Organic fertilizers improve the growth, seed quality and yield of newly released soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) varieties in the tropics Organic Eprints
Onyenali, Tobechi; Olowe, Victor; Fabunmi, Thomas; Adeniyi, Soretire.
Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) yield in tropical Africa remains below 1t/ha partly because most growers rarely use beneficial organic soil amendments on degraded tropical soils. Therefore, filed trials were conducted during the late cropping seasons (July – Nov.) of 2015 and 2016 on the organic research plots of the Institute of Food Security, Environmental Resources and Agricultural Research, Nigeria (7o 23´ N, 3o 39´ E, altitude 139 m above sea level) the trials evaluated the agronomic response of five recently released soybean varieties (TGx 1448-2E, TGx 1440-1E, TGx 1740-2F, TGx 1987-62F and TGx 1835-10E) to the application of three commercial organic fertilizers (Aleshinloye Grade B, Organo-Farm and Gateway) and a control. The trials were laid out...

Cultivating a diverse wheat population suitable for low-input and organic farming Organic Eprints
Caldbeck, Janie.
The Population produces more stable yields than those of the parent varieties due to more efficient use of soil nutrients and water, and lower plant disease and pest levels. When compared to the parent varieties, it produces yields of higher quality; increased protein content, improved hardness, good baking quality, comparable nutrition levels, and it is suitable for animal feed. Practical recommendation • The Population is most suitable for growing in low input or organic systems (under high input conditions it maintains its stability, but could yield significantly lower than pure line varieties). • It is able to adapt to changing environmental and weather conditions and cope with variation in diseases and weeds. To further increase crop resilience,...

Desenvolvimento rural e práticas tradicionais de agricultores familiares: o caso do milho no vale do Capivari, Santa Catarina, Brasil. Organic Eprints
Rebollar, Paola Beatriz May; Miller, Paul Richard Momsen; Carmo, Victor Barbosa do.

Soybean silage Organic Eprints
Bortolussi, Stefano.
Soybean silage can replace part of the lucerne hay or part of the lucerne silage. Practical recommendations. Observations and practical tips • Best at the R6/R7 stage (full seed size for apical pods and beginning maturity for basal pods). • Late harvests (stage R7/R8) promote good silage fermentation and preservation of the product; however, there is a loss of dry matter. • If harvest occurs at stage R5/R6, use a swather to mow the soybean 24 to 48 hours prior to chopping (at around 35 % dry matter). • Choose varieties with low levels of anti-nutritional factors. • Increase seed rate to decrease stem diameter. • Consider using a microbial inoculum to promote proper fermentation.

Crop management of linseed Organic Eprints
Alföldi, Thomas.
What should you bear in mind to successfully cultivate linseed in terms of location, varieties, tillage, fertilisation, crop rotation, maintenance and harvesting? In particular, its low nutrient demand and the high market demand make linseed an interesting specialty crop for organic farms. Thomas Frei sums up his experience of having cultivated organic linseed for ten years. Hansueli Brasselsberg and Hans-Georg Kessler (Biofarm) and linseed producer Mischa Scherer provide further statements. The film was realised in Brütten, Canton of Zurich, at the Swiss Bioackerbautag. The Bioackerbautag is an annual event in Switzerland including field visits, variety trials, information on cultivation and machinery demonstrations.

Rolling of grains to prevent winter kill damage Organic Eprints
Dierauer, Hansueli; Siegrist, Franziska; Weidmann, Gilles.
The pressure of the roller stimulates not only the forma¬tion of roots and improves access to water, but stimulates also the tiller of the grain increasing its stability and thus reducing the risk of falling over. Practical recommendation • Rolling requires dry soil in order to prevent the soil from sticking to the roller and ripping out the plants (especially when using smooth rollers). • The corrugated roller must not damage the plants too much. Take special care when using sharp-edged rollers. • Every mechanical interference puts the plants under stress. For this reason, it is advised to go at a maximum rolling speed of 5 km/h. Notes • Even in densely sown or strongly fertilized spelt crops, the rolling is recommended. It weakens the main shoot...

No-till cultivation of maize in rolled forage peas Organic Eprints
Dierauer, Hansueli; Siegrist, Franziska; Weidmann, Gilles.
The non-tilled, constantly covered soil has improved water retention and also shows a better carrying capacity during harvest, and is less affected by weed infestation, compaction, nutrient-leaching, and erosion. Stockless farms especially benefit from the nitrogen input of the legume-green manure. • At the beginning of August, carry out 1 to 2 stubble-tillage operations after cereal or rape harvest. • Sow the wintering forage peas in October. • At the end of May, kink the peas' stems with a knife-cylinder roller, after which you drill in the maize with row cleaners. The green manure lying on the ground must be properly dried off for sowing. • The mineralisation performance, lowered due to the soil cover, can be compensated for with focused nitrogen...

Anbauverfahren mit Körnerleguminosen im Ökologischen Landbau [Production methods for legume grains in organic agriculture] Organic Eprints
Pommer, G.

THE EFFECT OF COMBINATIONS OF ORGANIC MATERIALS AND BIOFERTILISERS ON PRODUCTIVITY, GRAIN QUALITY, NUTRIENT UPTAKE AND ECONOMICS IN ORGANIC FARMING OF WHEAT Organic Eprints
Davari, Mohammadreza; Sharma, Shri Niwas; Mirzakhani, Mohammad.
Organic farming often has to deal with a scarcity of readily available nutrients, and this is in contrast to chemical farming which relies on soluble fertilisers. The present study was conducted to ascertain the effect of different combinations of organic manures, rice residues and biofertilisers in organic farming of wheat. The field experiments were carried out on the research farm of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi in 2006-07 and 2007-08. Treatments consisted of a control (no fertiliser) and six fertiliser treatments, namely, farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost (VC), FYM + rice residue (RR), VC + RR, FYM + RR + biofertilisers (B), and VC + RR + B. FYM and VC were applied on nitrogen basis (60 kg ha-1), whereas RR was applied at...

Desenvolvimento do feijoeiro sob o uso de biofertilizante e adubação mineral. Organic Eprints
Galbiatti, João A.; Silva, Flávia G. da; Franco, Claudenir F.; Caramelo, Anaira D..
