Elevage intensif du loup Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Coves, Denis; Gasset, Eric.
Different seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) intensiv rearing technics have been experimented in the pilot scale unit of our laboratory. During these upscalfing operation, the results obtained allow us to compare costs related to each fingemng production method. Closed system combined with early weaning with an efficient micropellet saves at least 69 % of direct production costs by comparison with an open system with Arternia during larval phase. However if closed systems are commonly used by private hatcheries, larval micropellets are always at experimental step.

L'élevage du Loup tropical (Lates calcarifer, Bloch) en Polynésie Française. Approche technico-économique ArchiMer
Pierson, R; Thouard, Emmanuel; Nedelec, Georges.
Due to lack of knowledge about the seabass (Lates calcarifer) market in Polynesia, various production levels were considered to develop a managing tool for decision, making relevant development strategy and adapted rearing technology. This work is an analysis of the economical parameters of known rearing techniques depending on various production levels. The comparative study of the techniques, phase by phase, regarding the production cost and the investments prompted us to select the semi-intensive larval rearing technology under the current economical conditions. However, the larval rearing extensive technique could be of highest interest for productions lower than 60 metric tons a year. Growing-out in floating net-cages appeared to be the only...

A comparison of economic performance in the fisheries sector: A short- and long-term perspective ArchiMer
Le Floc'H, P.; Daures, Fabienne; Brigaudeau, Cecile; Bihel, J..
Indicators of the economic performance of fishing vessels are frequently computed in various countries. In this paper, we use different types of information to assess capital value and the economic performance of fishing vessels. On the one hand, field surveys provide technical and financial information on the main components of fishing capital. On the other hand, book values are given in bookkeeping databases. Both sources of information on fishing capital are used for the same set of vessels, namely the commercial fishing fleet of the French region of Brittany. Based on these two sources, measures of economic performance can be produced for the short term using gross surplus; and for the long term including the cost of capital. The measures of...

MANAGING FOR SAFER FOOD: THE ECONOMICS OF SANITATION AND PROCESS CONTROLS IN MEAT AND POULTRY PLANTS AgEcon
Ollinger, Michael; Mueller, Valerie.
Sanitation and process control costs increased the costs of producing meat and poultry by about 0.5 percent in the period preceding the promulgation of the Pathogen Reduction/Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (PR/HACCP) rule of 1996. However, there was no benefit in trying to avoid these costs. Large slaughter plants and all further-processing plants with poor performance of sanitation and food safety process controls were more likely to exit their industries than other plants. Moreover, the fraction of costs required for sanitation and process control was about the same for large plants as for small plants, suggesting that larger plants were no better able than small plants to absorb sanitation and process control costs. Results also suggest that...

Economic Significance of Peanut Production and Income to Georgia Farms, Rural Communities AgEcon
Shurley, W. Donald.
Peanuts accounted for 34 percent of Georgia’s crop income and 13 percent of the State’s total farm income in 1992. The total economic impact of peanut production to the Georgia economy is $1.16 billion annually. Per acre, peanuts provide 2.8 times the debt serving capacity of cotton, 6.1 times that of soybeans and 16.4 times that of corn. The peanut price support and quota program adds economic stability to local economies. The value of peanut quota adds an estimated $48 million to Georgia farmland values, which provides collateral for agricultural lenders. A reduction in peanut prices would adversely reduce farm income and cash-flow, quota values, land values, and the real estate tax base of rural communities. Adverse changes may not alter the comparative...

AVALIAÇÃO DA PRODUÇÃO DO BIODIESEL DE SOJA E DOS PREÇOS AO PRODUTOR E AO CONSUMIDOR, NO BRASIL, EM 2008 AgEcon
Baccarin, Jose Giacomo; Gandra, Anamaria Guimaraes.
This work evaluated the effective and potential importance of biodiesel for soybean production in Brazil and its regions in 2008, as well as if the prices of biodiesel had been adjusted according to the interests of producers and consumers. Four situations were considered: the first one refers to the application of Law 11.097/05, which resulted in a production of 1.164,33 million liters of biodiesel (912,83million liters of soybean biodiesel), which corresponds to 2,6% of the national diesel consumption in 2008. Alternatively, an estimate was made of what would happen if the percentage of the mixture had been 4%, 5% or 8,3%. In 2008, it is estimated that 8,5 % of the soybean produced in Brazil was directed for biodiesel production, and this percentage...

A MAGYARORSZÁGI JUHTARTÁS JÖVEDELMEZŐSÉGE AgEcon
Fenyves, Veronika; Ertsey, Imre.
A támogatások igénybevételén túl a jövedel-mezőségi helyzetük javításának forrása a piaci alkalmazkodás, illetve a techno-lógia javítása. Ha a termékeik értékesítési arányát növelnék a karácsonyi sze-zonban a jelenlegi húsvéti értékesítéssel szemben, valamint a kos, illetve a jerke-bárányok értékesítésében a termelők figyelembe vennék azt, hogy jelentősen eltér a két ivar hízlalásának jövedelmezősége az értékesítési súly...

Economic Analysis of Pharmaceutical Technologies in Modern Beef Production AgEcon
Lawrence, John D.; Ibarburu, Maro A..
Cattle production is the largest single agricultural sector in the U.S. with cash receipts of $49.2 billion in 2005. Like the rest of agriculture cattle producers have adopted efficiency and quality improving technology to meet consumer demands for a safe, wholesome, and affordable food supply. This research uses meta analysis to combine over 170 research trials evaluating pharmaceutical technologies in the cow-calf, stocker, and feedlot segments of beef production. These results were used to estimate the farm level economic value of parasite control, growth promotant implants, sub-therapeutic antibiotics, ionophores, and beta agonists for the industry in 2005. The Food and Agriculture Policy Research Institute (FAPRI) model of U.S. agriculture was used to...

Efficiency analysis of a sheep farm AgEcon
Vincze, Judit; Tenk, Antal.
Our study shows an analysis of a sheep farm. The present farm was chosen for analysis due to the fact that it is run under special natural conditions and as for the sheep farming, it has quite a few non-typical features. These raise some economic issues, which have to be analysed, questions have to be answered that may result in useful conclusions. Since sheep farming does not seem to be able to overcome its difficulties on its own, the EU support system could give the initial step necessary for the success and would also help to sustain sheep farms. The amount of grant that is usual in the EU could provide for the sustainability of this sector, the relative safety of sales, the equal chances of the farms operating under different capabilities and if...

New agroclimatic approach for soybean sowing dates recommendation: A case study AGRIAMBI
Battisti,Rafael; Sentelhas,Paulo C..
The objective of this study was to introduce a new approach to recommend sowing dates for soybean crop in Brazil, considering the climatic conditions and crop yield. The first step was to define the periods when air temperature is smaller than 40 °C and greater than 1 °C in at least 80% of the years, and with at least 60% of relative crop evapotranspiration during the establishment phase in more than 50% of the years. The actual yield of crop was estimated by FAO Agroecological zone model for the suitable sowing dates. Based on that, when actual yield overcome the production cost in more than 80% of years and mean air temperature along the cycle is between 20 and 30 °C, the sowing date is classified as suitable, but if actual yield overcome the production...
