Sexual behavior of the navel OrangeWorm, Amyelois transitella (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) Neotropical Entomology
Parra-Pedrazzoli,Ana Lia; Leal,Walter S..
To get a better understanding of the mating behavior of the navel orangeworm, Amyelois transitella (Walker), we developed a robust laboratory colony derived from larvae collected in Bakersfield, California and fed on dried, roasted pistachio. In the lab at 25ºC, most of the mating activity was observed during the last hour of the scotophase and for the first 30 min of the photophase. Female calling was characterized by the abdomen being protruded between the wings with the distal segments perpendicular to the body and exposing a pheromone gland, as well as by continuous antennation. Males approached calling females from a short distance by displaying wing fanning and antennation. When a male antennated on a calling female's abdomen, she either accepted the...

Gonocorismo en la vieira patagonica Zygochlamys patagonica (King y Broderip, 1832) en el Banco Reclutas, Argentina OceanDocs
Campodónico, S.; Macchi, G.J.; Lasta, M.L..
Different cases of hermaphroditism in Zygochlamys patagonica were described through histological analysis. Samples were collected in Reclutas Bed. Argentine Sea, SW Atlantic. The hermaphroditism incidence was 0.14. . Thus, the protandric hermaphroditism hypothesis previously suggested by some autors was discarded.

Flowering and fruiting of Aulonemia aristulata: a gynomonoecious woody bamboo species from Atlantic Forest in Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Grombone-Guaratini,M.T.; Nascimento,A.A.; Santos-Gonçalves,A.P..
Aulonemia aristulata (Döll) McClure is a lignified bamboo species endemic to Brazil. This species occurs in southeastern forests and can reach high density at forest edges, dominating the understory of canopy-disturbed forest patches. The goal of this study was to describe the flowering period, floral biology, fruiting and seedling recruitment of A. aristulata in natural conditions in two areas located in a segment of the Atlantic Forest. Data on the morphology of the synflorescences and florets, timing and sequence of the anthesis events and floral visitors were recorded. Natural pollinators (open pollination or control) as well as spontaneous self-pollination were also checked. Pollen viability was estimated using the acetocarmine technique. Aulonemia...

Reproductive biology of the protandrous Ferdinandusa speciosa Pohl (Rubiaceae) in Southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
CASTRO,CIBELE CARDOSO DE; OLIVEIRA,PAULO EUGÊNIO ALVES MACEDO DE.
A study of the floral biology and the breeding system of Ferdinandusa speciosa Pohl (Rubiaceae) was carried out from March to September 1996 in Uberlândia, MG, central Brazil. This species is a shrub or small tree that occurs in swampy edges of gallery forests. The two studied populations flowered somewhat asynchronously from March to July. The tubular flowers are red, approximately 4.7 cm long and last for two days. They are protandrous and the pollen is available one day before the stigma becomes receptive. The beginning of anthesis and the opening of the stigmatic lips occur at dusk. The nectar is secreted during both the male and the female phases, with concentration of sugars greater in the male phase. The flowers are pollinated by two hummingbird...

Pollination biology and reproduction of Seemannia sylvatica (Kunth) Hanstein (Gesneriaceae) in the Serra da Bodoquena National Park, Mato Grosso do Sul Biota Neotropica
Camargo,Eduardo; Rodrigues,Licléia da Cruz; Araujo,Andréa Cardoso.
In Brazil, the family Gesneriaceae is represented by 23 genera and approximately 200 species. Seemannia sylvatica is an herb that occurs in dense populations in the riverbeds at Serra da Bodoquena. Goals of this study were to report the floral biology (on the first five days of anthesis), as well as to determine the breeding system and the pollinators of S. sylvatica. Data collection was conducted from June 2005 to July 2006 through monthly field trips, lasting for five days. Data on floral biology, breeding system and on the floral visitors were taken from individuals located along a track 2500 m long, in riparian forest of Salobrinha river. Flowers of S. sylvatica are tubular, red, with no perceptive odor and lasted more than five days (ca. 10 - 20 days...

Morphology and anatomy of the flower and anthesis of Metrodorea nigra St. Hill. (Rutaceae) BABT
Souza,Luiz A. de; Moscheta,Ismar S.; Mourão,Káthia S. M.; Rosa,Sonia M. da.
Studies on the morphology and anatomy of the flower and anthesis of Metrodorea nigra St. Hill. (Rutaceae) showed perfect flowers, which occurred in panicle. The peak of the flowering was August and September. The anthesis was diurnal and the species presented protandrous flowers. The green sepals and the red petals presented papillose epidermis with stomata and parenchymatic mesophyll. The tetrasporangiate anther presented a papillose epidermis too, endothecium cells with secondary parietal thickenings, two middle layers and binucleate tapetum. The only pistil presented an ovary wall with nectariferous tissue and a meristematic ventral epidermis, a solid style and an inconspicuous stigma. The ovules were anatropous, bitegmic and crassinucelate and...
