovinos de las razas cruza Suffolk-Dorset. Colegio de Postgraduados
Torres Lemus, Fidel Miguel.

The beliefs of mothers in southern Brazil regarding risk-factors associated with congenital abnormalities Genet. Mol. Biol.
Garcias,Gilberto de Lima; Schüler-Faccini,Lavínia.
We describes a study in which conventional wisdom about congenital malformations was investigated, the two main objectives being to list mothers' ideas by comparing six well-known causes of congenital abnormalities (ingestion of alcoholic beverages, smoking tobacco, drug use, marriage between relatives (consanguinity), rubella infection, maternal age) with explanations current in the general population and to discover the most common fallacies held by the general population concerning such abnormalities. The data were collected from 1 January to 31 December 1995 during a population study in which mothers were interviewed in hospitals in the city of Pelotas (population 400,000), Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. On each day of the study, the first three...

Teratogens: a public health issue – a Brazilian overview Genet. Mol. Biol.
Mazzu-Nascimento,Thiago; Melo,Débora Gusmão; Morbioli,Giorgio Gianini; Carrilho,Emanuel; Vianna,Fernanda Sales Luiz; Silva,André Anjos da; Schuler-Faccini,Lavinia.
Abstract Congenital anomalies are already the second cause of infant mortality in Brazil, as in many other middle-income countries in Latin America. Birth defects are a result of both genetic and environmental factors, but a multifactorial etiology has been more frequently observed. Here, we address the environmental causes of birth defects – or teratogens – as a public health issue and present their mechanisms of action, categories and their respective maternal-fetal deleterious effects. We also present a survey from 2008 to 2013 of Brazilian cases involving congenital anomalies (annual average of 20,205), fetal deaths (annual average of 1,530), infant hospitalizations (annual average of 82,452), number of deaths of hospitalized infants (annual average of...

Abstract In 1990, the first Teratogen Information Service in Brazil (SIAT) was implemented in the Medical Genetics Service at Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre. SIAT is a free-to-use information service both to health professionals and the general population, especially to women who are pregnant or planning pregnancy. The main objective of this paper is to present the activities of SIAT in its initial years (1990-2006), compared to those in the last decade (2007-2017). In addition we review the scientific contribution of SIAT in the field of human teratogenesis. Since 1990, SIAT received 10,533 calls. Use of medications were the main reason for concern, accounting for 74% of all questions, followed by other chemical exposures (occupational, cosmetics,...

Trace element levels in foetus-mother pairs of short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) stranded along the French coasts ArchiMer
Lahaye, V; Bustamante, Paco; Dabin, W; Churlaud, C; Caurant, Florence.
Tissues of foetus-mother pairs of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) stranded along the French coasts (Bay of Biscay and English Channel) were analysed for their Cd, Cu, Hg, Se and Zn contents. In the kidneys, foetal Cd levels were extremely low, and strong relationships between Cu and Zn suggested the involvement of metallothioneins since early foetal life. The results also indicated a limited maternal transfer of Hg during pregnancy since levels in the tissues of foetuses were below 1 mu g g(-1) w.wt. However, hepatic Hg levels in foetuses increased with body length, and were also proportionate to maternal hepatic, renal and muscular Hg levels. Lastly, affinities between Hg and Se in tissues would participate in Hg neutralisation in both mothers-through...

EFFECTS OF PYRAZINAMIDE ON PREGNANT ALBINO RATS International Journal of Morphology
Pascale Quintino,Marisa; Simões,Manuel de Jesus; Uchiyama Nakamura,Mary; Martins Oliveira-Filho,Ricardo; Espiridião,Silvia; Kulay Júnior,Luiz.
Although being used for years in the treatment of tuberculosis, no data are available in the literature on the safety of pyrazinamide during pregnancy. Accordingly, we aimed to make a first approach to this problem by evaluating the effects of this drug administered during the entire pregnancy of albino rats. Fourty female, EPM-1 Wistar albino rats of about 250 g b.w. were used. Upon conception (day zero of pregnancy) the animals were randomly divided in 4 groups of 10 rats each and labeled as follows. Controls (C), animals treated with the drug vehicle (destilled water); experimental groups (E1, E2 and E3), animals treated with 35, 105 or 315 mg/kg b.w. pyrazinamide by gavage (oral route) once daily up to the term (20th day of pregnancy). Drug or vehicle...

Morphological Analysis of Neonates of Rats Treated with Dexamethasone in the Initial Phase of Pregnancy International Journal of Morphology
Vilaça Júnior,Paulo Estevao Araújo; Teixeira,Alvaro Aguiar Coelho; Wanderley Teixeira,Valéria; Moraes,Eleonora de Figueiredo; Araújo,Ana Claudia Carvalho de; Maia,Carina Scanoni.
The glucocorticoid dexamethasone has been largely used due to its anti-inflammatory effect. However, several authors report that the excessive exposition to it during pregnancy may cause a retard in the development in several tissues, mainly: liver, lungs and kidneys. But, the majority of the works are done with the application of dexamethasone in the late periods of pregnancy. Because of the lack of researches that evalúate the effects in the beginning of gestation, this paper aimed at evaluating the effect of dexamethasone administered in the initial phase of pregnancy, o ver the morphology of neonates rat. It was used 10 albino rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus) aged 90 days from the lineage Wistar. The female were coupled and divided in two groups: Group...

Chronic stress by immobilization during pregnancy may cause alterations in mechanisms maintaining homeostasis in the adrenal gland. The objective of this study was to quantify cellular proliferation index in the adrenal cortex during pregnancy second half and assess the effects of chronic stress on it. Adrenal cortex proliferation index in stressed rats showed a significant decrease at 12 and 17 days of gestation, while at day 21 it did not show differences with the control treatments. Moreover, proliferation index of reticular zones in control and experimental rats, exhibited a significant reduction in comparison to glomerular and fascicular zones of adrenal cortex during the three gestation days studied. In conclusion, chronic stress by immobilization...

Evaluation of Placental Epigenetic Changes due to Morphine Consumption International Journal of Morphology
Kazemi,Masoomeh; Tekieh,Elaheh; Golabi,Sahar; Sahraei,Hedayat.
Based on previous studies, a variety of bioenvironmental elements including inappropriate nutrition, diseases, infections, stressors, and medications are involved in epigenetic changes. Drug abuse is one of the most important causes of epigenetic changes and a concern in today's world. Studies have shown that morphine use by pregnant mothers causes several disorders in mothers in addition to transferring abnormalities to the next generation (placenta and embryo). Epigenetic factors such as morphine cause changes in gene expression in placenta as the first embryonic defense barrier. Because placenta does all the nutritional exchanges between mother's and embryo's blood, placental health guarantees normal embryonic development. Many studies have been...

Effect of Lamivudine on the Rat Pregnancy Outcome International Journal of Morphology
Pontes,Rosana Dorsa Vieira; Amed,Abês Mamed; Simões,Manuel Jesus; Oliveira-Filho,Ricardo Martins; Simões,Ricardo Santos; Kulay Jr,Luiz.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is in growing incidence throughout the world. Due to the increasing proportion of affected women in reproductive years, the association of pregnancy with HIV infection becomes a matter of major Public Health concern. Antiretroviral drug administration turned out to be imperative during pregnancy in order to prevent the vertical transmission; accordingly, new antiretroviral drugs and anti-HIV drug associations have been tested in experimental pregnancy models before they are approved to be included in protocols for use during human pregnancy. Lamivudine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor currently used in association with other antiretrovirals. Since no data exist on the perinatal safety of...

Foscarnet Effects on the Rat Pregnancy Outcome International Journal of Morphology
Venneri Mathias,Cícero; Simões,Manuel de Jesus; Mahmed Amed,Abes; Martins Oliveira-Filho,Ricardo; Venneri Mathias,Camila Fernandes; dos Santos Simões,Ricardo; Kulay Júnior,Luiz.
There are few long-term data on which to base decisions of drug management of HIV infection in pregnancy. The determination of safe medications must take into consideration the need for certain drugs and the possibility of inadvertent fetal exposure because of unplanned pregnancies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of foscarnet on the entire period of rat pregnancy. Female pregnant rats were randomly assigned to four treatment groups (n = 10): one control (C) treated with the drug vehicle (bidestilled water) and three experimental groups (E1, E2 and E3) treated with 180, 360 or 720 mg/Kg of foscarnet, respectively. Rats were treated by gavage once daily. The treatment period extended from the first until the 20th day of pregnancy. Body...

Ultrastructural Characterization of the Pars Distalis of the Indian Female Sheath-Tailed Bat, Taphozous longimanus (Hardwicke) International Journal of Morphology
Nerkar,Archana A; Gadegone,Mohan M.
The present ultrastructural observations demonstrate the presence of six cell types in the pars distalis of non-pregnant and pregnant bats of Taphozous longimanus. In the pars distalis of T. longimanus, STH cells are round to oval with eccentrically placed nucleus, numerous secretory granules and well developed Golgi indicate a cell under vigorous synthetic activity while those filled with secretory granules with reduced Golgi complex suggest reserve or storage state of cells. LTH cell is characterized by the large secretory granules, dilated endoplasmic reticulum and numerous mitochondria in the cytoplasm which indicate that these cells are hypertrophied and synthetically very active during pregnancy. ACTH cells are found either singly or in groups and...

SNAKEBITE IN PREGNANCY: A PRELIMINARY STUDY J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
PARDAL,P. P. O.; MAZZEO,T.; PINHEIRO,A. C. L..
Worldwide occurrence of envenomation by snakebite in pregnancy is rare according to the medical literature. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the frequency of snakebite envenomation cases as well as their obstetrical consequences. Thus, we conducted this study based on the medical records of 157 patients, aged from 13 to 54 years old who had been attended at the "João de Barros Barreto" University Hospital from January 1989 to May 1994. These patients presented epidemiological and clinical diagnosis of snakebite envenomation. Of the 157 patients, 8 (5%) were pregnant, 6 of them (75%) were in the first trimester of pregnancy and 2 (25%) in the 2nd trimester. Most of the victims were usually over 18 years old (7 cases, 87.5%). Concerning the...

Mild reproductive effects of the Tityus bahiensis scorpion venom in rats J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Dorce,Ana Leticia C; Dorce,Valquiria AC; Nencioni,Ana Leonor A.
BackgroundScorpion envenoming is a public health problem in Brazil, whereTityus serrulatus and T. bahiensisare considered the most dangerous scorpions. They are well adapted to urbanized environments, and there is an increasing probability of human exposure to these venoms, including during pregnancy. Not much is known about the effects of prenatal exposure to the venom, and no information is available to aid in the rational treatment of victims stung during pregnancy. Thus, this study aimed to investigate whether venom from the scorpion T. bahiensis administered once to pregnant female rats at a dose that causes a moderate envenomation may lead to deleterious effects on the reproductive performance of the dams and on the development of their offspring....
