Clinical forms and outcome of tuberculosis in HIV-infected patients in a tertiary hospital in São Paulo - Brazil 55
Klautau,Giselle Burlamaqui; Kuschnaroff,Tuba M..
Tuberculosis (TB)/HIV co-infection significantly changes the natural history of both diseases. Proper comprehension and clinical management of co-infected TB/HIV patients is still a challenge, particularly in places like Brazil, where both types of infection are prevalent. OBJECTIVES: Evaluate the frequency of the clinical forms of TB in HIV-infected patients; correlate the clinical forms of TB with the level of immunodeficiency; evaluate the response to therapy with different regimens for the treatment of TB; identify potential prognostic factors in TB/HIV patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The following data were collected at the beginning of the study: medical history, epidemiological background, physical examination, and laboratory evaluation (complete...

Determination of CYP2D6 *3, *4, and *10 frequency in women with breast cancer in São Luís, Brazil, and its association with prognostic factors and disease-free survival 56
Martins,D.M.F.; Vidal,F.C.B.; Souza,R.D.M.; Brusaca,S.A.; Brito,L.M.O..
The CYP2D6 enzyme is crucial for the metabolism of tamoxifen. The CYP2D6 gene is highly polymorphic, and individuals can be extensive, intermediate, or poor tamoxifen metabolizers. The aim of this study was to determine the frequencies of the CYP2D6 *3, *4, and *10 alleles in women with breast cancer who were treated with tamoxifen and analyze the association of enzyme activity with prognostic factors and disease-free survival. We observed a high frequency of CYP2D6 *10, with an allelic frequency of 0.14 (14.4%). The *3 allele was not present in the studied population, and *4 had an allelic frequency of 0.13 (13.8%). We conclude that patients with reduced CYP2D6 activity did not present worse tumor characteristics or decreased disease-free survival than...

Incidence, risk factors and prognostic factors of acute renal failure in patients admitted to an intensive care unit 56
Mataloun,S.E.; Machado,F.R.; Senna,A.P.R.; Guimarães,H.P.; Amaral,J.L.G..
The objective of the present study was to assess the incidence, risk factors and outcome of patients who develop acute renal failure (ARF) in intensive care units. In this prospective observational study, 221 patients with a 48-h minimum stay, 18-year-old minimum age and absence of overt acute or chronic renal failure were included. Exclusion criteria were organ donors and renal transplantation patients. ARF was defined as a creatinine level above 1.5 mg/dL. Statistics were performed using Pearsons' chi2 test, Student t-test, and Wilcoxon test. Multivariate analysis was run using all variables with P < 0.1 in the univariate analysis. ARF developed in 19.0% of the patients, with 76.19% resulting in death. Main risk factors (univariate analysis) were:...
