Evaluierung von Wintergerste (Hordeum vulgare) auf Anfälligkeit gegenüber Flugbrand (Ustilago nuda) und Streifenkrankheit (Pyrenophora graminea) Organic Eprints
Schmehe, Ben; Gallehr, Andrea; Buhmann, Kathrin; Spieß, Hartmut.

Approaches for field assessment of resistance to leaf pathogens in spring barley varieties Organic Eprints
Pinnschmidt, H.O.; Hovmøller, M.S.; Østergård, H..
The resistance of spring barley varieties to powdery mildew, leaf rust, leaf scald and net blotch was characterized by using results from inoculated small-plot nurseries and larger survey plots subject to natural infection. The experiments were conducted in different environments. Both trial types often yielded complementary results with respect to the ranking of varieties suggesting that a recommended variety characterization should include both naturally infected survey-type trials and nursery trials in which the most relevant pathogen isolates and/or isolate mixtures or populations are used for inoculation. Average and median values of the diseased leaf area of a variety were highly correlated with each other and with the genotype main effect determined...

Fifty-five spring barley varieties from the German official varieties list were tested for their susceptibility to loose smut (Ustilago nuda) and covered smut (Ustilago hordei) under a simulation of natural infection conditions. For loose smut infection cv. ‘Lawina’ with about 5 % infected plants was used as spreader. In the trial with covered smut 1kg of seeds were shaken with 1g of spores to contaminate the surface of barley seeds before sowing. Only ‘Steffi’ stayed absolutely free from loose smut during two infection cycles at two locations. With an average of 12.6 % plants with loose smut ‘Danuta’ was the most susceptible. Most susceptible to covered smut were ‘Tunika’ with 13.2 % and hulless ‘Taiga’ with 15 % infected plants. Thirteen varieties...

Jansen, Gisela; Kuhlmann, Josy.
Besides other legumes lupins belong to the local protein crops usuable as feeding stuff in ecologic farming. Therefore an important breeding aim is to provide lupins with high and stable protein content. A non-destructive analysis using near infrared transmittance spectroscopy was developed for determination of protein in single seeds of lupins. Calibration and validation equations were calculated on the basis of 300 single seeds of 3 blue lupins (‘Azuro’, ‘Bolivio’, ‘Boregine’) growing at 3 ecological locations. The estimation of protein content was possible in a range of 15-44% protein with a coefficient of determination (r²) of 0,907 and a standard error of prediction (SEP) of 1,86%. The equation was applied to evaluate the protein content of single...

Zusammenhänge zwischen Kalttestwert, Anbauverfahren und Ertragsbildung bei Vermehrungssaatgut von Winterroggen [Correlation between "coldtest" value, production method and yield in winter rye seeds for multiplication] Organic Eprints
Pommer, G; Fuchs, H; Voit, B.

Varieties of Field Vegetables and Potatoes for Organic Production and Marketing (OFO142) Organic Eprints
NIAB,.
Varities of six vegetable crops and potatoes were evaluated in organic situations grown in replicated field trials on UKROFS organic sites. In most cases the results differed from those which would have been obtained in conventional trials as there was no chemical protection against pests and diseases and lower levels of available nutrients. Organic seed was used were available and a comparison made of the performance of this against conventional undressed seed.

Hvedens stinkbrand - en udfordring for principperne for økologisk jordbrug Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders.
I afhandlingen gengives 6 eksperimentelle...

Seed borne diseases - a challenge for organic cereal production Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders; Kristensen, Lars.
Seed borne diseases are to be considered serious in organic agriculture, and direct seed treatment methods will some times be necessary. Hot water treatment, mustard extracts and acetic acid can provide efficient control methods. Discussions on the feasibility of the different methods in organic agriculture is needed.

Differences between spring wheat cultivars in susceptibility to Fusarium caused seedling blight Organic Eprints
Timmermans, Dr. B.G.H.; Osman, Ir. A.M..
Fusarium spp. present on spring wheat seeds can infect seedlings and cause reduced plant densities and higher wheat infestations. In the current project, variation between commercially available spring wheat cultivars in their tolerance to Fusarium seedling blight was investigated in a pot and a field trail. Additionally, initial growth rates of cultivars were measured to investigate possible relations with tolerance. Preliminary analysis shows presence of tolerance differences between the spring wheat cultivars in the pot and field experiment. This difference was relatively robust (experiment x cultivar interaction was not significant). Preliminary analysis also showed a relation between tolerance and initial growth rates of cultivars in the field...

An ancient compound rediscovered: perspectives of aphid control in organic hop growing by the use of quassia products Organic Eprints
Weihrauch, Florian; Eckert, Markus; Engelhard, Bernhard.
In the first three decades of the 20th century, quassia extract was widely used in hop growing as a chemical agent to control Phorodon humuli and other insect pests. In the first years of the 21st century this compound was rediscovered by German organic hop growers. In nine efficacy trials conducted in five field seasons, quassia products proved to be effective control agents for P. humuli in organically grown aroma cultivars. As the best method of application a systemic variant was developed by painting a suspension of quassia extract to the bines. This method proved not only to be very effective but was also best from an environmental point of view as sprayed quassia extracts had side effects on non-target organisms. As an optimal systemic application...

Control of seed borne diseases in production of organic cereals Organic Eprints
Nielsen, Bent; Borgen, Anders; Kristensen, Lars.
In production of organic seed it is important to have some control measures on seed borne diseases to avoid propagation and spread of serious diseases. Due to lack of acceptable treatment methods the only way for the moment is to discard seed lots with unacceptable infections. Experiments have been started to find new and alternative methods for controlling seed borne diseases. In spring barley the results show good effect with 5% acetic acid on leaf stripe (Pyrenophora graminea) but problems with unacceptable effects on seed germination have to be solved. The old method with hot water treatment can be used and the results indicate good results against leaf stripe using water at 55°C. The effect of hot water was enhanced by first soaking the seeds in water...

Sortenvergleich Zuckermais - Neue Öko-Zuckermais-Sorten in Sicht Organic Eprints
Regnat, Rudolf.

Cereal breeding strategies for organic and low-external-input crop production systems Organic Eprints
Acikgoz, Prof. Dr. Nazimi; Ilker, Dr. Emre.
Increasing trend in organic farming does not seem to have yet attracted the attention of many plant breeders. On the other side, in every cropping system, for every species, best performing cultivars are needed in each macro-ecology. Considering dif-ferent cropping systems, such as open or glasshouse production, main or second crop alternatives, plant breeders have to focus on the genotype-environment and genotype-input interactions. Organic farming is in need of tailor-made genotypes for almost every crop. In fact, in the near future the same amount of organic registered cultivars will be needed as the conventional cultivars. Conducting an immediate single or combined “seed-bed – pot – field test” might be a logical start to de-termine organic...

Untersuchung der Qualität von Saatgut sowie der Wurzel- und Sprossentwicklung von Getreidekeimlingen Organic Eprints
Diethart, Mag. Ivoneta; Weinhappel, Ing. Manfred; Hartl, Dr. Wilfried.
Primary roots and shoots of 13 day old cereal seedlings and quality of seed were investigated in the frame of the certification process of organic seed produced in Austria. The germination of seed and the development of seedlings were significantly affected by Microdochium nivale on wheat, triticale and rye and by Septoria nodorum on wheat. The number of primary roots was found to be significantly different in wheat varieties and genotypes but was not influenced by year and region. The number of primary roots was also positively correlated with the kernel weight of some wheat varieties.
