Catch crop in maize Organic Eprints
Dierauer, Hansueli; Siegrist, Franziska; Weidmann, Gilles.
Outcome: • Reduction of soil erosion, given a good development. • Suppression of seed-propagated weeds. • Better load-carrying capacity of the soil during harvest. • Fixation of nitrogen thanks to the legumes, and utilisation of nutrients in the soil after maize harvest. • Grazing possible immediately after maize harvest. Inconveniences: • Competition for water in the case of severe drought. • Cost of seeds. How to proceed: • Sow the maize at the beginning of May. • If possible, harrow a first time before appearance of the maize plants (blind harrowing). Second harrowing should take place at a plant height of 10 cm, when the maize plants are well rooted. Between a plant size of 10 to 20 cm a first hoeing should take place. • Apply liquid...

Effect of winter cover crops versus autumn tillage on Nitrogen uptake of the succeeding cereal crops and creeping thistle Circium arvense Organic Eprints
Thi Thuy, Hong Phan; Wacker, Tomke Susanne; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
The effect of cover crops on nitrogen uptake and competition between thistles and a barley crop was studied using 15N labelling of the autumn soil N pool. The effects was followed by soil and plant measurements of 15N enrichment in the following year, in plots where 15N had been added to plots grown with cover crops or plots subjected to autumn tillage

Practice Abstract: Intercropping grain peas with barley Organic Eprints
Klaiss, Matthias; Siegrist, Franziska; Weidmann, Gilles.
Barley prevents pea lodging, thus reducing the losses during threshing, and increases the quality of the harvested crop. The cereal crop also improves the soil cover, suppressing weeds. Growing two crops at the same time reduces the risk of yield loss. • The seed bed should be not too fine-grained after cultivation or reduced tillage (advantage: better channel flow from deeper soil layers during drought periods). A further possibility is mulch-till, whilst on heavy soils a plough with subsoiler might be needed. Possibly application of green manure or compost. • For seeders with only a single tank, mix the seeds well at the ratio of 80 % peas and 40 % barley (relating to the standard sowing quantities of both crops) before filling the seeder. Until...

Design and multicriteria evaluation of regionalized test cases in organic crops without animal production Organic Eprints
Garnier, J.F.; Fontaine, Laurence; Lubac, Stanislas; Bouviala, M..
What are the performances of different stockless organic crops systems? And more specifically, are there rotations more efficient than other for economic, technical and / or environmental criteria? This work aims to present the method of co-construction of simulated cases for an evaluation of economic, environmental and technical performances, at rotation and production system scale. Fifteen «test cases» have been defined in the partner regions of CASDAR projects ROTAB and ProtéAB and evaluated with a set of quantitative and non-aggregated indicators (tool Systerre ®). The results provided many references at different scales. In the current context, profitability was ensured for all cases studied, but the production environment had a major impact on the...

Cereal Populations - Coping With Unpredictable Weather And Climate Organic Eprints
Fradgley, Nick; Wolfe, Martin.
Diverse composite cross populations (CCPs) consisting of thousands of segregating lines are created by crossing a number of parent varietes. Populations demonstrate greater resilience in unfavorable conditions at sowing in Autumn 2012 due to poor weather and high levels of Fusarium infection in seed.

Root growth and nitrate uptake of three different catch crops in deep soil layers Organic Eprints
Kristensen, Hanne L.; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
Catch crops can reduce NO3 losses from leaching, but little is known about the importance of deep rooting for the efficiency of NO3 depletion. In a field experiment, we investigated the N uptake and root growth of three types of catch crops using minirhizotrons (glass tubes of 70-mm o.d.) reaching 2.4 m. Our purpose was to evaluate minirhizotron methodology and the importance of deep rooting in the ability of catch crops to take up NO3 from deep soil layers. Nitrogen uptake was studied over a 6-d period at the end of October by injection of 15NO3 at four depths in the ranges: 0.4 to 1, 0.5 to 1.4, and 1 to 2.5 m under Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), winter rye (Secale cereale L.), and fodder radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. oleiformis Pers.),...
