Microbiological and organoleptic impact of three different technical procedures in order to prepare wine for bottling Organic Eprints
Blateyron, Lucile; Elichiry, Gisèle.
In order to establish the extent to which each of the technical sequences regarding the preparation of wine for bottling (3 final filtration thresholds: 0.65µm, 2µm and 5µm) were in keeping with the cellar objectives and to measure the analytical, microbiological and organoleptic impact on the wine for each sequence, over a one-year period, we monitored a red wine prepared according to the 3 methodologies. A low initial microbiological level (absence of Brettanomyces, Pédiococcus and Lactobacillus), combined with a stable active SO2 content between 0.4 and 0.5 mg/l, enabled analytical and microbiological stability of all the wines compared. The triangular tests performed by a panel of trained oenologists did not reveal any significant differences linked to...

Assessment of the strategies of organic fruit production and fruit drying in Uganda Organic Eprints
Chongtham, Imam Raj; de Neergaard, Andreas; Pillot, Didier.
Organic agriculture in Uganda is developing at a fast pace and despite this trend Uganda is still unable to produce enough fresh and dry organic fruits mainly pineapple to meet the exporters demand. This current research investigated the strategies of farmers at production level by assessing the pros and cons of fruit growing, organic agriculture and fruit drying in order to understand the underlying causal factor for the low production of organic dry fruits in a major fruit producing district of Uganda. The study was carried out in two separate and distinctive areas; one which only produces and export fresh organic pineapple and the other which exports dried fruits (mainly pineapple and papaya). About 10 % of the farmers in the two study areas were...

Values Based Supply Chains as a Tool for Territorial Development Organic Eprints
Stotten, Rike; Schermer, Markus; Pugliese, Patrizia; Lamine, Claire; Bui, Sibylle.
Recently established organic regions aim to be model regions of sustainability. This paper focuses on the role and configurations of values based supply chains for the territorial development of organic regions. Three different case studies of organic regions in Italy, France and Austria are investi-gated. Principles of organic farming according to the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement and the concept of neo-endogenous development by Christopher Ray serve as frame-work for analyzes. Finally, we include values-based supply chains into the model of neo-endogenous development: first to link values on a territorial level and second as a tool to imple-ment them.

Økologisk skolemad – betingelser for de økologiske leverandører Organic Eprints
Nielsen, Thorkild; Hansen , Stine Rosenlund; Hansen, Mette Weinreich; Kristensen, Niels Heine.

Morel-Thareau, Bertille; Le Guen, Roger; Schieb-Bienfait, Nathalie; Lambert, Annie; Euzen, Rebecca.

D5.1 Report on the methodologies for data quality improvement along the whole supply chain Organic Eprints
Feldmann, Corinna; Hamm, Ulrich.
Depending on the availability of data, organic as well as total data for different products, a number of checks to validate the consistency of data can be carried out. Potential quality checks were described in chapter 2.2, which includes a manual for data quality checking procedures. In the results part of this report, these checks were applied to six products from Organic Data Network partners participating in the project’s case studies.

Marsh v Baxter, Kojonup to Canberra: Foresight, Hindsight and Insight Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Australia is a global leader in organic production and a minnow in global GMO production. Organic produce consistently sells at a premium, while genetically modified (GM) produce consistently sells at a discount. In the case of Marsh and Baxter, the facts were agreed but their interpretation was not and this proved fatal to the case. This was a dispute between two farmer neighbours at Kojonup, Western Australia. When the GMO moratorium was lifted in WA, Baxter promptly planted Monsanto GM canola along his border with his organic neighbour. Marsh had previously warned Baxter that the organic certification of the Marsh farm was at risk if it was contaminated by an incursion of GM canola. The foreseen incursion eventuated and the certifier (NASAA) withdrew...

Corporate Social Responsibility and Organic Farming –Experiences in Austria Organic Eprints
Gössinger, Katharina; Freyer, Bernhard.
Although the market for organic products has been growing in Austria for a few years, the rising competition of so called regional, natural or sustainable products should be taken seriously. One solution in times of “conventionalisation” of organic farming could be higher ethical standards in organic farming and more effective communication of ethical values, as it has already been practised by a great number of medium-sized and large enterprises under the name of “Corporate Social Responsibility” (CSR). CSR refers to all services that are beyond legal requirements, performed on a voluntary basis. This article discusses the topic CSR and similar approaches in the Austrian organic sector on the basis of 30 interviews with Austrian organic farmers and...

Organic chains in the United Kingdom and Germany: lessons for Dutch organic agribusiness Organic Eprints
Meeusen, Marieke JG.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. This paper presents lessons for Dutch organic agribusiness based on a study of the UK and Germany. The following lessons are drawn: public-private cooperation is desirable for the sake of further development; the supermarket chain is necessary in order to achieve a large market share; consumers and supermarket chains subject organic products to at least the same demands that they have for regular products; communication: [1] a task for the government and market parties, [2] striving for one mark of quality [3] health is the driving motivation, although not communicated as such; organic agriculture has more chains and more segments.

Diverse characteristics of UK organic direct marketing chains Organic Eprints
Geen, N; Firth, C; Maye, D; Ilbery, B.
In the past few years, organic direct sales in the UK have grown rapidly. Direct sales are assumed to have short or distinct marketing chains from farm gate to consumer. This paper begins by outlining some current problems with the widely accepted defi nition of organic direct sales and charts some of their diverse characteristics. It goes on to argue that the mix of organic direct and multi-farm direct sales is so diverse that a greater clarification of terms is necessary in order to progress consumer, policy and research understanding.

Schulze, Maureen; Risius, Antje.

Organic consumption: a form of hybrid communication Organic Eprints
Laursen, Klaus Brønd.
This paper discusses how the consumption of organic food can be understood as a form of hybrid communication. By describing the consumption of organic food as a form of hybridity the paper shows how different codes such as health, aesthetics and morality can be reproduced by re-entering the economic code. This process of hybridizations allows the communication to handle more complexity than had it only been coded economically. But on the other hand the hybridization also creates an increased amount of social complexity. The paper argues that in order to better understand how consumption functions systems theory provides an analytical perspective that is well attuned into the entanglement of the different logics.

Organic and conventional public food procurement for youth in Norway Organic Eprints
Løes, Anne-Kristin; Koesling, Matthias; Roos, Gun; Birkeland, Liv; Solemdal, Liv.
In Norway, public procurement of food to youth is not well developed in comparison to many other European and Scandinavian countries. School meals are only offered in very few primary schools, and the common school meal is a packed lunch (sandwiches) brought from home, consumed in the class room. Subscription schemes for milk were introduced around 1970, and for fruit around 1995. Organic milk and fruit is offered only in some regions. Since 2007, fruit is served without payment in all schools with a lower secondary level (class 8-10 or 1-10). This effort was introduced as a first step to develop a free school meal in all public schools, which is a goal of one of the political parties in the current government. As in many other European countries, free...

Promoting rural competitiveness – how can "organic" and "regional" accelerate development in poorer areas? Organic Eprints
Bernet, Thomas; Kazazi, Iris S.; Eisenring, Tobias; Van den Berge, Paul.
As consumers’ interest for quality food grows, new opportunities arise for both organic and regional products. This is especially appealing for rural areas with a strong agricultural tradition. Yet, to be successful, such initiatives require a sound methodological approach to analyse well the context and opportunities together with different stakeholders and develop a marketing strategy that overcomes both market- and supply-oriented constraints.
