IDENTIFICATION OF ECONOMIES OF SCOPE IN A STOCHASTIC PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT AgEcon
Curtis, Rita E.; Sarmiento, Camilo.
This paper extends the definition of economies of scope to multioutput firms that face an uncertain production environment. Identification of economies of scope in this environment, however, requires separability assumptions on the technology. These identification restrictions are demonstrated in the paper, and for each identification restriction the definition of economies of scope is generalized to the case of uncertain production and risk aversion.

Specification and estimation of heterogeneous risk preference AgEcon
Guan, Zhengfei; Wu, Feng.
In this paper we specify and estimate producers’ risk preference using farm data. We allow heterogeneous risk preference across individuals and propose a specification to model the heterogeneity. We base farmers’ decision making on a utility maximization framework and incorporate both market and production risk in farmers’ decision making. We do not assume any specific utility function or distribution of risk. The empirical application to farm level production data shows that risk preference does vary among individuals; demographic and institutional factors have significant effect on producers’ risk attitude.

Production Risk, Farmer Welfare, and Bt Corn in the Philippines AgEcon
Sanglestsawai, Santi; Rejesus, Roderick M.; Yorobe, Jose M., Jr..
This article examines the production risk effects and welfare implications of Bt corn adoption in the Philippines by specifically considering the impact of Bt on the mean, variance, and skewness of yields. Assessing the skewness effects of Bt provides further inferences about the downside risk protection of this technology in a developing country context. Stochastic production function estimation is utilized to achieve the study objective, including an approach that allows for examining the skewness effects of Bt within a damage abatement specification. Our results indicate that Bt corn do not have a statistically significant risk-reducing (i.e., variance-reducing) or downside risk-reducing (i.e., skewness-increasing) effect, the main benefit is through...

The Role of Risk in the Decision to Produce Post-Decoupling - A Stochastic Budgeting Example AgEcon
Thorne, Fiona S.; Hennessy, Thia C..
Under the Mac Sharry and Agenda 2000 reforms, direct payments comprised a significant portion of farmers' income in the EU. Farmers had to engage in production to receive these payments but the payments were relatively risk-free and therefore risk may not have played an important role in the production decision. This paper considers the effect of the decoupling of direct payments from production in the EU and in particular, on the role of production risk in the decision making process. In an environment where direct payments are completely decoupled from production, farmers may engage in an 'entitlement farming' system, that is retain their land only to activate the decoupled payment and not actually produce any tangible goods. This paper examines the...
