Economic viability of including palm kernel cake in diets for feedlot lactating cows Animal Sciences
Pimentel, Leidiane Reis; Silva, Fabiano Ferreira da; Silva, Robério Rodrigues; Schio, Alex Resende; Rodrigues, Eli Santana de Oliveira; Costa, Lucas Teixeira.
This study aimed to evaluate the inclusion of palm kernel cake in the diet for lactating crossbred cows in feedlot system, and its implications on economic viability. We used 12 crossbred Holstein x Zebu cows assigned to three 4 x 4 Latin Squares, in the following treatments: control (without inclusion of palm kernel cake in the diet); inclusion of 50, 100 or 150 g palm kernel cake (PKC) per kg in the total dry matter (TDM). Earnings per animal showed a reduction in values, this decrease in profitability is related to the increase in feed costs, specifically, and the costs with concentrate, which increased as the palm kernel cake was included in the treatments, 0, 50, 100 and 150 g kg-1 TDM. The effect observed for profitability affected the internal rate...

Food Cost Review, 1950-97 AgEcon
Elitzak, Howard.
Food prices, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), increased 2.6 percent in 1997. This increase was greater than the overall increase in the CPI (which rose 2.3 percent) for the third consecutive year. Higher charges for processing and distributing food, as measured by the farm-to-retail price spread, were primarily responsible for the 1997 increase. The prices farmers received for commodities, as measured by the farm value of USDA's market basket of foods, dropped 4.4 percent. The farm value share of the food dollar spent in grocery stores in 1997 was 23 percent, a decrease of 2 percent from 1996. The farm-to-retail price spread of USDA's market basket of foods rose 4.7 percent, partly reflecting higher prices of inputs, such as labor.

This report focuses on recent trends in the food supply chain. Chapters on food manufacturing, wholesaling, grocery retailing, and food service provide a detailed overview of structure, performance, information systems, new technology, and foreign direct investments. The report also contains a comprehensive set of appendix tables containing sales, concentration, trade, productivity, and other indicators. At the time of publication, most of the data sets used in this report included data through the year 2000.

Is There Surplus Labor in Rural India? AgEcon
Foster, Andrew D.; Rosenzweig, Mark R..
We show empirically using panel data at the plot and farm level and based on a model incorporating supervision costs, risk, credit-market imperfections and scale-economies associated with mechanization that small-scale farming is inefficient in India. Larger farms are more profitable per acre, more mechanized, less constrained in input use after bad shocks, and employ less per-acre labor than small farms. Based on our structural estimates of the effects of farm size on labor use and the distribution of Indian landholdings, we estimate that over 20% of the Indian agricultural labor force is surplus if minimum farm scale is 20 acres.

Factors Affecting Beef Cow-Herd Costs, Production, and Profits AgEcon
Ramsey, Ruslyn; Doye, Damona G.; Ward, Clement E.; McGrann, James M.; Falconer, Lawrence L.; Bevers, Stanley J..
Cow-herd standardized performance analysis (SPA) data for Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico were used to determine economic factors affecting cow-herd costs, production, and profitability. Total cost was defined as the financial cost associated with raising a calf through the weaning stage; production, as pounds weaned per exposed female; and profits, as a rate of return on assets. Variable affecting one of more performance measures included herd size; pounds of feed fed; real estate, machinery, and breeding-stock investments; calving percentage; death loss; and breeding-season length. Management variables were especially important for financial costs and profitability of the cow-herd operation.

Forecasting Wheat Output and Profits from Cropping Systems Using Simulation Models in Uasin Gishu, Kenya AgEcon
Nyangweso, P.M.; Odmori, Paul Okelo; Mapelu, M.Z.; Odhiambo, Mark O..
Simulation models have been used successfully to forecast productivity of cropping systems under various weather, management and policy scenarios. These models have helped farmers make efficient resource allocation decisions. However, in Kenya simulation models have not been used extensively and more specifically in modeling large scale cropping systems. The study aimed at forecasting productivity and profitability of wheat cropping systems in Uasin Gishu district, Kenya. Both primary and secondary data were used. Both time series and cross-sectional data for variables of interest were collected and complemented by a survey of 20 wheat farmers who were systematically selected to verify information obtained from secondary sources. Cropping Systems...

IMPACT OF ALTERNATIVE GRID PRICING STRUCTURES ON CATTLE MARKETING DECISIONS AgEcon
Greer, Heather C.; Trapp, James N..
Quality grade, yield grade, and other feedlot performance factors explain much of the variation in profit under grid pricing. Thus, feedlot owners can change profits by adjusting time on feed to influence these performance factors. This research uses growth models, logistic regression, and an optimization process to determine how the optimal number of days on feed changes under different grid pricing structures. It was found that large quality or small yield discounts increases the optimal number of days on feed and small quality or large yield discounts result in fewer days on feed. Losses associated with a grid having large quality discounts are minimized as cattle fed for more days are able to obtain Choice premiums despite the discounts for more Yield...

Employment as a factor increasing the population well-being in a social market economy AgEcon
Kuldurova, Batima.
The paper infers competiveness of a national economy in connection with the country’s capacity to provide sufficient and sustainable employment. The author argues the importance of reverse link that goes from sustainable employment and well-being in a country to competiveness of national economy. It is concluded that active social policy is important tool in providing impulses to competitiveness of economy,

The optimal suppression of a low-cost technology by a durable-good monopoly AgEcon
Karp, Larry S.; Perloff, Jeffrey M..
If a durable-good monopoly can use either of two technologies whose properties are known to consumers, the monopoly uses only the technology with the lowest average cost at low levels of production. If consumers only know about technologies in use, the monopoly may use an inferior technology initially to increase its profits, keeping the new, efficient technology secret and switching later. Thus, in either case, an inferior technology may be used; however, switching between technologies occurs only if consumers are not fully informed about both technologies.

SUSTENTABILIDAD FINANCIERA: EL CASO DE UNA EMPRESA GANADERA DE BOVINO DE DOBLE PROPÓSITO AgEcon
Ruiz Guevara, Carlos; Garcia Hernandez, Luis Arturo; Avila Bello, Carlos Hector; Brunett Perez, Luis.
This analysis examines financial structure, costs, profits, and economic equilibrium with productivity level and economic feasibility to assure continuity in beef cattle double purpose system. Productivity and accountant information from an enterprise Veracruz south state in a year were caught. Enterprise structure shows that work with own resources, and has a $111,709.19 profit and $21,492.49 loss; 67% incomes from dairy sale and 33% come from beef sale. Steady costs are 52%, and variable costs are 48%. Equilibrium point is fixed in 241,864.40 and 14,388.66 kilograms in dairy and beef production respectively. Kilogram production cost for milk was $2.66, and $12.94 for beef. Results show a need to use financial accountant to take choices for enterprise...
